My wife and I who are both gluten intolerant were very pleased to find a gluten free bun option available at Edgefield! Good Job McMenamins! Thank YOU!

The grounds rock, the art is fantastic, the beers are up to standards with other mediocre micro-breweries... however:\r \r What does it take to get a HAPPY, speedy wait person o...

Simply Relaxing 4/27/2008

I've always loved Edgefield for the beautiful grounds and amazing deals on wine tasting and now that I live close to it I visit it at least once a month. My husband and I will often trot over to have dinner at the Power House then take a walk up the the golf course bar and then back down to the wine tasting area... it's a great place to sit and visit with friends or listen to live music outside of the Little Red Shed. It's also a great place to stay- except on the weekends if you want a quiet night. As I read the reviews I""m annoyed with the over and over again ""and there's no tv in your room!"" For me, I go to McMenamins because it's inexpensive, I can usually find privacy, and I can GET AWAY from the phone and tv! I don't want a tv in my room when I'm on vacation- I'd rather go out and experience the hotel I'm staying at our the city I'm in! Pros: Beer Selection, Quaint and Relaxing Atmosphere, Great Deals, Beautiful Grounds, Lots to walk around and see Cons: McMenamin's well known average service, loud on weekends more

Good breakfast and lunch 12/29/2007

We arrived at noon on a saturday and were seated promptly. There were only 4 other tables being served and our waiter was very attentive and kept our water anad coffee filled. We ordered the ""Scrambled eggs and Chorizo"" and the ""Black Rabbit Burger"". The chorizo was nice and spicey without being the normal greasy but could use more eggs. The burger had wonderful taste and crispy seasoned bacon. Overall a good experience. Pros: Taste, quick service, attentive staff Cons: price more

Lousy service... some breakfast items are good 12/12/2007

Every McMenamins affiliated restaurant has sub par service, but the last time I went to the Black Rabbit it was horrendous. When my girlfriend and I first arrived they said ""we are booked it will take 20 minutes... however it could take less."" We waited for an hour. (we almost left at 40 minutes but were told we were next) Then when we were let into the restaurant they only had 8-10 tables they were waiting on. There were 3 or 4 waitress' for those 8-10 tables and they were still slow. Our waitress was friendly but getting a refill of coffee or water was like pulling teeth. \r The breakfast food is good and I'd suggest the crunchy french toast if you don't mind something a little sweet for breakfast. If you enjoy a little garlic they also have good red potatoes. If your looking for relatively good price and food then the breakfast is worth it. However don't expect good service and your food might be cold when you get it which has happened a number of times prior. However I rarely ask to have them warm it up because of how poor their service is. I might go back because the atmosphere and food I enjoy but if their service doesn't improve I'll never eat their again. Pros: Breakfast is good. crunchy french toast, roasted red potatoes, atmosphere and decorations I enjoy Cons: Service is often sub par, has recently been awful! Sometimes food is barely warm when it arrives and its darn near impossible to get a coffee or water refill more

wonderful experience 11/6/2007

The Black Rabbit restaurant is the perfect place to bring a first date or the family for the holidays. We had a wonderful time, the atmosphere was great with interesting history and something new to look at around every corner. The menu has several items that were so amazing it was hard to choose. When we did the food came out perfect, the flavors blended together wonderfuly and the presentation was beautiful. Our service was friendly, knowledgeable, and prompt. Our server was able to read exactly what we wanted out of our experience. I highly recomend checking out this property, its fantastic! Pros: Great overall experience Cons: Make sure to make a reservation more

Don't waste your money 10/12/2007

We are huge fans of this, I'll admit chain. We have been to other locations and enjoyed ourselves so I hat to have to say this. Don't wast your money on the Black Rabbit. Service was fine, nothing special. Our starter was calamari and was very good but we spent over a $100 on this tab and the rib eyes were the worst I have ever had. I don't like my meat over cooked and med rare is my standard with pink expected. This was rare and I do mean rare. The flavors all worked well together but the chef has no idea what med rare is. I wanted to love this food because I love the pub that is also at the Edgefield but I couldn't. The quality of meat isn't there either, it was very grisly and I'm a person who loves the fat in a rib eye for the flavor it brings. I could hardly eat it, so I didn't. We left half eaten steaks on our plates and didn't take it home but the waiter never asked why. Maybe that's why the chef left it raw, so I could cut it. When I spend that kind of money on food, I expect a good dinner. I could have and have done better at home. I am very sad. Pros: Great things to see and do, go to the pub for a burger instead. Cons: The food more

Unimpressed 6/24/2007

I've been to several McMenamins throughout the Portland area. Typically I love their service, atmosphere and food; however, despite three visits, I remain unimpressed with the service at McMenamin's Edgefield. Most recently, my husband and I paid a visit to Lucky Staehly's Pool Hall on the Edgefield property. It took nearly a half hour for us to be noticed by a waitress (actually, we had to flag her down, she had checked on several tables around us, but failed to stop by our table). When we did finally get her attention, she had an attitude that made us seem like we were the biggest inconvenience in her day. She took our order with a snotty attitude and we had to wait another 45 minutes to actually get our food. The service we got on our previous visit to Lucky Staehly's Pool Hall was average, but not stunning.\r \r On a prior visit to the Black Rabbit Restaurant, we waited nearly 15 minutes before a staff member even saw that we were waiting to get a table...as were several other people. We waited quite a while for our food, which wasn't that tasty (not typical McMenamins quality) and then that was the last that we saw of our waiter until he brought the check. \r \r My husband and I are both restaurant owners ourselves, and this type of service is completely unacceptable. Pros: Beautiful property, fun atmosphere Cons: Horrible service!! more

Good pub - but no dogs 6/3/2007

Edgefield is actually not a typical McMenamins. It's sprawling and is sometimes a victim of its own success on busy summer evening on the outside patio. It's nice to go out and have that ""out in the country feel"", just don't take your dog as - unlike most other McMenamins places - you can't take your dog in at all.\r \r Good beer, reaonable food, good location vs. unattentive staff and a bad pets policy. Pros: Beer, quirkyness, location Cons: No pets, staff aren't all that attentive. more

Dont waste your money at Black Rabbit 5/22/2007

We were originally gonna eat at the Power House there but there was a 20 min wait. So, my bf and I walked over to the Black Rabbit( A resturant at Edgefield) It should have been a sign to us to not eat there when we saw how empty it was. But we waited becuase we were hungry. Through the course of the wait three staff memebers walked right past us without a greeting. Finally we were sat. Then we waited and waited . Finally we were about to leave and the waitress showed up. She took my drink order and left without asking my bf if he would like anything. Finally she came back and we ordered his drink and she took our orders. We got our food, but still no drink for my bf. The food was awful and way way way over priced with small portions. Our tab was $80 for two drinks and two main dishs. Our waitress seemed bothered by our presence and we had to wait long intervals before she remembered that we were her table. I dont normally complain which I should have and somehow I still tipped. Save your self the money and stick to the Power House even if theres a wait!! Pros: relaxing environment Cons: bad food/ poor service more

A Good Hotel for Drunks 1/10/2007

We stayed 1 overpriced night here to check it out for our future wedding. I won't go back there ever!! The king mattress was old and springy, the rooms did not have their own climate control. We were freezing all night with the crappy blankets they gave us. I kept getting woken up from loud talking and screaming in the halls and the room next door was SO loud, it felt like I knew them intimately. Oh yeah, people kept gathering 3 stories down below our window and we could hear everything! That's WITH earplugs in!\r The most important thing to me about a hotel is a feeling of privacy when you are in your room. This hotel is SO LOUD! It seems to actually be louder in your room than in the hallways! As my fiance said to me, it is a hotel designed for people who get trashed and pass out on the bed. Probably better than sleeping in the parking lot... Pros: Good food Cons: Lousy Hotel more

You must experience! 11/13/2006

This place is great to go to especially in the summer time. You walk around to differant areas like a wine tasting room, pub, and other small bars. There are many resturants to choose from but the black rabbit is the best and it is well worth it. I would reccomend going to black rabbit and getting reservations for a little later and then going down stairs to the wine tasting while you are waiting for dinner. The wine tasting is great and it is also cheap. You can get 5 tastes for just $1. \r This place is beautiful and great for dates. Pros: Great variety Cons: That I didn't have more time. more
