Best

get yellowtail sashimi with jalapenos!!

Worst

What is the big deal about this overpriced, extremely loud, too tightly spaced tables, bad service and average sushi joint? Okay, so you want to see celebrities, go but you will ...

love the food 6/2/2003

It was perhaps the best meal I had ever had. The blackened codfish and sashimi tuna salad were to die for! We got a table right away on a Friday night without a reservation! The atmosphere would have been almost perfect if it werent for the fact that we were seat right naext to the noisy kitchen but I guess the speedy service comes with a price. The best part was though that it was my date's as well as my first time there so our server explained the menu for us and helped us decide and it semmed as though every thing was an excellent choice. Pros: helpful server, quick seating, food Cons: a bit crowded more

Lives Up To The Hype 5/22/2003

Simply put...my number one choice for special occasion dining. Don't come for the sushi...come for what I like to call the ""Japanese tapas."" The miso cod should, by default, be part of your meal...but the squid pasta and creamy spicy crab stand out more. Service is mixed...I've had outstanding service and mediocre service there. The decor is definitely dated, but you'll be too busy spotting celebs to notice. I'd say there's more than a 50% chance of seeing a celeb on any given night. Place the obligatory order of a little sushi at the end of the meal (for dessert)...just b/c you kind of have to. My favorite restaurant in the city...which is a bold statement. Pros: Best Food, Great Energy, Above Average Service Cons: Hard to get a table more

Best Culinary Experience Ever 5/11/2003

It was fabulous! We ordered seven courses and enjoyed each one separately. Get three cold, two hot. The tuna with greens and wasabi dressing is great. The lobster with asparagus and porcini mushrooms is seriously the best thing I have ever eaten. The char was amazing too. Make sure you get dessert...look for a banana roll with this chocolate dipping sauce. I am drooling right now! Quite expensive, but suck it up, you can't live/visit NYC and not eat here. Pros: Fab Food, Great service Cons: Hard to reserve, Expensive more

Dynamite 5/5/2003

We had great service, great food, Sashimi Salad, Toro Tartar, New Sashimi, Rock Shrimp, Sea Urchin Tempura, Miso Cod, & each got assorted sashimi & sushi... We were in heaven! We ended the dinner with divine desserts, fruit & sorbet, & mochi ice cream. This made our Friday night. Pros: Food-inventive, fresh, Service-awesome, Decor Cons: hard to get through more

Reputation over Reality 3/30/2003

No doubt. Nobu definitely serves some of the best stuff in the industry, but you can sense that Nobu has become another global moneymaking machine with lack of personality and style. Service is functional, often slow and incompetent. Lunch dishes are great and reasonably priced. Save the money for a groovier hangout at the Bond St. Lounge where food quality is similar and more creative/improvised. Pros: Quality of Food, Lunch Menus Cons: Lack of Style, No Personality more

the best east coast sushi 3/29/2003

i reside in california, and enjoy indulging in east-coast-only sushi - atlantic salmon, special mackerels among them. this was the best! they are open until midnight, so it's the perfect stop after landing and checking into your hotel. the chefs rotate from nobu, so the quality is said to be identical -- just casual and no res needed. my chef had been a sushi chef in la, so he understood :) Pros: superb quality, great chefs, wonderful staff Cons: a little pricey more

I see stars.... 3/10/2003

With all the hype about this place my boyfriend brought me here for dinner last night. For me it was my first time there and I didnt know what to expect. The wait was an hour but we were both very willing to wait. We ordered the black cod fish, raw oysters, monk fish liver pate and more but these are the few dishes that stand out in my mind. Each of these dishes are very small but very tasty! The big plus to my experiance here was that I was seated next to FRED DURST and CARSON DALY came over to say hi to him! anyhow my experiance was a great one... I would definatly go back here again! Pros: food Cons: crowded more

what's with the coat checker? 3/6/2003

I have been to Nobu 4 times and each time I felt as if the restaurant has deteriorated in all aspects. Food has always been over- priced, though I will still give credits to the creativity and presentation. The restaurant has also become very noisy... Service during dinner was alright, but one's perception to a restaurant usually starts from the very beginning: the entrance... I was appalled by the coat checker's attitude towards my guests, and that was how we started and ended our dinner which obviously help ruined the image of the notorious Nobu restaurant, a restaurant which was once my favourite fusion cuisine (not Japanese) in the city! Pros: creative dishes, presentation, beautiful setting Cons: too noisy, impolite coat checker, over rated more

Lunch Service 3/2/2003

Group service at lunchtime is spotty, which would be all right, but for Nobu's being in a class above. Pros: Excellent Food, Broad Menu, Well-priced Cons: Adequate Service Only more

Save your $$$ 2/24/2003

I've lived in Japan for 7 years and love good sushi on both sides of the pacific. What they served at NDN was cold and lumpy and had bad ""netta"" (balance between rice and fish). more

happening place - great for 1st date 2/22/2003

happening yes - cindy & randy dine unaccosted, cindy was gorgeously fab in very casual jean wear & red top. woody & entourage in back room also unasssuming. this is place to see people & great that no one disturbs them with autographs! but the food ... must try the chef's choice tasting menu - each offering was a treat!. pricey but if you do come you should expect to pay the $$$$. sushi was fresh/delish! appetizers & entres well done/well presented. & desserts can't avoid. The SUM IT: must try at least once, but like all NY top spots, reservations a must - can be weeks/months, but you can call for late cancellations. next door is also worth going for more unassuming atmosphere. Pros: chef's choice, great presentation, celebs Cons: long reservations more

nobu is great, but 66 is even better 2/19/2003

jean georges new chinese-french fusion restaurant ""66 leonard"" is just around the corner and it's even better than nobu - never thought i would say that about another restaurant, but it's true. and to think both of these world-beaters are in tribeca. more

Nobu huh!!! 2/18/2003

For a very exclusive place..I thought the service and atmosphere would be better!! If your paying top dollar not only should the food be great the service and ambience as well. First of all, the waitress makes you feel like a little kid at school. I thought they should be a little be more freindly not just because its time to pay & collect gratuity or because they want you out! more

Excellent Sushi 2/4/2003

Nobu is great. The Tuna with salad is the most amazing dish. They are written up with a recommendation for the miso-cod, I love cod but would pass on this. Stick with the sushi which is outragous. Pros: Food, Atmosphere Cons: Service more

Over Hyped..Over Rated. 2/1/2003

I was there for lunch to see what the Nobu hype is/was about. Coatcheck was was a mess. Its seems everything was piled atop a windowsill. And person at the check was not very smiley. Service was very prompt and proper with a smile. The braised cod was define and it melted like butter in your mouth. The sushi was boering and not special at ALL. Cheap Chinatown soy sauce bottles on the tables. Design of interior is contemporary but contrived. Bathrooms looked like the bathrooms in Macy's herald square.. Overall..good food..good smiley service..but nothing to support all that silly celeb hype. more

very good 1/30/2003

i have eaten at nobu over 100 times since it opened. at times i think they have slacked off and then i eat somewhere else and realize how good nobu is. really creative dishes presented perfectly. i prefer to eat at the sushi bar because i find the wait staff a little clumsy, and because the sushi chefs are really nice guys. oh, and don't make the mistake of ordering sushi only. the appetiver and other items are equally impressive. more

awesome 1/24/2003

the best meal we ever ate in ny or any where else in this great country Pros: food, service Cons: getting reservation more

Really Good, almost Great 1/22/2003

An institution of Great food has become a watercooler restaurant. This is too bad. The expertise and beauty of the presentation and quality have slowly eroded and given way to the assembly line of Omakase. The food is now Really good, but far from great. With Morimoto taking his Iron Chef clout and act down to Philly, the best ""Neo Japanese"" has left town. Hollywood and the rest of those who need to be seen can keep Nobu. Pros: Beautiful People, Sushi Cons: Price, Service, Crowded more

very nice 1/14/2003

really creative presentation by highly skilled chefs in a beautiful atmosphere. if the service were a little bit more professional this would be perfect. but as it is it is sstill my favorite dining experience in NYC. Pros: creative menu Cons: incosistent waitress, service more

Second Best in the city! 1/13/2003

While not in the same leauge as Blue Ribbon, or Sugiyama, Nobu is an awesome restaurant. We go there often enough, and live for the miso coated Sable. Yuuum! Scrumptious! Even the deserts here are to die for! Delicious! Hmmmmn! Cons: Not enough variety, weak neighborhood, closes early more
