The food at Kittichai was sublime. Some of the best food I have ever eaten. My wife had the vegetable stir fry and I had the pork tenderloin. We both ordered the Jasmine rice and ...

I have enjoyed dinner and drinks here before, but on a recent Friday night I was very disappointed in the attitude at the door. The front door bouncer was holding a people back, ...

Save your money...dissapointing food 7/23/2007

The service was excellent, but the food was beyond dissapointing. I have never written a review before, but I feel the need to since I was so uninspired. With all of the hype and excellent reviews, I expected the food to be at least decent. Unfortunately, the food was subpar. My friend and I each ordered appetizers and entrees, and not one of the dishes was tasty. The beef appetizer was gritty and tasted like sand, the shrimp appetizer had only two shrimps and a fishy flavor, the chicken had very little flavor and unappealing presentation, and the beef dish was just okay. This wasn't even a mediocre meal, it was just bad. And getting the check for almost $100 ( just for lunch) seemed like a shock after what we had just consumed. I'm sure exactly why people like this place...perhaps they are paying more attention to the elegant decor than the food. more

It's ok. 5/21/2007

We made dinner reservations through OpenTable. The decor is really nice and very romantic. The food isnt bad. I would recommend going there and get the $30 prefix meal. You get a choice of appetizer, a main meal and dessert. Just make sure you get there before 7pm and double check your bill. more

Always Closed for Private Events - Don't Bother 4/30/2007

Even if they do make some killer cocktails (open up your wallet by the way - but heck this is NY) - I would not recommend this bar to anyone for the simple reason that it is closed for private events so frequently. The chances you will go out here for nothing are extremely high. Out of the 4 attempts I made I have found them closed 3 times. I think they should just close it to the public altogether and use it only for private event rental - at least this way you don't get the false impression you can actually have a drink here. Pros: Good cocktails Cons: Closed for private events all the time, slow service more

What is the hype? 3/24/2007

Why? Why do people crowd up this place? Yes, this place has an awesome decor, but the fusion food sucked big time. They overdid the fusion part. Sadly, our favorite dish was the fried rice in the hollowed-out pineapple, and this is despite ordering many of their ""signature"" dishes. Pros: Decor Cons: Bad fusion Thai food more

Memorable dining experience 3/21/2007

I am a hotel concierge and received an invite from Kittichai to dine with a guest. Let me start by saying that this was an amazing experience! From the tasty, beautifully prensented food to the lovely decor to outstanding service...Seating was prompt..waitress was very friendly and professional..They make fantastic Mango Martinis and the grilled crispy rock shrimp marinated in sugar tamarind sauce is to die for!! I strongly recommed this restaurant! Pros: Prompt seating, friendly staff, great location more

never again 3/19/2007

this was the absolute worst service i've experienced in a long time. we had a late dinner reservation for 10:00PM for a birthday party. we arrived on time & were not seated for over an hour. when we complained, the hostess & the manager really could not care less. in fact they were downright bitchy, saying they couldn't just throw out the other diners... to which my response is: then why take reservations at all if you can't honor them??? i understand waiting a little bit for a reservation, but this long was unacceptable- & it was already late night! & the bad attitude on top on that was unnecessary. they finally agreed to comp our drinks, but only after we complained loudly numerous times & started to get testy (out of starvation as well as annoyance). we finally were seated & served dinner at 11:30PM, & by that point we were too ravenous to even notice what the food tasted like. Pros: decor Cons: very poor service more

delcious drinks, yummy food, ok service, nice decor 3/6/2007

Overall, a fun trendy place to go for a nice dinner. the food and service are just ok, but the drinks are delicious and the decor really adds to everything. i'd come back, but its a bit overpriced. more

delicious food, nice decor -- just make reservations 3/2/2007

my boyfriend and i went on a thursday night to check out what the hype was all about. we didn't make reservations, so when we got there around 8pm, the hostess told us that it would be about an hour wait. she was right. we waited exactly an hour before we were seated at a table. it was nice though, i had couple martinis - lychee and thai tea - which were both really tasty but not strong at all. we ended up ordering the duck and some kind of salad to start off, which is not on the online menu on their site. i don't recommend getting either one of those. the duck appetizer was $20 and the other salad was so spicy and herby that i almost had heartburn from the moment i had a bite. as for the entree, i ordered the chilean sea bass, which literally melts in your mouth and my bf ordered the porkchops, which was totally delicious also, but not seen on the online menu. overall, it was good. it got really loud at times, to the point where i couldn't hear my own bf from across the table. i would definately check out lunch or their pre-fix dinner menu..when it's not so crowded or loud. i give the place an A- Pros: food, ambiance/decor, martinis Cons: too loud and crowded more

Superb ambiance and hip crowd 2/24/2007

The ambiance is simply superb, with colorful fabrics that create a warm, romantic environment. Service is attentive and the food is the best Thai we have tasted in New York City to date. This is a great spot for special occasions or anytime you want to impress--or be impressed. Pros: Ambiance, food Cons: A little pricey for Thai food, but worth it more

A great disappointment 1/26/2007

I certainly can't agree with the editorial description that this is the ""city's best Thai."" The cool decor is matched neither by the food, nor the service. We were kept waiting 40 minutes for our reserved table, and then placed under an air duct blowing freezing air onto our party (this was in January!). Our table was pretty small (in fairness, they warned us about this when they moved us away from the air duct), and pretty crowded with dishes. There was little or no attempt to clear away dishes we had finished with, and no offer of clean plates for our entrees. The service seemed long on attitude and short on competence. Although some dishes (for example, the beef salad) were impressive, they generally fell well short of an acceptable standard. To illustrate, our shrimps were overcooked, and whatever delicate blend of herbs and spices had gone into our chicken and cashew nuts was completely masked by a gooey sickly sauce. We decided to skip dessert and will not be returning. Pros: Cool decor Cons: The food is grossly overrated. Poor service more

Terrible service and hidden gratuity fee on bill 1/20/2007

A friend and I went here last night and we waited forever to see our waitress. When we asked the host if we had a waitress he took the menus out of the hands of the people he just sat and gave them to us. When she did appear we were immediately asked for a card to open a tab. I noticed throughout the night that people around us kept coming and going as they weren't getting service and there was serious lag time btwn seeing our waitress throughout the night. When we asked for the bill it took her 10 minutes to come back and was holding the card we originally gave her - without the bill. My friend gave her another card and we ask to split it. Never did we see an itemized bill. We saw that our bill looked high for 3 drinks each and 2 plates of apps. We asked for an itemized bill which took another 10 mins and that she slammed down on the table. We noticed that a 20% gratuity had been added and we were only 2 people. we never saw the whole bill. When we asked for the manager he came over and was so incredibly rude to us. Speaking to us like we were 5 yr olds and never once could explain why the 20% was added and never told us that he agreed that we should have seen the full bill in the beginning before she took another card. Both my friend and I have worked in restaurants and have seen shady people doing stuff like this but never would a manager take their side. Not cool. Glad we didn't tip her double bec she sucked, didn't deserve her 20% and the place was totally not worth the money. Pros: Great food, drinks and a good atmosphere Cons: Service, rude staff, hidden fees more

Best Thai in NYC! 1/4/2007

A friend recommended Kittichai and it definitely exceeded my expectations. Hip/trendy atmosphere, friendly staff, great specialty cocktails and a Chilean sea bass that is simply to die for! It?s worth every penny?I highly recommend! Pros: The chic stmosphere, friendly staff and the amazing food (trust me on the Chilean sea bass!) Cons: My company was sub par...so much for random dates! more

Phenomenal ThaiFusion & UltraCool Service 12/11/2006

Rock shrimps and cocoa powdered ribs for appetizers - out of this world! Chilean sea bass that melts in your mouth and a jasmine flan for dessert that transported me to a different world. We expected a lot with this trendy SoHo establishment and were not disappointed. As dozens of other restaurant goers competed for the same Satruday evening experience , we experienced a bit of a wait, but our hostess had the mostess and came to our table, sat down with us delivering a smile, some laughs and excellent food recommendations. Service at all levels was outstanding. We simply did not want to leave the luxury of the experience, which explains why we had a bit of a wait, apparently no one else wanted to leave either. Pros: Amazing, innovative cuisine. Professional service with a smile. Beauty surrounds. Cons: The wait to get a table, but worth it! more

GoodThai food, 12/3/2006

Food at kittichai are better. compared to other Thai fusion such as Vong or Spice market. However, the services can be horrible if you go there with a date and have the same female server who waited our table. I'm not sure if it's actually her STRATEGY for getting good tip or else, but she was trying to flirt with my boyfriend the whole time we were there, especially when she told us the special. She TOTALLY ignored my presence, like i wasnt there. All she did was eye candying my boyfriend which was EXTREMELY inappropriate. Usually we would leave at least 20%-30% tip for an average service but that day left only 15%. I actually think she did NOT DERSERVE ANY TIP at all, but I feel bad for other fellow waiters who had to share tip with her that day. So if you want good food but dont mind a WAITRESS TRYING TO FLIRT with your man during the meal, go for it! Pros: Good Thai food, trendy spot Cons: HORRIBLE SERVICE more

Kittichai ROCKS. 11/19/2006

This is currently my favorite restaurant in NY. The food is unlike anything in the city. The ambience is fantastic. The food, atmosphere, and service all complement each other perfectly, and the result is a totally unique dining experience. I have been here at least 10 times. The Coconut Galangal soup is fabulous, as is the Hanger steak and the Tuna Tartare. Check this place out. Pros: food, staff, venue, ambience, bar, location, people more

Cool, relaxing yet upbeat atmosphere, fabulous food 11/14/2006

My parents came to visit and I took them to Kittichai, along with my 16 yr old brother who is extremely hard to please. Although he didn't understand the menu, he loved what he ordered. The food was fantastic and service impeccable! The setting was beautiful. I was a little annoyed that our table was in the corner in the restaurant when we had an earlier reservation. My mom didn't mind, but dad wanted to sit by the pool in the middle of the restaurant. Overall, I highly reccommend this restaurant. Pros: Decor, Food, Service more

If you think great Thai food means orchids, sunken pool, attitude, expensive dishes and rude service, then this is the place for you. If you prefer authentic Thai food as well as authentic Thai hospitality, then go with other more impressive choices in Manhattan and Queens. Considering that one of the world's best Italian restaurants outside Italy can be found in Bangkok, we wonder why 60 Thompson could not do better.
