One of Houston's best 3/10/2006

I went to Vargo's half expecting to be disappointed because of different opinions that I read here. I was surprised to find that every part of the meal, the ambience, the service, and the experience were exceptional. This truly is a Houston gem. The view of Vargo's gardens is beautiful and the food is extremely well prepared. Not one part of the whole evening disapppointed. Vargo's is now one of my top 5 picks in town. Pros: Wonderful food, Great ambience, Great service Cons: pricey, but worth it more

Awesome Experience 2/4/2006

We ate at Vargo's last night and it was the best fine dining I've had in Houston. We went for a 25th anniversary and the service was terrific. The seafood was great. We had steak, and it was tend and cooked great. The whole experience was awesome. If you have a special occasion I reccommend calling ahead of time and getting a cake. It's only 6 dollars. Pros: Valet, Great service more

terrible food, terrible experience 12/3/2005

The only good thing about Vargo's was the view. The steaks were bland. The vegetables were undercooked. The salad was warm. The lobster bisque was awful-salty, way too much alcohol, and had only about a Tablespoon of actual lobster in the soup. The service was horrible - it took 3 hours for us to complete our meal. The temperature of the restaurant was uncomfortably warm and stuffy. I will never go back, and it was not worth the money. more

wonderful 5/11/2004

The food was delicious. The portions were ample but not overwhelming. Everyone had a smile for you. The piano player added great ambiance. Easy to hear the person next to you talking. The manager was very accomodating. Of course the view was lovely. I didn't feel rushed at all to give up my table. Quite the romantic spot. more

Vargo's for dinner 10/24/2003

I have been going to Vargos since I was a young girl. My daddy and I would go on special dates there. Now on special occasions I go with my husband. The food is great and the view is beautiful. Great on a cool night when you can walk and look at the peacocks and sit in the Gazebo. more

Okay, but not special 9/15/2003

Sunday Brunch-- In a city with so many fine restaurants, Vargo's is just ordinary. The food is average, the ambience okay, but looking out at someone's back yard (which is essentially the view) is just not that special. It ain't bad...but it is not just that great. more

Our daughter's wedding reception was held recently at Vargo's. Being the mother of the bride, I couldn't have asked for things to have gone better. The manager worked with us on every aspect of the day and he gave me peace of mind to know that everything we discussed would go as planned. The service was wonderful as well as the food. Since our reception was mid afternoon, the view of the grounds were a nice addition. Our guests were very impressed and thought everything was fabulous. When you hear compliments like we heard from our guests, it affirmed that we had chosen the best for our daughter's special day. I have no complaints and would choose Vargo's again, if I had it all to do over. I will definitely recommend it to others. Pros: Accomodating, Food, Comfortable Cons: nothing negative more

Idyllic 7/19/2003

As someone whose employment has taken them to many cities around the country, and has exposed me to countless restaurants, I deem Vargo's in my top five. For atmosphere, it is #1 for me. To look out on the lake or walk around the grounds and see the peacocks and ducks, etc., is so idyllic - as though you've been transported to another world. I was always saddened that I was there for business as the atmosphere - the Swiss Chalet-like lounge and the grounds seemed romantic. I was there mostly in the late seventies and eighties and pray it has not changed much - I loved it there - would love to have lived there (smile). Pros: Food, Atmosphere, Service Cons: Protect fauna more

Most Romantic in Town 5/30/2003

The setting, the garden, the tree, it's all about romance. Food is really good, but there is really good food all over Houston. The garden and lake makes Vargo's what it is. My first visit was 34 years ago the night of my high school prom. Been going back ever since. Pros: Lake, Garden, Setting Cons: reservations, noise level, parking more

Run, Don't go there! 5/11/2003

Vargo's - what a disappointment. This was by far the worst service I have had in any restaurant in Houston. We waited an hour before the appetizers were brought and then another 30 minutes for our salads (which we had to ask for and the order was wrong). The wait staff all looked confused and customers had to flag down their orders. The people sitting next to us finally cancelled their order out of frustration - if only we had been as smart! The entrees were mediocre at best. We did finally get up out of pure frustration and told the manager what we thougt. He did not offer an apology or try to explain, he did look somewhat digusted and said just go. So we did and we will not be back. Please, someone, buy it, redo it, and hire decent help! Pros: Scenery, Music Cons: Service, Food, Attitude more
