Best

Had some of the best pasta I've had in years. Better than anything I ever ate in Rome. I ate here a couple of days ago and the place seemed very clean, so not sure about the last ...

Worst

The food was ok. They had a guy outside that convinced my wife we should eat there. Everything was going ok until it was time to pay. We waited quite a while and finally I flag...

highly recommanded 6/10/2004

i've been living in north beach for about 10 years and i've never had the chance to go to the trattoria. few italian friends came to visit me last week from milano, so i decided to take them to try some italian food in the trattoria. we ordered asparagi with proscuitto for apertizer and it was excellent. then we ordered the grilled halibut fish and the risotto milanese. my friend was impressed by the authentic italian style of making the food. thank you guys for this delicious food. we'll be back. more

lovely and friendly 6/10/2004

the trattoria was recommanded from a friend of mine who lives in the city. i came with my wife from east bay to try the place and we got a table upstairs. the waiter was very professional in describing the specials, he made a few recommandations on the wine and the food and every thing was really good. they make us sing italian songs and that has been the funniest thing that has ever happened to me in a restaurant. we even danced with other people. i give to this particular restaurant 10+ thanks for the good time more

Always Excellent 6/8/2004

Steps of Rome Trattoria has been our favorite under old management and new. The atmosphere is warm and welcoming; the staff provides great service while being entertaining and singing Italian disco and generally having a good time. But the best part is the food. I have never had a bad meal or even a disappointing dish here. You can't miss with the daily specials board: the fish of the day is heavenly, the risotto always both subtle and deep. Some other favorites include the sweet, juicy, salty proscuitto e melon, the bursting with sunny tomatos bruschetta, and the gnocchi (little pillows of pleasure). Oh, and save room for the tiramasu. I must say, some of the other reviewers seem to have confused this place with the more casual Steps of Rome Cafe down the street. Pros: Lively ambience, Italian favorites, Great service more

Good Times 5/30/2004

I was recommended to go to this place by a friend and the experience turned out to be great. The host was very entertaining and even though it was extremely busy we still were seated fairly quickly! Once seated the waiter explained the specialities and soon our food was in front of us. The food is great, so is the wine, and the dessert! Definitely a place to go to for a fun night out in the city! Pros: Service, Food, Entertaining more

Have a good time!! 5/8/2004

My favorite place to hang out in north beach. The food is like I had in Rome (try the seafood spaghetti...outstanding). You can tell the waiters are not professional, but their italian way of having a conversation gives you the chance to forgive them. If you're looking for something quite and formal don't even step inside. Pros: friendly, good food, fun more

Terrible Service 10/17/2003

The food was ok. They had a guy outside that convinced my wife we should eat there. Everything was going ok until it was time to pay. We waited quite a while and finally I flagged down the waiter and tried to give him my credit card, but they only take cash. I was digging out my cash the waiter dissappeared. We waited 10 minutes and I went up to the cash register and tried to pay but the lady working it said I needed to wait and she would tell me when I could pay. 10 minutes of trying to flag the waiter later I went up to the bar and told the person who appeared to be in charge I had been waiting for 20 minutes to pay, he looked annoyed, did not apologize, and told the woman to take my money. Absolutely terrible service. Cons: Service, Service, Extremely loud more

really fun, if you're young 10/15/2003

this is a really fun place to go if you're up for a loud, bright, fun, night. definately dont go here if you are expecting to sit at a table and talk about anything of importance. the carpaccio is great, the salad fresca is not. the pasta dishes are good for the price, and the drinks are amazing. Its kind of like a mini-bar/club, and if you come past 8pm I believe they do card to get in the door. Overall I thought it was just a really fun place that I definately will go to again. Pros: lively, good drinks, good ambiance Cons: too crowded more

Excellent Food and Fun! 9/23/2003

My husband and I went to the Steps of Rome upon recommendation. The staff was quick to seat us and very friendly. The food and wine were terrific. The service was excellent, keeping our bread basket filled and our glasses full. The atmosphere was fun and lively. The staff was beautiful and spoke in Italian. The restaurant was a bit cramped and hot due to the warm weather that day but overall we had a fantastic dining experience. Pros: Great Food!, Well-priced, Attentive staff Cons: Crowded, Hot more

cheesy italian! 8/25/2003

for tourist ridden north beach, it's not that bad, really. Yes, somewhat on the overly zealous, cheesy Italian charm side, but in good fun. It makes one feel like they've been transplanted into a Roman cafe...is this so bad? As for the food...nothing too original. Some old favorites, and how can you screw these up? It's pretty good all in all, and for San Francisco prices? Very fair. Pros: service, inexpensive Cons: parking more
