Editorial review from Citysearch 10/30/2013

Let me start out by saying that this is the BEST salon experience I have ever had and NELIDA is without a doubt the most talented and experienced colorist I have encountered.\r \r BACK STORY:\r After dyeing my hair with the same shade/brand of box color (light golden blonde) for the past 2 years, I decided to go a shade warmer to what I thought would be a strawberry blonde. DISASTER- It turned out fire engine red on top and ash brownish everywhere else.\r \r In a mad panic, I dumped more box color on it to try to fix it. (stupid I know) This only made the color worse and fried my hair.\r \r MY EXPERIENCE:\r I made a desperate call to Tricoci color correction. Miraculously they were able to take me later that evening. The receptionist on the phone assured me that Nelida could make it all better and she couldn't have been more right.\r \r I was so embarrassed to be going to a high-end salon looking like such a hot mess. (I'm fresh out of college with no money so I thought I'd feel out of place at a fancy salon regardless.) But when I arrived, every staff member I encountered treated me with so much RESPECT without a hint of judgement.\r \r Nelida treated me with all the WARMTH & EMPATHY of a close friend and made it clear that she was not only going to fix my color but also achieve the shade I had wanted to begin with. She asked me methodical questions about what had happened without making me feel stupid and told me exactly what she was going to do to fix the problem. (Keeping in mind that my hair was in a fragile state from the chemicals I'd used)\r \r Even though I was squeezed into her busy schedule, she never once made me feel like I was monopolizing her time. She said, ""Don't worry, we will be here til midnight if we need to. You're going to look great!""\r \r Nelida even empathized with my need to save money and explained several ways in which I can continue coloring my hair at Tricoci that would fit within my tight budget.\r \r End product: The color was EXACTLY WHAT I WANTED ALL ALONG. I couldn't believe it- I couldn't even see the signs of damage that I had expected.\r \r END THOUGHTS:\r I can't think of a customer service experience in which I encountered a better marriage of talent, warmth, professionalism, and dedication. Each member of the staff- especially Nelida and manager, Eric Demadara made my terrible mistake into an incredibly positive experience. more

AVOID 1/20/2010

The staff is snobby and rude. The stylists are average at best. And as a bonus you get to blow out your own hair at a station after the cut and color. No matter what your new cut is they will not help you style it. The best part is that this blow out station is in the middle of a heavily walked isle so all eyes are on you and you are made to feel that you are in the way once they have rinsed you out. There are many better salons in the city you can visit. Pros: Nothing Cons: Poor service, you get to blow out your own hair more

GREAT HAIRSTYLIST MAYA 7/15/2009

I came to see MAYA because my friend goes to her so she told me to give her a try... I have very hard hair to style and everywhere i went for a haircut they never teach me how to do it at home.. I went to see Maya on Monday she spent a hour with me talking to me about my hair and why i hate it soo much so when we got to the haircut she told me step by step what she was going to do and she showed me the products i should use. WOW all i kept thinking is this girl is really good. When we got done she told me they way she styles my hair i would be able to do the same at home. I looked great and when i went home and washed it she was right.. I love her and i will go to her forever. So who ever reads this trust me go see her she is the BEST. THANX MAYA.. My hair looks great just like u said it would i never thought it was possible to look this good. Pros: MAYA gave me the best haircut!!!! Cons: hard to locate salon more

BEST STYLIST MAYA!!! 1/27/2009

I was in the salon a few weeks ago and i came across a great stylist maya. I have to tell you guys this was the best haircut i ever had in my life. When this women cuts your hair not only is she talented but she listens to your every word what works for you and what doesn't. Her haircuts last months you hair would grow out so well you wouldn't believe. She is sooo sweet and caring and dead on about the latest fashions. I love her and I love the salon now. I have gotten a few haircuts there from different stylist and they were ok but Maya's haircuts are the best.... Everyone go see her you won't regret it!!!! THANKS MAYA Pros: AS long as Maya is there I am there Cons: always busy a lot of noise more

Great Cut and Very Friendly Service 1/24/2009

I went to Mary Pat for a hair cut and I had a great experience. She was super nice and did a great job! I am requesting her every time I go there now. Plus she new a ton about the cubs which was great conversation. For all you guys out there looking for a good place to get a hair cut at a decent price, I recomend Mary Pat 100%. Plus you cant beat the location right on michigan ave and there is a really nice equinox fitness gym on the same floor so you can work out and get styled up without having to run all over town. Oh, and the building has its own parking garage!!! What more could you ask for. Pros: Friendly, Good Price more

Great haircolor! 10/15/2008

I got my hair colored for the first time at mario's. my friend gave me a gift certificate. I had Becky do my hair and at first I was nervous but I could tell she was very experienced and my highlights came out AWSOME! I also had my haicut by Yasmine and I loved my cut. The salon was a little busy and kind-of crazy but Becky and Yasmine have a client for life! Pros: great hair services for not a lot of money compaired to other salons Cons: not that relaxing, but my hair looks great, lots of compliments. more

Bad experience, won't be back! 9/2/2008

This is the worst salon/spa I've ever been to. I recently got a mani/pedi here by the rudest woman on the planet. It was so difficult making the appointment because you have to call their 800 number a wait forever for a appt. It does look like a factory outlet salon. The staff are so rude and unprofessional. The lady that did my mani wasn't even looking at what she was doing, she was more concerned with gossiping with her co-workers. And she kept coughing in my face! I had to ask her to please cover her mouth. When I go to get my nails done I want it to be a pleasant experience, this was not! There's too many nice spas in Chicago to waste your time here. Cons: Unprofessinal staff, overpriced services more

Overpriced salon with no customer service! Won't dry your hair after service. 9/2/2008

This place is ridiculous! I recently got highlights there. When I made the appointment the guy on the phone confirmed that the price was $90 for full highlights. However, when I checked out I was told it was 130.00 because prices START at 90.00 and they could not tell me why my highlights were now 40.00 more. My hair is shoulder length, so I'm not buying the excuse that the check out guy said about my hair being longer than most girls. This is just a way for them to rip people off! What really ticks me off about this place is that after my color service, I was passed to someone else who washed my hair and then sent to a SELF SERVE STATION with hair dryers for me to use! I just paid $130 for highlights and I'm drying my hair myself! Isn't this standard to have the stylist dry your hair after you pay for any hair service?! They told me if I wanted someone to dry my hair it would be an extra $45-85. This place is a rip-off with no customer service. I'll never return! Pros: None, you can find many better salons in Chicago Cons: Overpriced, rude staff, won't dry your hair, prices change at check out more

worst haircut of my entire life!!!!!!!!!!!!! 8/4/2008

i called and FRANKIE was recommended. i told them i wanted a consultation as it was my first time there. i was assured if i came in a little early for my appt i would be able to speak with the stylist, i came in early and she was late. she rushed, had no hair magazines(what kind of salon doesn't have hair magazines), she was so busy running her mouth and telling me how she knew what she was doing that she wasn't listening. she heard bits and pieces put it all together and i ended up with no hair after i told her i was GROWING MY HAIR and only wanted her to clean it up and shape it. NOT CUT IT ALL OFF. on top of cutting it all off it was an ugly mishapen haircut. she did it in like 5 min (NO SKILL). EVERYTHING i told her not to do she did. when i called back to see what could be done as that was a lot of money to throw down the drain (i had to go a few days later to a REAL stylist and get a REAL haircut) i was given the runaround, and told a manager would call me back. well it's been 10 weeks or so and i'm still waiting. now my hair is super short. I HAD TO GO EXTREMELY SHORT TO OVERRIDE THAT DISASTER I GOT FROM FRANKIE,but at least its cute. my hair was shoulder length I WAS GROWING IT OUT for something different and now i have very short hair due to the incompetence of a careless person, and a shady fake salon that markets itself as if all the stylists are trained. LOL trained my @ss. Cons: everything more

Nalida is Phenomenal with color. She's the #1 requested per customer service!!! 6/18/2008

I met Nalida 5 years ago and every time I step out of Tricoci because of her I am amazed. I have had her experiment with blonds, brunettes, reds, colors/highlights and her work is just top Notch. She knows when to add low lights/tone, she's Genius with hair color. I have seen her work with different individual's hair colors/types across the years and all her clients just keep coming back. When you call and book and appointment with her try and call in advance as she gets the most requests. To top it off she's really sweet and really listens and provides great feedback!!! more

LOOKING FOR COLORIST ROXANNE MARIO TRICOCI 900 N MICHIGAN?? 5/10/2008

I'm no longer at Mario Tricoci 900 N. Michigan and am now located in Lincoln Park. I cut AND color at a trendy PRIVATE salon that's not a corp. and much more intimate and personal. It's called Salone Capriccio and is located@ 2167 N Clybourn Ave. and the phone number is 773-665-2542. Hope to see you all again soon!!!! more

Awful!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 5/30/2007

Absolutely will never go back!!!!!!! NEVER!!!!! I got a partial highlight. It was done by a ""senior"" level girl and it had to be done twice because she missed spots. Also, the partial is not a partial, it's just the top strip of your head and a few hairs on the side of your face. Awful! You can go to Robbert Jeffrey's on Halsted and get half of your head done by a senior stylist for $85 and it looks great. more

great customer service!! 5/5/2007

I tried Mario's for a second time after my bf gave me a gift certificate. The girl that colored my hair (Janet) was so nice and spent so much time with me that I really felt taken care of! My color looked AWSOME!! I had Miguel for a haircut after the color and I have never had a better haircut! I will definetly be back!!!!! Pros: Janet and Miguel more

ROXANNE IS AMAZING!!!!!! 4/17/2007

I had the best experience I've ever had in my life with a colorist Roxanne. She's young, fresh and did the most amazing hilites that I've ever had. She listened to what I wanted and treated me like a queen. The color was absolutely perfect!!!! She also was very reasonable in price and made me feel extremely comfortable. I would HIGHLY RECCOMEND ROXANNE to anyone who wants GREAT COLOR at a RESONABLE COST!!!! Pros: Great Color.....Excellent treatment!!!!! Cons: Not very stylish salon more

HORRIBLE MASSAGES--waste of money!!!! 4/5/2007

I just had the worst massage of my life. I was excited to use a gift cert. for the signature massage and I couldn't be more disappointed. The music in the massage room was too loud--I heard people talking loudly outside in the hallway and the massage itself was extremely mediocre. I suspect the masseuse was either not trained or very poorly trained. Her strokes were very fast and abrupt and the whole massage felt very rushed. She didn't really tuck the sheets properly when working on different parts of my body (I felt exposed at times) I have had better massages from massage school students and even from my untrained boyfriend. Do not go to Diana---she's AWFUL!! In addtion, the entire staff at mario tricoci are very rude and unprofessional. I will never go there again!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Pros: NOTHING!!! Cons: loud, rude, rushed, expensive, unprofessional more

Manicures given by Cruella de Vil 2/1/2007

The other day I received a manicure at Mario Tricoci (900 N Michigan). This lady was the rudest person I ever met! When I sat down she began filing my nails down without even asking me what shape I would like my nails, as she was too busy talking to her co-workers about her new haircut. When I interrupted her to let her know that I like my nails square shaped, she gave me a dirty look and went about doing what she wanted. She repeatedly said ""why are you watching me?....don't you trust me?...look that way...look to the left...seriously, I don't want you watching me do your nails."" I believe that if I pay for a service I can look in any direction I choose. The rudeness went on and on and when I complained at check-out, no one could find a manager. I waited over 20 minutes and then realized that this isn't worth being upset anymore. I got a crappy manicure from Cruella De Vil and that's apparently the standard at Mario Tricoci. I'll never go back. Pros: Nice Location Cons: Noisy Warehouse atmosphere, RUDE staff! more

Terrible! 1/14/2007

I've only been to the 900 North Michigan Ave. Mario Tricoci and the salon is terrible! The only person who i was very impressed with was a colorist named Nelida. She is fantastic! There is one colorist that i don't recommend and her name is Marisa. She acts like a know it all and her color is not even good. From customer service and the wait time and some parts of the salon looks like its falling apart- it's awful! If they are charging all that money for services then the salon should look good. I see Mario Tricoci as a high priced supercuts! Don't even waste your time. Pros: Nelida the colorist Cons: Where do i begin? more

Great highlights and cut! 11/13/2006

Laura is amazing with blonde coloring! I've been going to her for 2 years and she consistently gives great color! Also, Paris does a great cut! I would highly recommend either of them! Yes, it's a bit pricey, but we're talking about hair here!!! Pros: consistent Cons: pricey more

hair factory 11/11/2006

in a word , terrible . if looking like a oakbrook housewife ( ""friends cut"" and chunky blond stripes ) is your goal, then hey this salon is for you . this chain only knows about three different cut and color looks , but puts them on thousands of women a day. i'll leave this one for ""madge and the girls"" from iowa , in town for their fashion weekend. i however , will continue my search for a quality salon . more
