Best

Had some of the best pasta I've had in years. Better than anything I ever ate in Rome. I ate here a couple of days ago and the place seemed very clean, so not sure about the last ...

Worst

The food was ok. They had a guy outside that convinced my wife we should eat there. Everything was going ok until it was time to pay. We waited quite a while and finally I flag...

Best Tiramisu 11/9/2002

Go for the Tiramisu. It's moist, it's tender, and it's cheap for that big piece. Other food I didnt try, but I believe the desserts are great. The place needs more room, so be prepared to squeeze in! more

Woman grabbing at its best 11/5/2002

A typical tourist trap. Locals who have been around awhile do not frequent this place as employees are grabbing and hawking at women as they pass by on the street. The food is so-so. If the owner saw you having coffee at another place he was incredibly rude to you when you came in. Pros: Good location, Open late Cons: Rude owner, So-so service more

Italian Shame 10/31/2002

The food is awful, the service is annoying, it is way too loud. more

Loud w/Italian Style Fast Food! 10/27/2002

Pino Danielle music blaring in the background can make your conversations hard to decipher and can cause a headach at times, however the food is good Italian fast food. If you can deal with the young crowds order the Mozarella-prosciutto sandwich w/salad for only $7. If you have a choice between Pasta Pomodoro and here, definitely choose this place. Pastas are OK, better than most Italian restaurants in SF. Pros: Fun Cons: Too loud, Too crowded more

Great Food Great Fun 10/26/2002

I love this place - they have a wide variety to choose from and they are willing to customize your plate if you smile! The music, which can occasionally be too loud is fun and gets everyone dancing (especially the waiters) The desserts are fabulous and the hot chocolate is rich and sinful. My husband loves their capuccino. Pros: Great Food, Great Atmosphere, Great Service Cons: Crowded, Loud, Hard to find Parking more

Good night hang out 10/22/2002

It's a cool place to go late at night but very very hard to find seats. Most people stand outside with their coffee. It's hard to order and you can't really have a conversation. Good people watching place like most cafes in North Beach. more

Wonderful time and Andy Garcia to boot! 10/7/2002

Decided on this place after walking all over Little Italy. It just looked like the place everyone (except the tourists) was heading towards. We were not disappointed. Food was excellent and even Andy Garcia showed up while filming down the street. Don't miss this place. Pros: Inexpensive, Friendly, People watching spot more

If you want italian boys to hit on you.. 10/3/2002

this is the place to go... Fun atmosphere that makes any girl blush. Me and my friends used to go here all the time in High School - fun coffe & desert place - the best tiramisu in town - they're right about that. I think one time i got a massage there from one of the waitors! crazy but fun. As far as food (pasta) - tried it once and i don't think i'll do that again... more

wonderful atmosphere- disappointing food 10/1/2002

A new friend of mine took me to the Steps of Rome Trattoria last night. (October 1st) I was really excited as I had heard excellent reviews of this restaurant. The atmosphere was wonderful, our waiter was impeccable, but the food was ...mediocre. The carpaccio tasted like it had been thawed out too quickly it had a watery mushy texture and flavor. The grilled seafood-fish platter tasted vaguely of lighter fluid, the grilled fishes were fine, but nothing to savour. My friend's steak was on the tougher side. Our sides of spinach & potato were plain. I am often a fan of plain food, but boring is what comes to mind. All in all the food was sorely disappointing. Neither of us finished our plates. I doubt I will try the sister restaurant unless someone convinces me there is a difference. more

Steps of Rome Trattoria 9/14/2002

The less discovered Steps of Rome Trattoria has a a great fun intimate ambiance. It is less loud than its sister restaurant the Steps of Rome Cafe at night and was a perfect place to take my out of town siblings. Thank you for a wonderful experience. Ci Vediamo! Pros: great wine selection more

Happiest Place on Earth 9/13/2002

Steps of Rome has something more than great food, it has fantastic people who work there that are focused on you having great time with your friends. They get it, life is short, enjoy it! Bravo! Pros: upeat and personable, great music more

it's a must to visit 9/13/2002

You can't miss this wild and loud restaurant on columbus St. THe waiters are fun and out of control, the music is loud, the place is crowded. It's the only fun place open after 2 am that serves food, and it's become a landmark of SF. People from all over come to Steps of Rome. Their profiteroles are to die for and so are their other desserts. Their food is ok-not the best Italian I've had. You definitely become Italian the minute you walk in because the music is Italian and all the waiters are Italian. It's great fun! more

Just like Italy? 9/12/2002

Not quite, I just returned from Italy and ""Steps"" is nothing like the restaurants there. Don't get me wrong, I think they have the best Tiramisu in the city and the primi and meat dishes are good but the dancing, loud music and noise is for us westerners. If Steps were located in Italy you might see nothing but Americans there. Pros: Tiramisu, coffee, festive Cons: loud, seating nightmare more

Brisk Wine To-Die-ForBruscetta 9/9/2002

This is the place to be!! My friends and I have visited Steps of Rome several times and we love this place! The wine is divine and don't forget to order the yummy bruscetta for your appetizer!! The actual meals are average, but the ambiance, loud music, and dancing waiters make the visit well worth it! HIGHLY recommended place to go to for a night of fun! Pros: Fine wine, Loud music, Lively atmosphere Cons: terrible parking more

Come here if you like to be smooched!!! 9/6/2002

'Steps' is a great place to go with a group of people (especially for girls) and is the perfect dinner setting for birthdays or bachelorette parties. If you can't stand loud music this is not the place for you... but if you are feeling homesick for Europe come here and you can dance with cute Italian waiters while you wait for your table, watch the bartender play drums with spoons on plates and listen to the staff sing along to the music. Everything here is great. Don't forget the wine!!! Pros: all the food, wine, service Cons: possible wait, loud music more

Tourist trap, bad food, R-U-D-E staff 8/29/2002

Perfect if you are drunk or want to be mistreated by rude, insulting waiters who use sleazy lines on women. I wasn't expecting a classy place, but this was beyond belief. When, after sitting, we ordered dessert they told us very impolitely to ""go order that at the bar"". When my friend asked mineral water, the waiter kept asking ""do you want water with bubbles or wine with bubbles"" like she was stupid, and tried to hard sell us some wine. When I tried to pay by card, he whispered something incomprehesible to my ear like in a bad mob film (i could feel his breath) and to my friend's ear. He then WROTE ""CASH ONLY"" IN HUGE CHARACTERS on the tablecloth!! Several friends had similar experiences. Don't waste your time here. By the way, I'm from Italy: such a behavior is NOT tipically italian! Pros: location Cons: rude staff, loud, hasty, crowded, did I say rude more

Am I in Mexico? 8/22/2002

This place reminds me of all the over rated tourist restaurants in Mexico. All image..no substance. With all the fun and authentic italian restaurants in North Beach, why waste your time and money here? Pros: cheap Cons: loud, crowded, rushed more

Extremely Fun!!! 8/22/2002

The atmosphere here is the best. It's so much fun eating here....loud music, friendly waiters, and all the dancing you can do! If you want some place quiet & boring, this is not the place for you. If you want fun...then you must try Steps. Don't forget to order the filet mignon & the taramisu. They are to die for...yummie!! :) more

9 8/20/2002

Its an excellent place to dine with a large group of friends. A very noisy, loud and lively place for young crowd. Pros: lively, crowded Cons: no parking, crowded more
