What is the big deal about this overpriced, extremely loud, too tightly spaced tables, bad service and average sushi joint? Okay, so you want to see celebrities, go but you will ...

At first ok, then terrible MADE PARTY SICK 7/17/2007

I went here expecting great things, as that is Nobu's reputation. When I got there everything was nice, it was a nice place, the food was good, but not amazing. There were a couple of notable dish's (shrimp tempura) and the black cod was also good. The service was also ok, but I really expected more from the place. Well, I did get more, but that was me getting sick. I always give a place the benefit of the doubt if i get sick from their food because there is no way to prove it. This was not the case this time, because my friend who I went with had not shared anything else but both became sick two hours later, but recovered fairly quickly. I do not reccomend, and its a shame because i had heard such good things. more

food is great but the sushi is good 7/2/2007

took my girlfriend there for her birthday. the place looks amazing so that's always a plus. our server (Alex) took fantastic care of us to the point where i spoke to the mgr about what a great job he did (a different DeNiro restaurant we went to previously gave us lousy service) Alex had excellent knowledge of the menu and guided us through exactly what to order. the portions were good of everything that we ordered. i truly felt the road to the sushi (which was just before dessert) was way better than the sushi itself (my gf and i eat sushi a lot so it was good but not great) if i can think of a con for this place it would have to be.............PRICE....it was expensive but worth it. go to nobu if you want a good time for a special occasion, but if you want to go for sushi, check out some of the restaurants in the village for better (and cheaper) stuff Pros: service, ambience, japanese food Cons: price, sushi, price again more

Just okay. 6/12/2007

I dont get it. Everyone raves and raves about this place. I only found it average. The service was excellent, the dishes were pleasing, but I really didnt find my black cod dish, a big deal. The food just okay, the presentaiotn of all our dishes was beautiful....but i wouldnt go out of my way to eat here again. Have had better experiences at other five star places. When I want to spend this kind of money...I expect something spectacular . This really was just okay, i expected alot more...much more actually. The place itself is gorgeous, but will stick to cocktails and appetizers perhaps should i venture here again. Pros: beatiful atmosphere, presentation of dishes, excellent service Cons: food wasnt very tasty. food wasnt that great. disappointed. more

Amazing! 6/6/2007

After hearing all the hype about Nobu, I had to check it out. I went there with my boyfriend for my birthday and absolutely adored it! The food was perfectly portioned and taste was right on point. My server's recommendations were great and a big help considering the menu is a little hard to understand. Prompt service and friendly vibe. I will most certainly return. Pros: great menu, prompt service Cons: can get priceyy more

still great after all these years 5/15/2007

I've dined here numerous times and although the experience isn't what it was years gone by, this is still a must for foodies. Yes, the service and the scene are not the same but the food as always stands on its own. I recommend the Omakase for anyone going for the first time. Also, reservations aside, I was able to snag a table on a Saturday sans reservation and didn't have to settle for ""Next Door"". Pros: The Food more

Overrated, but all in all pretty good 4/28/2007

A bit overrated, but all in all the food was pretty good. I don't see the hype nor its reputation as a celebrity hotspot, but I admit that the rock shrimp is to die for. I would revisit again, but I wouldn't go out of my way to do so. There are definitely better places out there. more

If you wanna eat Sushi, don't go to Nobu! 4/6/2007

Nobu isn't the best sushi restaurant in NYC although some of kitchen appetizers are good.\r A waiter who served for us wasn't nice.(Is it because I'm Japanese?)\r I just don't understand the reason why Nobu is so popular.\r You can pay less money and have more delicious sushi. I think it's all about fame.\r I won't go back to Nobu Next Door. Pros: good appetizers Cons: sevice, loud, expensive more

Nobu still has 'IT' 3/21/2007

Seated promptly, greeted warmly. Waitress on top of everything. Drinks, whether sake, wine or beer, kept flowing. Even tap water glasses constantly refilled without ever having to ask. Edamame, sashimi salad, tuna tataki, rock shrimp, miso glazed cod, calamari salad, yellowtail with jalapeno and cilantro, and lobster salad WERE ALL PERFECTLY DELICIOUS. After all that (we double ordered some) we had sushi and left room for the bento box. You cannot ask for more. And saying hi to a receptive Jay Z on the way out didn't hurt either. Pros: food decor service more

A YEAR LATER... stillllll talking about it! 2/26/2007

Went to Nobu over a year ago... on a whim... on a Thursday or Friday night... both myself and my bf didn't think we'd get into Nobu w/o a reservation.. so we naturally went to Next Door first. We already knew about the extensive wait that would result if we would get in at all.. but since I had never been.. it was important to us to try. Next Door said that they could accomodate us in an hour and a half.. and my bf just casually asked about the wait at regular Nobu and was told that it was full (no surprise there). So, after leaving our cell number with the hostesses, off we went to a bar around the corner to wait... imagine our surprise and delight when an hour later.. they called to apologize that Nobo Next Door's estimated wait looked like it was going to be longer than expected... however, since my bf had inquired about regular Nobu, they had called over and gave us a table there that had been reserved but was a no-show! Now THAT'S great service! The wait staff was just as impressive.. suggesting portion sizes and encouraging orders that might interest us. Great yellowtail... the best I've ever had... as well as rock shrimp tempura to dream about... and the miso cod was great (and for a non-fish lovin' girl...u know it's gotta be good!). Even the pumpkin tempura was fantastic. Don't believe the nay-sayers... it's something u need to experience. more

A Worthy Splurge 2/11/2007

First, I should admit I'm not a lover of raw fish. Having said that, I thoroughly enjoyed both the sushi and cooked fish at NND. After reading other reviews, I can't say the lighting was too dim or the tables too packed in or the service rude or rushed. In fact, I think it lived up to most of the hype. The waitress was pleasant and the food arrived at perfect intervals. Our party of 3 was seated promptly (a 20 min. wait at 7pm on a Saturday night) and we shared several dishes and two desserts. I highly recommend the rock shrimp tempura, black cod, spicy seafood soup, new style sashimi, and all of the rolls--even the eel which I would never have imagined myself eating.\r \r For those who say it's too pricey, that may be. I knew I would be spending around $100 per person and that was almost exactly what it ended up being. We enjoyed an excellent bottle of sauvignon blanc (Redmond Reserve) which perfectly complemented the fish dishes) and some deliciously decadent dessert wine (Bonny Doon) along with the chocolate bento box and a sticky pudding. I guess it's a matter of expectation, but I felt the overall service, food quality and price were reasonable and well worth the occasional splurge--even for a non-avowed sushi lover like myself.\r Pros: nice atmosphere, good people watching Cons: a definite splurge more
