The food was ok. They had a guy outside that convinced my wife we should eat there. Everything was going ok until it was time to pay. We waited quite a while and finally I flag...

Awesome food, fabulous staff 8/17/2009

Had some of the best pasta I've had in years. Better than anything I ever ate in Rome. I ate here a couple of days ago and the place seemed very clean, so not sure about the last few reviews. The food is excellent, the staff is incredibly friendly, and the gorgonzola ravioli was out of this world. I would eat here again in a heartbeat! Pros: Excellent food more

Yikes!!! 3/25/2009

I have eaten here for ten plus years. Always found the food to be better than average. Over the past year or so, I have found that the food has changed, by that I mean the taste of the food. And now there is an insect issue to deal with. I hope that the calls to the health inspector will turn up some heat on the owners to get a clue. I think I will wait for a year or so and then maybe go back to see if they are back to the way it used to be. Otherwise, there are about 300 other places I would rather eat. Pros: fun place to eat, romantic Cons: UH...bring your own Raid more

Visited by three insects!!! 2/15/2009

What happened to this place! It's been a couple of years since I last dined at this restaurant which had left me nice memories with the fun atmosphere and home-cooked-tasting food. I went back there last week with my friend, and had horrifying experience. I should have followed the warning signs at the beginning. The restaurant wasn?t nearly as crowed as it used to, and the waiter?s Italian accent sounded so fake. Food was tasted ok, but far from the level you?d expect for the prices. The famous Tiramisu does not live up to the reputation, suggesting some kind of a cutting corner process. I used to go to Steps of Rome Cafe just for the Tiramisu, but it wasn?t the same. Has the ownership changed? Now the good part. INSECTS (CitySearch won't let me use my precise word)!!! My friend ordered tea after dinner. The waiter placed a porcelain container of tea bags on our table, and soon a brown insect came out between tea bags! We screamed and the waiter took that back to the kitchen. We were seated by a wall. A few minutes later, I saw another insect walking on the wall toward us. I didn?t want to freak my friend out, so I just kept quiet and quickly finished the payment and left the restaurant. My friend later told me that the third insect came up on her side of table, and she got rid of it without telling me. Either I or my friend will never go back to the restaurant. Disgusting!!! Cons: Hygiene more

Great place for late night italian foods 1/26/2009

I have been in steps of rome many times, mostly late at night after a fun night in north beach. I must say the food always taste great to matter how late is it. \r \r The staff seems to really enjoy their time while working and interacting with the clients. \r \r The only draw back, since its one of the few that is open late, it can get little crowded and the food might take longer than you expect. Pros: Opens late and great food Cons: little noisy more

Friendly Folk, Flavorless Food! 11/22/2008

Terrible Food. Friendly staff, fun atmosphere if you like loud music. When placing our order the waiter could not hear a word we said and came back with things we didn't even order. All the food looks good.....but had absolutely no flavor whatsoever. Waste of money, calorie intake and time.\r There is no moving space so everyone was bumping into each other. The birthday goers may enjoy the complimentary dance they get with the host.....but overall flavorless food.\r \r Pros: Friendly Service, Cons: Parking, Food more

Best place in SF! 5/1/2008

Steps of Rome is a WONDERFUL place to eat, have a beer, or dessert. The staff is beyond great! They are attentive to your every need and are always around to make sure you're having a good time! The chicken parmigiana is terrific! My daughter had pasta which she loved and her friend had pizza and said it was one of the best she's ever had! Yes, my daughter would love to marry the host in about 8 years but that's beside the point! HAHA!! Steps is truly a great place! The fruit filled sorbet is a refreshing dessert after a long day of shopping. The Company I work for will be traveling to SF this month and will definately stop by Steps of Rome!! Give it a try, you won't be disappointed! more

Too many good spots in N. Beach to waste your money at this one. 4/28/2008

The first thing we did when we entered this cafe was ask if they take American Express; and the host indicated that they do. After ordering, we watched the activity around us while waiting far too long for the food to arrive. \r \r The waiters behaved like juveniles, flirting and pawing the teenage girls while ignoring customers over the age of 20. After our entrees had not arrived for nearly 45 minutes we inquired with our estranged waiter - who nearly yelled at us 'It's coming!' Our food showed up a couple minutes after that. It tasted OK but was COLD...as if it had been sitting on a counter for quite some time. \r \r When we were ready to pay, the waiter told us they not only refuse American express but do not accept any credit cards at all. I emphasized they had told us they accept Amex the moment we arrived - but he insisted that's wrong and refused to take any credit cards from us. No such policy was posted, and I think this boy was just upset with us because we asked for our food after waiting only 45 mins. Don't waste your money, or time. This place is strictly for teeny boppers. Pros: location Cons: everything else more

Have fun while you eat 12/5/2007

Steps of Rome is a completely different cafe experience... this isn't the place to go if you want quiet dining\r .. You can expect an impromptu party here any time of day or night, which adds to the allure of the cafe... There is Italian music blasting through all of the speakers, and the waiters and patrons are usually singing and dancing along... i would recommend coming to Steps of Rome Cafe for their delicious desserts and espresso. \r Pros: Atmosphere more

Awful - Rachel Ray Lied 10/26/2007

We have lived in New York and know what real italian food should taste like, but even if we didn't, who doesn't know that vodka sauce is a creamy tomato sauce? The Gnocci with Pancetta and ""Vodka Sauce"" most resembled a warmed bottle of cheese wiz. The Fettuccini Carbonara tasted as if I was licking the inside of a salt shaker. The food was bad enough, but the sight of the waiters taking off their shirts and dancing provocatvely in between running out to the street with a menu to encourage people to come in was too much to take. Please, go to North Beach as it is a great neighborhood, but go anywhere but Steps of Rome Cafe! Pros: Atmosphere Cons: Food more

Where do I start? 9/2/2007

In all fairness the food that we had our night there was pretty good. The atmosphere, however, was horrible. Unless you want to end up next to a table full of high school girls singing Bob Markley at the top of their lungs, do NOT come here!! We actually asked the wait staff very politely to turn the music down just a little and they turned it up and then made sure eveyone knew we'd asked them to turn it down so that we felt like the party poopers. Embarassing (for them, not for us). Really -- I've never had such a horrible dining experience in my life. more

What Kids? 5/29/2007

it's a fun place if you're late 20s to early 30s - loud music, great atomsphere, euro feel, decent food, etc. Pros: ambience Cons: service more

Save your $, your ears, and your tastebuds 3/20/2007

Do NOT, I repeat do NOT eat here. Loud music, inattentive wait staff, and cold food are just the tip of the iceberg. The music is blaring and by the end of the night I felt like I had the onset of laryngitis! Our reservation was completely ignored, drinks were warm, food was bland and cold, and the servers could have cared less because they were far more busy doing more important things (lapdance anyone?) Anyone over the age of 20 will likely be miserable in this overrated, awful place. more
