What is the big deal about this overpriced, extremely loud, too tightly spaced tables, bad service and average sushi joint? Okay, so you want to see celebrities, go but you will ...

Inexcusable Service 1/22/2005

In January, I visited Nobu for the 4th time. We were seated promptly and ordered cocktails. We then ordered the $80.00 Omakase and wine. A few minutes later a wonderful dish of Touro was placed before us. After we had finished 3/4 of the Touro, the waiter came over removed the dish and our plates and said that we were mistakenly served the dish. I complained to the manager who said he would personally take care of the matter. We should have left then and just paid for the cocktails, but we stayed. The manager never came to our table and the restaurant didn't offer anything to compensate for the error (they could have taken the two cocktails off the check ). The Omakase dinner was nowhere near the quality on three previous occasions. Nobu is on the decline. I would not return. Pros: Celebrity Hangout Cons: , Indifferent Managemen more

TRUE Epicureans dine elsewhere!!! 1/10/2005

I remember the Goodole days Morimoto-san would make elaborate ""omakase"" creations, tickling imaginations with perfectly balanced flavors & gorgeous arrangements...Sadly, since he left it hasnt quite recovered. Its good but not grand and STILL living on hype from the past. Meanwhile, Japanese cuisine has come of age in the U.S. and Nobus turned into that uncle holding onto his glory days from the 70s. This is NYC! To be the best youve got to be on top of it; staying abreast, innovative, intense, cutting-edge, etc! Theyve become stagnant and its truly disappointing. Some dishes are good -like 3- but not much else. Recently, Ive noticed most of the clientele are tourists trying their luck to catch a glimpse of someone famous. Better luck next time! Cause too many onlookers killed the restaurants star-credentials. Like I said, its not really about the food anymore and rightly so. -TRUE EPICUREANS DINE ELSEWHERE- Pros: Drew Nieporent, Early N. Matsuhisa , Yellowtail jalapeno Cons: , obnoxious I-bankers, skewed/biased reviews more

most enjoyable night 12/27/2004

I joined my husband and his business patner with her spouse. We made the reservation a month prior for a Friday night 6:00pm sitting---No problem. When we arrived at Nobu we were seated promptly. We ordered the Omakase at $100 per person. it was incredable. The cold seaafood dishes had such wonderful aroma and taste. The traditional sushi, which is served right before desset was bland in comparison to all the other courses we had. Please treat yourself to teh tasting menu if you are willing to try new foods. The servings are small however after 7 courses you are stuffed. Our waiters were prompt and they made sure that we enjoyed ourselves. They did not rush us at all. I will return again Pros: service, food, decor Cons: , cramped more

Must go to the Real Nobu 11/27/2004

The two times I've been the food has not impressed me. For being Nobu without the glam, it was just ugh. The food wasn't anything to write home about. I have to go to the real Nobu to know the true greatness of this restarurant. I hope it doesn't fail like Nobu Next Door did. more

Don't go just for the sushi 11/1/2004

We had no reservation and got on the list for the sushi bar. We also went to Next Door Nobu and got our name on the list there and then went around the corner for a drink. Nobu called first. When we got there they told us that a TABLE actually was available or we could sit at the sushi bar. I prefer the sushi bar so we left the table for some other lucky couple. Our waiter was very helpful to a couple of Nobu Noobs and suggested that we not order only sushi as they really shine in their other dishes. This proved to be correct. The sushi is good, but not the best. We had a couple of ""cold specialties"" which were good. Over all, I like sushi. I won't go back to Nobu for sushi. I may go back for the ""specialties"" more

One of my favorites! 10/30/2004

Whenever I'm craving top quality sushi, a fun scene, and friendly service I head to Nobu Next Door. The no reservation policay makes it easy and no matter how long the wait is, it's worth it! The rockshrimp tempura and black cod are must-trys. The sushi is all perfection... the toro is heavenly. Service is always warm and friendly and the vibe inside is great. Any lover of great Japanese food must go at least once! Pros: Food, Service more

Simply amazing 10/26/2004

Without a reservation we put up a brave face and tried our luck and ended up with two seats at the sushi bar. We fully relied on our very capable waiter for choices of the menu and we were not disappointed. We have been spoiled by Sydney food and did not think we could find such good food in the US - we were wrong. Nobu rates as one of the best restaurant we've been to and is certainly in our top 3 restaurants. It is hard to describe why - you will have to go and try it out - very hard to wrong there Pros: Food, Service, Flavors/ingredients more

UNFORGETTABLE FOOD - Well worth it 10/13/2004

The food was incredible. The Yellowtail Sashimi with Jalapeno was unreal. Only thing negative relates to service. Took us 45 minutes to get our first plate, while other couples who sat after us were already on their 3rd. After some apologies, we were ready for entrees. Unfortunately they weren't what we ordered. So after more apologies and the manager coming over, we finally ate. Thankfully we didn't have to pay for their mistakes and got some stuff on the house. The thing is that when they tell you that you have a time limit they should be able to expedite your food with plenty of time for you to enjoy it without feeling like you have to beat the clock. Especially when you're paying that kind of money. Maybe it was just a bad night, i would definitely go again. Oh yeah, try the Black Cod with Miso - WOW. Pros: FOOD, FOOD, FOOD Cons: , Teenie tiny portions, Time limits more

Unbelievable 10/13/2004

Although Nobu requires a 2-3 month advanced reservations, it's worth the wait! My stomach is very sensitive to japanese food and I can only eat sushi but at nobu, I tasted everything we ordered and I loved it! My stomach had no complaint! The Broiled Black Cod with Miso was our favorite! We had to order two after we tried the first one. The Kobe beef was also quite delicious. If it's your first time going, be sure to ask your waiter/waitress what they recommend! Pros: Food was delicious, Dine with celebrities more

Slipping 10/9/2004

I've eaten at Nobu three times- got in all three times because the person I was with was either a regular or knew the manager. I would not want to try to get into this place on my own! The first two times were delicious but I definitely noticed a decline in the quality the last time. I love the space and the food is top-notch, but I'm not sure it's worth the hype anymore, especially when you see the prices. I reccomend Blue Ribbon Sushi, even though it has gone down in quality as well. Pros: Very hip vibe, Good Food more

Are they that good? 8/18/2004

I'm Japanese born in Japan, spending 20yrs living in the States. I love fine dining in NYC. I've been to almost every hottest restaurants. To my regret, Nobu was a big dissapointment. First of all. well, most important of all, the food was not that great. As a matter of fact, the food I ordered was below average in my standard. My two other Japanese friends who dined with me shared the same opinion. It was not worth it. We won't go back there again. There are many other good Japanese restaurants costing less money. more

Domo me!! 7/30/2004

Creativity & variety of the menu (including catering to vegetarians/mothers to be) allows my group to try many things. If you sit at the sushi bar you may have the pleasure of a massage (me & my companions have never been so relaxed or so 'nobu'!!) but you have to be a regular!! We think the waitresses just want a bigger tip. Hey, it doesn't fool me. I always leave 15% tip. Pros: Sushi Samba Cons: , Service more

First timer's review 7/22/2004

When I had to call two weeks in advance to get a table i was thinking man I'm breaking the bank on this meal... Boy was I wrong the meals are very normally priced... and the dishes Are AMAZING!!! We had the tasting menu (i dont like spicy dishs -- but my girlfriend loves them) they did one sampler for her and one for me... and it couldnt have gotten better. The miso Black cod has a taste just like seabass (actually if you put me in a blind taste test I wouldnt be able to tell the difference) The shrimp tempura was out of this world.... I couldnt ask for anything more... we had one bamboo of sake and then switched it up to hot sake... they have a fine selection with a great taste and bite. Pros: tasty menu, crowded more

Fab Food 7/4/2004

After visiting Nobu in London 2 years ago, I was pretty much hooked on the whole Nobu dining experience. The food is out of this world with its freshness, originality and fantastic taste-bud sensation! I was not disaapointed when I visited Nobu in NY in June 2004, and I am certainly going back again next year when I visit NY again. Pros: Food, Interior, Fantastic service Cons: , A little noisy more

an event to be savored 6/30/2004

I'd eaten here 2 years before and remembered it as an amazing experience. This weekend, returning again, it was a happy surprise that nothing had changed: with each dish (from tender kobe beef, the famed miso cod, and rock shrimp tempura with ponzu sauce... to the melt-in-your-mouth-fresh slices of sashimi and finally the indescribable array of desserts), our entire table could have sworn we had died and gone to heaven. Our waitress was friendly, unintimidating, and knew the menu like a proud parent knows her child. Words cannot describe! Nobu is more than fine dining: it's an event, and every bit in step with its reputation. Pros: amazing food, excellent service more

One of my favorite restaurants 5/26/2004

I had dinner at Nobu Next Door with my boyfriend for his birthday and had a wonderful time. We have been to Nobu many times but wanted to go to Next Door to try the exclusive raw bar there. The raw plate we had included live octopus, shrimp, sashimi, ceviche, and some of the freshest oysters and clams I've had in the city. It really exceeded our expectations. We had several of the retaurant's signature dishes after that, along with a delicious bottle of riesling. Everything was top shelf and full of flavor. The server was knowledgable and really helped to guide us throughout the meal. It's easy to see why the restaurant is so popular and every bit as good as regular Nobu. In fact, I'll go to Next Door next time so I can have some more of those oysters. Pros: raw bar, great food, delicious wine more

Not impressed 5/26/2004

I guess I expected more after hearing about the place forever. The waiter was very snobby and was disinterested in what we wanted. He was happier with the couple next to us who looked up to him like lost puppies and ordered everything he told them to and in his order. The food was mediocre, the sushi and tempura I order from my local delivery place is better. Nobu is like a once famous starlet who is swiftly fading. Pros: Decor Cons: , food, price more

Not up to standard 4/22/2004

We heard about Nobu for the longest time before we moved to NY. The overall experience was average. We had the $100 tasting menu. Compare with other tasting menus we had, it was not very creative or surprising. The dessert was the most disappointing with s'more. For a $100 tasting menu, we expected a better finish. For a Japanese restaurant, the black cod and lobster tempera were great. However, the ending sushi plate was not the best quality sushi. For the price we paid, we could have better Japanese food and sushi. The restaurant decor was a mix between Japanese causal restaurant style and trendy. Very loud for causal japanese dinning, not romantic enough for a date (but a date can pay for the meal). Pros: Good Service Cons: , average quality, bad dessert more

Truly the Best Sushi.. 3/24/2004

I've heard many mixed reviews about Nobu and I had to see for myself. Called i month in advance just to make sure I get a Saturday 9pm reservation, it took 10 min to get thru. Only had to wait 5 minutes for our table - downside was the waiting area is non-existent since your standing in the doorway. Waiter extremely friendly and had great suggestions which were to die for: yellow tail, rock shrimp and the kobe beef, which looked small, but actually filled us up. Then we ordered our own rolls. This place has exposed me to the best and the quality of everyhting was exceptional, how can I ever eat at regular sushi joints again. Can't wait to go back. Pros: quality of food, waitstaff, wine selection Cons: , no waiting area/bar, reservations more

anthony_nyc 3/23/2004

I went to this place recently with several friends. We tried a number of their dishes family style. The place was packed and the food was delicious. The atmosphere was lively, and the service was excellent. I would highly recommend the place and the food really wasn't that expensive...it's the drinks that run up the tab. Pros: food, service, atmosphere more
