get yellowtail sashimi with jalapenos!!

Worst

What is the big deal about this overpriced, extremely loud, too tightly spaced tables, bad service and average sushi joint? Okay, so you want to see celebrities, go but you will ...

Very Very Disappointing !! 8/30/2005

I'm so angry that I signed up citysearch just to write this review! The food is way overpriced!! Whoever says the food here is great obviously never tasted great japanese food before. The only reason they ""seem"" to taste so good is because the food is well decorated with its super small portion. Their poor service is second to none. They made us wait even though we made a reservation, the place is noisy, waiters are cracking jokes with each other, the set menu takes 2hrs and a half to finish for a measly 5 dish course. Left in disgust, not even hearing a goodbye from the waiter. A good day in New York was ruined because of this over-priced, over-praised restraurant that only is concerned in ""looking to impress"". Strongly do not recommend this restaurant whoever is looking for an upscale restaurant . Will never come back again. Cons: bad service, overprices, too noisy and busy more

Viva la Bam!! 8/28/2005

We went to Nobu for my sister in law's birthday and, boy did we get our money's worth!! We splurged and spent more money than we should but it was worth it. Partly because of our server, Bam. Yes...Bam. This guy is so full of personality and it's obvious that he takes pride in his job, which is rare in places like this. I highly suggest that if you go, you ask for Bam. The food was wonderful. It was our first time there and Bam suggested the tasters menu. FANTASTIC! The place itself is a little cramped, but the food, the staff and the service were impeccable. We will defintely be going back. Pros: Service, Food, Atmosphere Cons: Reservations more

All Hype No Substance 8/9/2005

We stopped by NND on a Tuesday night for dinner on gf's birthday and felt completely fleeced (in the way you feel after buying a $12 hotdog). First off, they have packed so many tables into the space that you are sitting elbow to elbow with complete strangers. The service was barely sufficient but not attentive. As for the much vaunted food, we had the raw bar, which was fresh and good, but for $35, could've contained more pieces. Cod liver pate with caviar was poorly done and tasteless. Halibut cheeks with asparagus, mushrooms and wasabi sauce was okay, if extremely salty. Finally, the black cod with miso was very good. If this place was the neighborhood Japanese at $30 a head I would not go back. But for $70 a head, I have to question whether it's merely another NY tourist trap. Pros: food Cons: cramped, spotty service, bad value more

Incredible food at incredible prices, worth a try 8/9/2005

We were given a table immediately, on a tuesday night of august at 10pm. We chose the tasting menu (omakase) at 120. The rations were small but numerous. The first raw fishes were common, except for a medium-raw whitefish. The black cod with its foie gras was incredible, and the Kobe beef excellent. The sushi were great. The dessert was very good : chocolate cake with ice cream, and a fruit granite with... GOLD LEAF. It has no taste in your mouth but it makes the meal very decadent ! And as my boyfriend said : the meal is not as expensive as gold, it is gold ! The service was nice and quick (plates were even taken away much too fast). The waiter explained all the ingredients. I definitely recommand that restaurant, but not for a romantic dinner as you can hear everything the other guests talk about . Pros: blackcod, sushi Cons: ugly decoration, dark more

order sushi here and you miss the boat... 7/31/2005

anyone who goes to nobu and eats sushi probably goes to friday's and orders steak. go for the nobu specialties--rock shrimp tempura (both ponzu and creamy spicy sauce), yellowtail sashimi with jalapeno, tiradito, sashimi salad, and miso rock cod (in lettuce wraps). Pros: incredible food, impeccable service, still a winner Cons: hard to get in more

great except the untidy ladies room 7/27/2005

had a great experience at Nobu with just a couple of exceptions. The food was as amazing as everyone expects, and the table captain was remarkably attentive, even standing next to the table to chat with me while my date visited the men's room. The host, on the other hand, made sure to tell us exactly when we had to finish our dinner because they needed the table. I'm sorry? We're paying $300 for a meal and you are going to hustle us out? I don't think so. And the bathroom was untidy, with paper towel litter all over the floor. I believe if you are paying for a high-end dining experience, the *whole* experience should be high-quality, from the greeting you get when you walk in the door to the neatness of the restrooms. It's the attention to details, folks. more

why the hype 7/23/2005

everything except dessert horrible. We were two couples. not allowed to have different tasting menus, all at the table had to have the same.I asked why and the impolite waiter said that is wht the chef wants. spending $120 should be what the customer wants. The oysters were warm as was the sushi that was served over dry rice. The plates came out like an assembly line. When we asked the waiter to slow down they came faster. When I told him the sushi was warm he removed my plate and never gave me anything else. The palaetswere never described to us,we asked the bus boy who did speak english, our waiter could not be found. With sake and 6 glasses of wine the check was a shocking $789 without tip. my tip to you is stay away Cons: service, food, atmosphere more

Busy Busy Busy Signal 6/21/2005

What is up with this place? They say you need a reservation, but when I call in advance they tell me I have to call back in a few days which is exactly one month from the date I want. Then when I call back on that date, all I get is a busy signal. Are these people kidding me??? Do they just leave the phone off the hook all day to drive people crazy? more

Nobu on Hudson is STILL the BEST in the BIG APPLE 6/11/2005

Don't be fooled by the naysayers. Trust me Nobu on the corner of Hudson and Franklin is still the best restaurant I've eaten at in NYC. Tonight, my wife and I decided to opt out of the omakase and tried to see if the negative could be true. We ordered off the menu... Yellowtail with Jalapeno, Salmon in spicy sauce, Komamoto oysters, Black Cod, Softshell crab roll, Lobster and Shrimp salad, Yellowtail collar, toro and uni. We even had the dessert, fried banana with chocolate dipping sauce. The food was great, service was awesome and the experience fantastic. We walked in by getting there by 6 PM... had a great meal worth every penny. Pros: Food, Service, Food Cons: Nothing more

Great Food & Very Accommodating! 6/10/2005

My group of 4 at the last minute turned to 5 and we were running late. Knowing that it's always hard to get a reservation I immediately called to let the staff know of my situation. They were very friendly and accommodating. As soon as we arrived, we were seated, greeted with exceptional customer service and ate the most divine dishes. Nobu has a great system. All restaurants should follow their lead. Pros: Delicious Food, Great Service, Specialty Drinks more

NOBU IS GOING DOWNHILL 5/31/2005

I was so disappointed by a recent visit to Nobu. After spending $250 on dinner for 2, we were seated at the sushi bar when there we 8 tables open. They were obviously trying to make the place seem like it was booked for the night, when it wasn't and they had a lot of no shows. It's obviously because of the service since when we complained about a foul smell of dirty dishrag at the sushi bar, the manager barely flinched. He was rude and treated us as if we should feel lucky to be eating there. Well, if they keep treating people that way, they'll be lucky if they can get the people to spend the money. When you spend top dollar, you should get top service. They need a makeover. Everything from the tattered menus to the pretentious manger, Nobu isn't what it used to be. Cons: Awful Service, Pretentious, Rude more

Impressed! 5/27/2005

My wife and I were recently in New York and we thoroughly enjoyed Nobu in Tribeca. We had heard so much about it and the food, ambience and service exceeded our expectations. We will definitely go back when we return to the city! Pros: food, ambience, service Cons: expensive more

The Best Sushi Ever! 5/22/2005

I was lucky enough to be turned on to Nobu when I moved to Soho, I now dine there several times a week. Better than the sushi in Japan, and I would know. If you have the opportunity and the financial resources, this is the place. It is not for the timid. Pros: Sushi, Ambiance, Style more

B-R-I-L-L-I-A-N-T! 5/16/2005

Nobu is brilliant! BUT you must expect to pay extraordinary amounts of money for good food! AND you must order as many dishes as possible! I visited Nobu with a couple of coworkers (luckily we were able to make last minute reservations!). We practically had EVERYTHING on the menu (including the specials). Yes, the portions are small and expensive. But the service, quality and taste far exceeded our expectations. The cod was heavenly - and literally melted on my palette! You have to expect to spend at least $100-$200 per person at Nobu. Spending less is unjustified! Go to Nobu - but don't do it on an empty pocket. Then - and only then - will you have truly tasted how brilliant Morimoto is! Pros: Delicious Food, Fantastic Service, People Watching Cons: Expensive, Need Reservations more

Fun and Delicious 3/2/2005

Nobu definatly lives up to expectations! I went there with my husband for his birthday last weekend and had a absolutly fabulous time. I highly recommend to all Pros: Fun, Delicious, beautiful Cons: -, -, - more

Amazing fish 2/20/2005

Next Door Nobu is a sure bet for any late night or if you can't get a reservation at regular Nobu. The food is just as good, and the atmosphere is even more chic if you ask me. I always spot the neighborhood celebs here who prefer to avoid the scene at Nobu and just settle down for the amazing seafood. Plus the raw bar platters are super fresh and delicious - you can't get those at Nobu because Shin, the talented sushi chef, works only at Next Door. Pros: fresh & delicious, fast service, chic scene more

OVERRATED!! 2/12/2005

I walked into a Japanese Restaurant expecting the best service and food. Unfortunately Nobu next door was overated. The restaurant was too crowded, the waiter didn't seem to have the patience to listen to what we were ordering...food was not authetic and expensive for the portion. I did not enjoy my dinning experience at Nobu next door and for sure I would never want to check out the real NOBU. more

We left hungry! 2/4/2005

I went to Nobu for a special occasion. The servings were laughably small. I spent about $150 on dinner and left hungry. There are plenty of better sushi restaurants in the city! The decor was nice and the service was decent. more

Always TRUST a WOMAN's Intuition! 1/30/2005

My lovely wife intuitively felt belittled after she told our waiter that she didn't eat fish. What's more, we could hear the waiters chatting amongst themselves about how we shouldn't even be there because of this! I couldnt believe the audacity they displayed. I suppose they dont need modest folks like us since they get plenty of business from NYs ultra-trendy yuppies. As for us, we will NEVER go to Nobu again. I thought it was supposed to be the best but was severely disappointed. My job sends me all over the world which has allowed me to eat at some of the most amazing restaurants in the world. I was hoping this one was one of those places since weve read/heard so much about it. But NEVER AGAIN, especially since my wife, who is the kindest person I know, was treated/viewed with such contempt. ALWAYS TRUST A WOMANS INTUITION! Pros: lots of publicity, long waitlist, plenty of hype Cons: fake-friendliness, get em in & out pace, our japanese waitress more

Lives up to the hype 1/25/2005

Despite some negative reviews, I gotta say that Nobu lives up to hype as an ultra-trendy restaurant with some of the best Japanese inspired food in America. Pretty pricy and the service is inconsistent but it's still a great time out. Pros: food, atmosphere Cons: , service more
