Best

Had some of the best pasta I've had in years. Better than anything I ever ate in Rome. I ate here a couple of days ago and the place seemed very clean, so not sure about the last ...

Worst

The food was ok. They had a guy outside that convinced my wife we should eat there. Everything was going ok until it was time to pay. We waited quite a while and finally I flag...

The most fun spot in North beach! 7/12/2005

I went to Steps of Rome Caffe on Saturday night and had such a good time. When my friends wanted to go to North Beach I said no because I feel like all the places in North Beach are the same. Saloons or nasty bars on Broadway. Luckily we passed by the Caffe and had a great time. The staff was friendly and good-looking, the food was tasty, and the music was fun! I will be back next weekend. Pros: staff, food, dessert Cons: no credit cards more

Cons: poor, low quality, not italian more

I just got back from San Fran and I went to the Steps of Rome on a recommendation of a friend who used to live in the city. I wasn't that impressed. The pasta was cooked right but the sauce... the pesto was so bitter that my sister had to put tons of parmesan cheese on it to attempted to help. All in all that wasn't so bad until the bill came and they told us no credit card. No where is it written (the door, meun, waiter) that they don't accept credit cards. I am sure that there are better Italian restaurants to go to. Pros: good looking waiters Cons: poor food more

still a san francisco institution 6/27/2005

I had moved away from San Francisco adn had not been to my old favorite hangout, the Steps of Rome Caffe, in two years. Upon my return to the city, I decided to check it out and see if it was still as good and fun as it used to be. Fortunately, I found Steps of Rome unchanged. The same managers were there and it still had the flare and charm as years past. The pasta was al dente and awesome. More than the good food, I have always liked the place for its fun European atmospshere. I guess not all good things must come to an end! Pros: atmosphere, waiters, food Cons: parking more

best bachelorette party of my life 6/26/2005

Last Satuday I went with a big group of grilfriends for my best friends bachelorette party. We had the time of our lives. We had made reservations in advance but I was a little nervous because they wre for 7 pm on a Satuday night and I know it gets packed on the weekends. But they saved our table for us and the waiters were fantastic. They were so much fun we didn't stop laughing the whole night. The food was excellent and prompt. I would reccomend for any women planning parties to do it with Steps of Rome. I will be coming back. Pros: service, waiters, fun atmoshpere Cons: bill takes a while more

worst service I've ever had! 6/13/2005

The food was sub-par. The service was horrible! The background noice/music was loud so we couldn't communicate with our waitress. When we tried to order dessert, our waitress misunderstood us/we misunderstood her...whatever..the main point is she brought the dessert we DIDN'T want and then refused to exchange it with us when we requested a different one! COMPLETELY UNCALLED FOR. I understand miscommunications can happen but when your customer/client asks you for something-you get it for them, esp when it's something as easy as exchanging a dessert that's already pre-made and has been sitting in the refrigerator for over a week anyway. Never going there again and also spreading the word along. more

reall good pasta 6/1/2005

Being a North beach resident, I have tried all the Italian places in North Beach. Steps of Rome Trattoria was one of the last that I tried jsut because I assumed that it had the same atmoshpehere as the Steps of Rome Caffe. Altough the trattoria did have an upbeat atmoshpere, it was much more calm, and the pasta was buonissima. I had the gnocchi alla gorgonzola and my friend ordered the bacatini amatricina. Both were done perfectly al dente and the sauce was unbelievable. DOn't overlook this place! Pros: pasta, friendly atmoshpere Cons: very small more

So much fun! 5/31/2005

When I haerd that Rachael Ray from FoodNetwork came to film a new series at Steps of Rome in North Beach, I thought I had to see what it was all about. I had an awesome time. My boyfriend and I sat outside along Columbus Ave and watched all the ""interesting"" people stroll by. Our waiter was completely charming. The whole staff was so cute. It is rare in the city that Italian places actaully have Italian staff. It makes the experience more authentic for me. Two thumbs up on the food too! I will be back soon. Pros: food, staff, music Cons: too crowded more

love this place! 3/16/2005

Steps of Rome Caffe remains one of my favorite places to go out in the city. I hear rumors that it is a tourist trap, but every single time I've been I've enjoyed myslef and the food. I love the cioppino and pizzas, not to mention the cute Roman manager. He is so friendly and adorable. Pros: staff, food Cons: music too loud more

My favorite spot in North Beach! 3/12/2005

I went to Steps of Rome CAffe on Friday with my two gorlfriends and we had such a blast. I used to go there when I was younger and wasn't quite sure if I would still like it. I was pleasantly surprised by the good service and good food. Our waiter was adorable and very charming. I ate the crab ravioli and haven't stopped thinking about it since. So in short, the rumors about Steps of Rome just being a tourist trap are not true, at least in my experience.. I will gladly go back! Pros: cute waiters, fun ambience, good food Cons: music very loud more

No Italians Here! 3/6/2005

In sum, this place is a Tourist Trap! Too salty, too overcooked and too over priced! The service was horrible. The food was bad!. I ordered the gnocchi, it was overcooked, tasted more like mashed potatoes with tomato sauce. My husband ordered the crab ravioli and the crab tasted old and the sauce was all salt, no flavor. There are PLENTY of good places in North Beach, this is NOT one of them. Italians are not cooking your food that's for sure. It's a great spot on a beautiful day for a glass of wine or coffee. Just don't eat the food! Pros: great location Cons: Exspensive!, Bad Food!, Bad Service! more

you know what you come for 2/21/2005

I have been going to Step sof Rome Caffe sinc e I was 16 years old. I just went back the other day after a year living abroad, and was happy to see that not much had changed. I saw that people complain about the service, but the service is good. I mean people come to Steps of Rome to be flirted with adn listen to loud music, so if it takes one more minute for me to get my check becuase the waiter is flirting, so be it. I was also happy to see that the staff has remained Euro. My pasta/seafood dish wa excellent. I give a 9 overall. Pros: staff more

I must say I expected more. My husband and I went in to have dinner. We were promptly seated. The waiters werent sure who was going to wait on us, so we had two that switched off and they didnt seem very excited to be there. The food was average, nothing spectacular. The dessert on the other hand was to die for. I had the puff pastry filled with chocolate mousse and covered in fluffy white chocolate. Next time we will go there for dessert only. more

the real deal! 2/21/2005

I came to the trattoria without any great expectations. In fact, I thought it would be like many of the places in North Beach- for Americans who don't know what real Italian food tastes like. Since my family is Italian and I grew up spoiled on good Italian cooking, I'm not easy to fool. I ordered seafood risotto and it was literally to die for! I couldn't believe how authentic the food was. I also had a tuna carpaccio which was really tasty and tiramisu for dessert. My waiter was charming. I think the Trattoria is a great place to go for authentic Italian food. It may not be the hippest scene in town, but in the end ita all about the food right? I will surely reccomend the Trattoria to my friends. Pros: food, friendly staff Cons: decor more

Filet Mignon-a must! 2/19/2005

I ordered the Filet Mignon with gorgonzola and grilled radiccio. I wasnt going to order it b/c it wasnt the first thing to come to mind for an italian restaurant, but it was one of the best filets I have ever had. Highly recommend. more
