Best

My wife and I who are both gluten intolerant were very pleased to find a gluten free bun option available at Edgefield! Good Job McMenamins! Thank YOU!

The grounds rock, the art is fantastic, the beers are up to standards with other mediocre micro-breweries... however:\r \r What does it take to get a HAPPY, speedy wait person o...

Ruby Ale! 11/5/2006

I love this place, and have stayed a number of times, however, something has happened in the last couple of years. We just recently stayed the end of October, and the place was dirty. Our room had dirt caked along the floor edges, there were bottle caps under the table, so it was obvious it had not been vacuumed prior to our arrival, and the bathrooms were dirty. The mattress on the bed sagged in the middle to the point that it was almost funny. The noise on the porches is horrendous. When the pool hall closes, the clientele goes onto the porch, and creates all kinds of havoc, despite the signs asking for quiet after hours, and hotel staff seem to be unable to take care of the problem. What happened? I hope you can fix this. I really want to come back. Edgefield is charming, and the european style rooms and baths aren't bad, they just need cleaning. The artwork is wonderful, as are the grounds. One of the nicest places to be is in the barrel room in the winery wing. The reason I liked it so much is it is a nice relaxed, quiet place, where you can go to talk and sample wine. Unfortunately, there is now entertainment scheduled for 7 pm. It has not added to the ambiance. Please Please Please get your groove back. Edgefield is too nice of a place to let slide like this. more

LOOKS ARE DECEIVING-IT'S A HOSTEL 9/20/2006

This is a hostel-make no mistake.Grounds gorgeous, but an attempt to disguise property and justify charging >$100 for a dorm room.\r They cut corners and call it ""charm"".No:phones, tvs,in room ironing boards/irons,hair dryers or bathrooms, even no sample shampoos/soaps as can be found in any motel.\r $130 for a small sitting room w/a cot and another tiny room with a double bed.Furniture was pleather covered adirondacks.Floor and furniture alike were covered with dirt.\r Noise level constantly elevated (as in most youth hostels)-aggravated by paper thin walls and loud crowds of drunken visitors to the many bars onsite.Expected to sustain loud partying of fellow guests on balcony directly outside our window.\r We had to walk to end of hall every single time we had to use the bathroom (even more inconvenient when you consider all the beer served onsite!) \r All of this would not be as bad if staff were not so incompetent and rude.My brother had his wedding here and staff messed up his plans from the start by double booking his wedding and forcing him to move it indoors.Everyone in my party had issues with staff from waiting 15 mins. for a carry-out salad that had to be retrieved personally from the kitchen to waiting 5 minutes for a drink only to have a staff member cut to the front demanding a drink for himself after working all day. \r In general staff is extremely slow and laissez-faire.Found ourselves constantly waiting for everything. The real underlying problem here is the price.Have seen and come to expect most of this behavior while staying in hostels in Europe and have never been surprised or complained. The reason is that hostels cost around $30-$40 a night-so you get what you pay for. If this hostel were $30,I would have no problem. It is the fact that they had the gall to charge me $130 per night for far less service than a Red Roof Inn and far more hositility that irks me.\r Pros: grounds arepretty.bed comfortable. Cons: uncomfortable/dirty.rude staff/poor service.no bathrooms in room.expensive. more

Expectations not met 9/10/2006

You would think that a place like this would have some good food. IT WASN'T!!! The fish was over cooked and salty even though they charged $15 plus dollars for the entrees. Presentation sucked. They gave me luke warm water for my tea and instead of hot water. The service lacked. We had to wait a while for courtyard seating that was empty. Pros: nice atmosphere Cons: Food, service, welcoming staff more

Love this place, but don't try to schedule your event here... 9/2/2006

We got married here, and we love the atmosphere and the rooms at Edgefield. The hotel, restaurant, and catering staff were all wonderful. However, the events planning staff were just awful, which surprised us because we were spending thousands of dollars and had brought a lot of people to stay at the lodge (our party scheduled numerous rooms in lodge all weekend, ate in the restaurants, went to the bars and winery, bringing in quite a bit of business). Jacqueline, who was our planner, never even returned my calls. During the wedding weekend, it was impossible to get hold of anyone in charge, the ballroom was not set up for us in time, they made numerous mistakes, and they overcharged us. Then, after the wedding, they sent an evaluation form, which we took the time to fill out carefully, explaining the problems we'd identified, and thanking them for taking the time to address them. They never even responded! I still like the lodge and the food, and I appreciated how great the rest of the staff was. But I wouldn't recommend holding your special event here. Pros: beautiful and scenic, great lodge and restaurants Cons: events planning more

don't bother 7/11/2006

Don't bother going to the Edgefield, the drive isn't worth the attitude and utter lack of help. When my party arrived, my boyfriend's mother appoligized for being in a waitresses way, to which the waitress told her, ""yes, you are in my way."" Then, our party of six sat for 20 minutes before our waitress even attempted to help us. I would like to tell you that she was busy, but she was just standing by the waiter station chatting it up. I know that many McMenamins have notoriously bad service and I normally take it as part of the charm, but this was unacceptable. Pros: it is beautiful out there, nice and relaxing atmosphere Cons: service is unacceptable more

GREAT 5/31/2005

OK everyone...look at these reviews for Edgefield. First of all, many are old and need to be removed!!! Overall, most of the reviews are from pretentious stressed-out brides and their friends who should have been married somewhere in the Pearl! Every true Portlander knows the true McMenamins experience...average service, great beer, fabulous times with friends and unforgetable memories. If you are expecting a ROYAL wedding...mary Prince Charles. Edgefield is truly a Potland icon. more

LOVED IT! 10/24/2004

My boyfriend recently took me to Edgefield at the end of a long weekend getaway. First, we spent 2 nights in downtown Portland at a major chain and paid nearly $150/night and all we got was a generic room and parking. Our 1 night at Edgefield far surpassed that experience in every way for less than $120 for the Hammerhead package. It included 2 meals, a king room w/ sitting area, beer and all the atmosphere we could absorb. No cookie-cutter rooms or experience here! The distillery was my favorite with freshly squeezed lemon juice in my Lemon Drop Martini. I noticed several staff members present who chose to hang out in their off-time, which I think speaks highly of the place. We both left wishing we'd gone to Edgefield first. Pros: great value, fabulous food, wonderful service more

Hammerhead fan 1/22/2004

I would highly recommend McMenamins Edgfield to anyone with an appetite for great beer, good food, and an inviting atmosphere. As far as lodging is concerned, if you are mature enough to appreciate the historic virtues of such a place, I guarantee you will not be disappointed. I don't know how one couldn't enjoy something so rich in simplicity. It's very relaxing NOT having phones ringing and televisions blaring, and there's so much on the grounds to absorb, enjoying the experience is a given. We loved the great little pubs; especially the old-style hospitality in the Little Red Shed. We felt like we'd been swept back in time! It was absolutely wonderful, and I would recommend Edgefield for a quiet get-away OR for a fun-filled weekend with a large group. We'll be back!!! Pros: Excellent beer, Great Food, Great Hospitality more
