Best

Had some of the best pasta I've had in years. Better than anything I ever ate in Rome. I ate here a couple of days ago and the place seemed very clean, so not sure about the last ...

Worst

The food was ok. They had a guy outside that convinced my wife we should eat there. Everything was going ok until it was time to pay. We waited quite a while and finally I flag...

cheesy italian! 8/25/2003

for tourist ridden north beach, it's not that bad, really. Yes, somewhat on the overly zealous, cheesy Italian charm side, but in good fun. It makes one feel like they've been transplanted into a Roman cafe...is this so bad? As for the food...nothing too original. Some old favorites, and how can you screw these up? It's pretty good all in all, and for San Francisco prices? Very fair. Pros: service, inexpensive Cons: parking more

given: no comparison to italy 8/5/2003

The food and overall service wasn't very good. But then again, it's a given that the place of origin of food styles are always better, but I guess there's no need for anyone to boast about experiencing the food and the country's origin. more

Bitter-Sweet 7/26/2003

The vibe is great- it mirrors italian charm and style(they'll even speak Italian to you- even if you dont). However, included is the 'Italian Charm'- watch out ladies(really). Guys, your completely ignored. Food is great! Bruschetta and Proscuitto-yes simple, but great here! Try the Souffle!!! Crowd is 20/30 somethings. Very Loud, Glass of Red in every hand. Pros: Charm, Energy, Smiles Cons: Charm, Noise, Crowd more

North Beach Wonder 7/21/2003

I was here on a Thursday night with my boyfriend. After 6 hours on airplane, we both wanted a good meal in a relaxed atmosphere with great service. Steps of Rome Trattoria was exactly it! The food was excellent. We had salad, guazzetto, fussili alle melanzane, and bucantini amatriciana. All the food was awesome. We did have a problem ordering a bottle of wine because they didn't receive their order in that day. It wasn't a problem but the manager insisted that we have a piece of tiramisu on the house. It was a great dessert and we were happy that we tried it. I would recommend this place to anyone visiting the city. It is also very inexpensive considering the area. Pros: inexpensive, great food, excellent service more

Horrible food and service... 7/8/2003

I came here with two of my girlfriends and this place was horrible. The food was too salty and the pasta was overcooked. The place was so packed and loud that we had to yell to hear each other talk. The waiters kept packing more people in and moving tables around, with people arleady sitting in them!! Our table moved from the center of the room to off in the corner facing a wall. I am never coming back here. Cons: No parking, Bad Service, Bad Food more

fun & vibrant 7/6/2003

Steps of Rome is a great place to catch a after midnight meal. It's pretty hectic at night but pretty calm during the day time hours. It's a great place to hang out with some friends. more

Depends what you're looking for 6/2/2003

LOUD LOUD LOUD. If you want a frenzied pace filled with fun folks, this isn't a bad idea. Great place to watch the world cup. Good drinks, boisterous staff. Terrible food. Just terrible. Very oily and prego-quality sauces. more

Food and fun 5/15/2003

Had a total blast. Very loud, very crazy, very good for the ego if you're a female! Great place for a girls night out. Pros: ambiance, service, inexpensive Cons: parking, loud more

Taste of Italy 4/8/2003

Everyone running the show here is direct from Italy. With their designer jeans, Vespa scooters outside, and slick Italian hairstyles, this place makes you think you were hanging out at some cafe outside of the U.S. The food is great. No matter how stuff I am, there's always room for a little something here. Trendy, yes, but there's a good reason this place became so popular. more

It's Not the Same 3/14/2003

Since the change of ownership, everything has gone downhill for Steps -- food isn't good at all, service is slow. more

Fun place for people watching... 3/12/2003

The food isn't bad. It's better in Italy but, the tiramisu is good. It's a fun place to hang out & people watch. The waiters are big flirts so, watch out! Don't feel special though since they flirt w/every woman that walks in the door. In other words, eat dinner somewhere in North Beach and then go to Steps of Rome for dessert & people watching. Pros: desserts, locaton, fun atmosphere Cons: parking, crowded more

TURN BACK WHILE YOU STILL CAN 2/20/2003

This is by far the ABSOLUTE WORST ""Italian"" restaurant in San Francisco. Believe me! Having lived here for 8 years Ive been to many North Beach restaurants. I really hit the jackpot this time. The combination of food and service was, at best insulting, and quite honestly abusive. As my out of town guests and I suffered through the meal we were entertained by an oversexed, adolescent wait staff who's idea of good service is to hit on every female who enters the building. Everything was bad; three of the entrees were inedible, and when I requested that they be removed from the bill the manager became confrontational and refused, arguing that I was trying to cheat him. On the way out of the restaurant he called one of my guests stupid and said we werent welcomed back. Not welcomed back? Thank God for small miracles. more

Steps of Rome - don't go 2/19/2003

It's embarrassing to think that Steps of Rome is what Italians think Americans want from a dining experience. And it can't be what Italians want from a dining experience - because I've been to Italy. In any case, don't go - unless you like waiting an hour for your ""reservation"", being stuffed into an over-crowded room, having bad pop music blasted at you at ear popping decimals while you shout your order to a waiter at the other end of the table just to have him bring you a plate of bland-tasting pasta. Pros: other restaurts near Cons: LOUD, crowded, bad food more

Cozy little place with Italian treats 2/18/2003

I heard mixed reviews about this place but I personally found it pretty delightful. I went with some friends last week and I ordered: Antipasti: Involtini di Melanzane (Eggplant rolled with mozerella cheese in tomato basil sauce) Primi piatti: Fettuccine con Pollo (the vodka, basil pink sauce rocks!!!!!) and finished off with tiramisu. Service was friendly and prompt. A charm in the city. Pros: Food, Friendly service Cons: Lack of parking more
