Best

The food at Kittichai was sublime. Some of the best food I have ever eaten. My wife had the vegetable stir fry and I had the pork tenderloin. We both ordered the Jasmine rice and ...

Worst

I have enjoyed dinner and drinks here before, but on a recent Friday night I was very disappointed in the attitude at the door. The front door bouncer was holding a people back, ...

Best Fancy Thai 11/2/2006

This is the best Thai food i have ever had. I have been at least 5 times and will keep going back. The value is phenomenal as well. The Chocolate BBQ ribs are my absolute favorite. Foie gras and duck dish is also fabulous. Drinks are fun and inventive. Atmosphere makes you feel like you are somewhere exotic. I can't wait to go back! Pros: trendy scene, drinks, Thai food more

Impressive Space - Great Food 11/1/2006

It is astonishing how a bar in NYC keeps its standard in the eyes of consumer for so long. Thom Bar is still an elegant space that makes one feel fabulous upon arrival. The dishes that are featured at the bar are great and to the point. I also found out one can also order dishes that they feature at the restaurant, Kittichai that I actually took advantage by ordering as soon as I was told. The interior is edgy yet comfortable and stylish not to mention the atractive staff that from the door to the bartendes. more

Simply Brilliant 11/1/2006

I am in love with the Thom Bar. First, the food is amazing! I love the fusion of flavors. Second, the ambiance - the decor, lighting and music all compliment each other (and me for that matter). Third, the drinks I like the selection of wines, and the mixed drinks are made well. Finally, the company - I always have a good time there with classy, fun people. Pros: Ambience, Service more

My favorite Thai... 10/25/2006

Ive been here many times and I just can't stop going. more

BEST Chilean Sea Bass 10/25/2006

Went here for my birthday with my boyfriend. We were late for our reservation- but we were seated the second we walked in! Nice/eclectic ambiance and the best chilean sea bass we have ever tasted. Great appetizers (tuna tartare) companied by great wine. Pros: AMAZING food, great service, perfect ambiance more

One of my absolute FAVORITES 10/22/2006

I've been here several times, the most recent on Friday 10/13 for one of my birthday dinners. Everything across the board was phenomonal. The service was knowledgable, polite and always attentive but never in your face. They had such a flow going you hardly noticed they were there and were only too happy to answer any questions we had. We were there for 3 hours and never once did we feel rushed at all even though it was a Friday night and the place was packed. The food, as always was delicious. The people at Kittichai get that pretty people and trendiness alone do not a fantastic restaurant make. One expects amazing service....and at prices like these, rightfully so. Kittichai has all of that and then some. Pros: SERVICE, Decor/ambiance, Food Cons: None really more

Killer atmosphere, staff, and drinks 10/17/2006

I go to Thom Bar about twice a month. The staff is nothing but friendly and accomadating (not to mention attractive). When I was leaving one night the hostess knew that it had started raining, so she went and got me an umbrella from the desk downstairs! I love the atmosphere here. It is a great place where you can still feel like you are hanging out with someone without that intensity of a business meeting or a first date. It is a nice place to take a client. The drink menu and atmosphere offers subject for good conversation, and the setup is private but condusive to mingling and networking. Pros: atmosphere Cons: ain't cheap, but worth it more

Terrible Brunch Experience 10/9/2006

I was so disappointed with the brunch last weekend. I had heard great things about the food/atmosphere but the food and service was awful. We had to ask our server 3 times for our drinks and our food took over a half hour to come out of the kitchen. My eggs benedict had obviously been sitting under the heat lamp for over 15 minutes as the top of the sauce had hardened over and the english muffin soggy. I barely touched it. My friends had not eaten their food either. The servers were lifeless and seemed unhappy to be there. The only thing I liked about the place was the decor...cute. Pros: Decor Cons: Lousy food, inattentive service more

Food Completely Dissapointing 10/5/2006

I had high hopes for Kittichai after what I've heard about it. Unfortunately, I was completely dissapointed in the food. There were no strong, distinct flavors in any of the dishes we ordered and I found it all to be much too spicy for my taste. I could have had better thai at almost any other city restaurant. I will say that the service was amazing and the decor and ambience was beautiful. Spend your money somewhere else in the city that will offer you an all-around great experience. Pros: Decor, Service, Romantic Cons: Food fell very short of expectations more

Trendy decor, terrible service 10/2/2006

The restaurant decor is JUST beautiful. The ambience is perfect dim lights, good music and orchids hanging in the pond with candles galore. We started of with martinis - lychee martinis are outstanding. I recommend tuna tartare, crispy jasmine rice crackers for appetizers. The food was exceptional; we had Chilean sea bass (cooked really well), monkfish curry, tiger prawns and organic chicken. Its good to order a few dishes and then share in order to taste different dishes on the menu. For desert we ordered the molten cake with banana ice-cream. I really liked the desert as well. The one and only downside to this place that seemed common from start was the undisciplined staff. The server was uptight, disorganized and discourteous. She was not friendly and helpful about what was good on the menu. The restaurant is definitely pricey but overall its worth trying. I recommend it! Pros: Trendy decor, good thai food Cons: a bit pricey, terrible service more

Wonderful Evening 9/24/2006

My first time at Kittichai was on Saturday evening with three friends and the experience turned out to be delightful. The restaurant is beautiful and the ambience perfect - dim lighting, sultry decor, good music, and orchids and candles galore. Surprisingly, the music was set at the perfect volume and my friends and I had no problems catching up over our delightful meal. We started with the shrimp, chocolate ribs (a must-try), and the tuna tartare, all savory. A friend raved over her whole fish while another enjoyed her pork dish. My boyfriend and I shared the monkfish in curry (surprisingly light) and the duck (flavorful with a crispy skin). The fried rice served in a carved pineapple was the perfect side dish. Most everyone had wine while I sipped a yummy dirty martini. Service was very quick and our server was polite. We will certainly return. more

Sublime 9/6/2006

Dinner at Kittichai last night was fantastic. Granted, it was a Wednesday when the throngs may not be out and about, but the food is creative and delicious, presentation excellent, atmosphere gorgeous and the waitstaff is utterly attentive without being annoying. Try the Chilean seabass entree and the mango sticky rice dessert. Also had a drink at the bar before dinner- the berry mojitos are delicious (albeit a tiny bit sweet)...reviewers who complain about a $14 drink shouldn't be having drinks in Manhattan. Overall- excellent spot for dinner and conversation. If you're deciding between Buddakan and Kittichai? Very similar idea, but Kittichai is less noise, hype and scene and more...sublime. Pros: Atmosphere, food more

Stunning restaurant, great food 7/11/2006

Went here for lunch with a friend and was pleasantly surprised by the service, restaurant decor, and food. Pros: Prix fixe lunch special, beautiful decor, excellent service Cons: Didn't like my lunch entree more

Beautiful space and great food. 7/10/2006

Beautiful space, tasty food and unexpectedly unpretentious staff. Gracious and lovely maitre'd seated us 30 mins later than our actual reservation but she made the waiting experience non-irritating unlike most other 'hot' restaurants that forget about you and give you unrealistic wait time estimates . Servers were nice but can sometimes be unattentive or seen hiding in their corners. I would definitely recommend the restaurant for dates and client entertaining! more

Glad I finally went. 6/26/2006

I'd been putting off going here for over a year, until this past weekend when a Le Cirque reservation fell through (what else is new?). Anyway, I'm very sad it took so long to finally decide to go here because it was amazing. We made reservations for 8pm on Friday less than two hours in advance. Pros: food, drinks, service more

F A B U L O U S ! 6/22/2006

The mixed berries mojito is the best I've ever had with plenty of muddled berries and lime - sweet but potent. We had the Thai Beef Salad (not really a salad), fish cake, seabass, filet mignon, and short ribs w/ green curry. Everything was excellent. The server, although with heavy accent, presented and explained each dish and sauces in a courteous and professional manner. He was also mindful in getting our table cleaned with new dishes after each course which is difficult to see in trendy NYC restaurants. As for desserts, the banana springroll was ok and the thai icecream sundae was good. Neither one was anything to rave about. Pros: Food, Ambience, Outdoor Seating & Smoking Cons: Expensive (mojito = $14) more

Gorgeous Orchid filled Restaurant/Lounge 6/22/2006

The decor is gorgeous with a white backdrop and lighted tropical flowers. Service is excellent. Drinks are inventive ith things like the pineapple capirinha that sound good. I had the berry mojito which is excellent. People were cool but, arrive later for a trendier crowd. OVerall, a beautiful place to grab a drink. Dinner was really great. I would go with the recommended fish of the day. Even though the chilean sea bass was really good, the catch of the day was out of this world. Reservations are recommended. The only thing that slightly bothered me is that the kitchen is really adverse to the altering of dishes in the slightest. Most other restaurants are usually very accommodating in that respect. more

NEVER AGAIN-Overratted 4/23/2006

I have been to kittichai a few times. I thought -maybe it was an off night -that it might get better BUT... Reasons why I HATE Kittichai: -VERY LONG WAIT OVER an hour for our table . At first they kept on saying its only going to take 15 minutes-ALL LIES! . Eventually -45 min. complaining they gave us a CHEAP bottle of champagne. Honestly don't even bother showing up on time- call fist! -AWFUL ATTITUDE- Although our waiter was nice, the hostess and her other helpers were VERY RUDE, CLUELESS, and INCOMPETANT. It seems like they have never worked in a restaurant. -I cannot bring clients over to this establishment b/c of their lack of respect to their customers and sense of timing (sorry but a 9 pm reservation and get seated at 10:30 is just very wrong) -The food- was okay OVERRATED, the decor was nice + Pros: decor Cons: RUDE staff more

the cook cannot possibly be thai. 4/2/2006

beautiful restaruant, nice waiters and waitresses even though none of them is actually thai. i personally loved all the decor especially the fountain with the floating circling candles. the thai poem on the wall is original. the food sucked straight up looks like a nice place to go out with date and have a couple of drinks. Pros: atmosphere, hospitality, not crowded Cons: price, food, no thai people more

A great night 3/27/2006

I took my parents and brother here for their 30th anniversary on Monday night. We sat down 6.30 - place doesn't get full until late - packed when we left at 10. Service was fantastic! Although many customers were very chi-chi, there was zero attitude. Our server was warm and attentive. We took our time, and didn't feel rushed. Food was yummy - portions are fine - we split 2 apps and each had an entree - I couldn't even finish mine because I wanted to save room for the dessert. Wok cooked organic chicken delicious but very spicey. Only complaint was that the desserts were so good we wanted the portions to be bigger (esp. jasmine flan), although it's best they weren't! Cocktails expertly mixed, by the glass wine was v. nice as well. Completely authentic? I don't know. But tasty, pretty, and pleasant. I'll be back! Pros: great atmosphere, great food, great service more

If you think great Thai food means orchids, sunken pool, attitude, expensive dishes and rude service, then this is the place for you. If you prefer authentic Thai food as well as authentic Thai hospitality, then go with other more impressive choices in Manhattan and Queens. Considering that one of the world's best Italian restaurants outside Italy can be found in Bangkok, we wonder why 60 Thompson could not do better.

Editorial
  • Sleek, hip and exotic, Kittichai feels like a Thai resort in miniature, with candles floating around the pool that's the centerpiece of the dining room. The guests, like those of the Thompson Hotel...
