We've been using Greenfield clinic for many years as it is conveniently located and we were getting adequate care. Over the past four years I noticed a mass growing on my dog's thigh. At every visit (at least twice a year) I kept asking Dr. Winnie and Dr. Hanke what it is, and both were reassuring me that it was just lipoma. Finally, my dog became lethargic, refused food, and was screaming with pain when touched. Dr. Hanke looked at him, pulled his leg, and announced that it was arthritis. He prescribed anti-inflammatory medication. Again, I asked about the mass and he again said it was a lipoma. Next day after we started medication, all symptoms disappeared including lethargy and lack of appetite. I called the clinic and asked if I could talk to the vet as it was surprising for me how the anti-inflammatory drug would so quickly improve appetite and wasn't there any underlying cause. The receptionist refused to let me talk to the vet and rather angrily stated that it was just arthritis. Finally, 3 weeks later, the 'lipoma' got very hard, hot, and red. We took the dog to a different vet who had performed an emergency surgery and excised a huge mast cell tumor that already progressed to grade 2. I can't express how disappointed and angry I am with Greenfield vets. Not only they did not do a simple fine needle biopsy to at least confirm that it was lipoma (the first step recommended by several Google sites as I found out later), but even later when there were obvious symptoms, Dr. Hanke could not put one and one together. HIGHLY UNPROFESSIONAL! I don't have time or desire to sue the clinic, and no money will bring my dog's health back, but these people should not be allowed to practice. more

I brought my two cats in for their yearly checkups and shots today, Dec 8, 2015. The 20 minute wait while the front desk person talked on the phone was annoying but not the reason I ended up walking out of the office without either of my cats being seen.\r First off, my younger cat, Frances, a rescue cat had been to their office twice before in this past year, and I was told they would get her spay records and first year shot records frim the Animal Rescue League. I called Greenfield Vet 2 months before she was due and again a week before I brought her in today to make sure they secured those records. I told the nurse the situation when we went into the exam room and she seemed bewildered. (By what I have no idea) She left the room and said she was going to call the Animal Rescue League and have Frances' shot records faxed right over. \r About two minutes after she left the exam room, Dr. Winnie came in and right away he was obnoxious and condescending. I asked him what was wrong since he seemed agitated and short-tempered and he rolled his eyes and shook his head as if to dismiss me. After a few curt words, he asked me what shots Frances needed. I told him I was hoping he would know. He left the room in a huff, and at that point, I knew my cats wouldn't be in loving hands, so I picked up both their carriers and walked out of the exam room. Dr. Winnie was was talking to the nurse and I told them I'll just take my cats elsewhere and he yelled out, ""If you figure out what shots she needs...."" and the door closed behind me.\r Just a week prior, Frances had gone into have blood drawn and the female doctor stick the needle right through her vein and out the other end. \r NEVER again will I take any animal to Greenfield Veterinary Hospital. more

One * is too generous. It's not a place where my dog found a good care. They can charge you thou. Oh they are so good at it. They don't have a med the dog needs regularly - they schedule for you to come, wait, then tell you the med will be in 2 days, then in 4 days, then my dog goes emergency for crisis bc they are unprofessional and irresponsible. Next month they charge twice the amount, the receptionist yells at me "" I am so disappointed with you"", her super talk as if we are market bargaining - and NO access to the doctor!!\r And no one noticed her emergency discharge papers recommendations , or her weight problems, indeed, this place is not for your pet welfare!! more

When i moved to Pittsburgh a few years ago I took my pets to the Big Easy Animal Hospital in Lawrenceville. I was always very pleased taking them here. I was living in Greenfield and could have taken them to the Greenfield Veterinary Hospital but I heard less than pleasant things about them from many different people that i met in the Greenfield area.\r Then a time came when Greenfield Veterinary Hospital was convenient in location and I told myself how bad could it be? My dog had a growth that they did a biopsy on and also removed for him. This is one of the most stressful things I have ever had to deal with in my life. I will NEVER return. The worst veterinary care I have ever encountered. If only I would have read the reviews on line before taking my baby here!\r The first appointment went fine, but it was the ones after that that I became unhappy. Dr. Handke was nice enough, but not great. I felt rushed when coming here and my questions that were answered were vague. I was talked over and felt stupid. I only saw Dr. Handke once in my 5 visits to the office within 2 weeks. Most of the technicians are okay, but one young blonde girl, seems to have the need to slam my dog down on the table when its time to do anything! This made me very angry, my dog is incredibly cooperative and would sit/lay down in any position you'd like him to be in easily. After the surgery my dog was sent home with a cone that was WAY too small. I mentioned this, but was ignored. I was also told it was going to be a hard healing process because of the way they stitched him up. On the first day my dog was so out of it, it didn't even matter because he wanted nothing to do with the incision, but i knew it was only a matter of time before he became curious. On day two he proved that he was able to reach the incision. He had all around supervision for 3 days but my boyfriend and I had to go back to work. On that third day when I got home he had torn his bandage off and had some of the suchers ripped out with raw skin being exposed and some bleeding. I panicked! Thankfully they were able to see him and he only needed to have it bandaged. This happened repeatedly. They charged me insane amounts to ""examine"" him and bandage him multiple times (poorly) when all they needed to do was give me a cone that fit my dog properly. The third time they wrapped him I told them it was pointless and he was just going to get it off. The technician told me he was confident it would stay. Hours later.. bandage off. At this point, i'm livid. Finally, not until I called in extremely upset the next day did I get someones attention. I explained everything and they told me to come in and they would look at the incision once more and properly fit him for a cone. We tried a different style, but they only had one size. I knew immediately it was WAY TOO SMALL. I didn't understand even for a second that this lady could possibly think he wasn't going to be able to bite/lick at the incision. My dog shows her with in minutes that he can indeed reach and shes dumbfounded! She told me she would order the correct size immediately and that it would be in in a few days. She specifically told me not to call in, that they would call me. Guess what!?They never called. They told me that they would supply the ecollar free of charge because of all of the trouble I have gone through. It kills me that I trusted these people. I know if i would have went to the Big Easy Animal Hospital things would have been a lot different. My dog would have healed at the proper time, he wouldn't have been in pain for so long and I wouldn't have been dishing out money every few days to these morons. Do yourself a favor and go to the Big Easy!!!! more

I have been reading the above comments and am saddened that a red sea pedestrian would represent their people so poorly - ""The heroic deed of Yehudit has inspired faith and courage in the hearts of Jews throughout the ages."" Your diatribe inspired nothing, you are a fraud to your namesake. more

Handke is Excellent 10/26/2012

I can definitely recommend Dr Handke, who was gentle and thorough in his examination of my very sick dog. He was willing to answer questions, had read my dog's chart and was not in a hurry. The techs were also great with my dog, though not so great about returning calls, getting meds ready when given hours advance notice, and at one point, "forgetting" to give me a prescription that very well may have helped my dog if it had been received in a timely way. I can't say anything good about Dr. Winnie. more

Editorial review from Citysearch 9/27/2012

Dr Winnie needs to spend more time with the sick animals, When I was there, the staff - not licensed vets - treated my animals. Dr W breezed in and out. I had to call several times to finally get test results ""off the record"" from the staff because the Dr. was to busy(lazy - uncaring) to call. In regards to another issue, I knew my cat got scratched by my other cat, and all I needed was and antibiotic, and trhey refused to help without seeing both animals at different appts. - $$$$$ - I to used Dr. Babick from 1984-2000, when I came back to Pgh from Florida in 2008, and returned to GVH - I was very disappointed. more

We would not recommend Greenfield Veterinary Hospital. 4/17/2012

Our dog went there for a few years just because of the proximity to our home, since she gets car sick. The office staff was hard to work with in getting medication ordered and getting our veterinary records to switch vets. We, many times, had to make requests three times before requests were resolved. The vets and vet staff were adequate. We did not feel like our dog was getting the best care by going there and working with the office staff ended up making the experience not worth it. There are many other vets that are better. We would strongly recommend East End Vet. more

Wonderful staff and care at GVH 3/9/2012

My mom and I have used Greenfield Veterinary Hospital for our many cats since I was a child and Dr. Babik was still independently practicing there. We met Dr. Winnie shortly after he started working at GVH when we had to have one of our beloved cats, Fleur, put to sleep, and he was incredibly kind, compassionate, and gentle with both her and my mom, who was devastated by her death. I like GVH 11/21/2011

I stumbled upon these reviews recently when I was looking up the number for GVH so I could make an appointment for my cat. Seriously...I don't understand why there are so many negative reviews against GVH on here. I've taken my cat there several times. She saw a different vet each time and every one of them was great. She most recently saw Dr. Winnie, who seems to have a bad rap from what I've read of the reviews on here. I don't understand why because I found him to be very patient, pleasant, knowledgeable, and informative. The vets at GVH were able to diagnose her food allergies, which several vets in the past at other veterinary clinics have missed. The treatments/new diet the vets there have prescribed have completely transformed my cat for the better. Their rates are very reasonable, and all the other staff are very friendly. Pros: null Cons: null more

MONEY is more important than your pet 6/15/2011

i have been a long time client of gvh (over ten years) and this last experience proved to me that loyalty earns you nothing! i will say they did take in my hannibal AFTER i was crying and sobbing on the phone woth them....however....they didnt look at him til the next day anyway. which was fine. i just wanted him there in case something went wrong thru the night. but instead of them offering that i bring him and drop him off as my first option jonathin gave me numbers of other places to take him. which i found out i should have. then after them charging 450 (which i wouldve paid regardless as we are talking about a family pet) i told them trhat i couldnt leave work again and had to keep hannibal there anothet night. after putting me on hold to actually ASK if that was ok - they added insult to injury and charged me another $40! as if my experience with practically having to beg them to look at him they needed that last $40 to top things off. after ten plus years of going there youd think that would help you out. NO money is more important. even after complaining i was not offered any type of resolution shown any interest to keep my business. when i just spent $2000 there in june they loved me. there are other hospitals in town. do not go to these money hungry mongrels more

Finding a new vet 4/14/2011

I have been taking my pets to Greenfield Veterinary Hospital for several years now, based upon a recommendation of an animal loving colleague (the proud owner of dogs, cats, birds, fish, and a horse). When I only had cats, I found the veterinary care to be satisfactory. My cats did not have any severe health problems and for yearly checkups and the occasional flea treatment, I had no complaints. However, a few years ago, I rescued a dog. She is an older dog and has multiple health problems. I have been severely dissapointed with the service I have received during the time that we have been treating her for her issues. There have been several instances of poor customer service - one time, we waited for 2.5 hours to be seen. After the dog was diagnosed with a health issue requiring a prescription diet, Dr Winnie disappeared and left me with the vet tech to discuss the course of treatment. The vet tech did not give me the proper instructions and a new set of health problems was created. I have been attempting to order her prescriptions online and the office has been remiss in responding to repeated inquiries to fax the prescription information to the company. As far as Dr Winnie is concerned, I run hot and cold with him. I find the way he speaks to me to be condescending and off putting at times, however, I am consistently pleased with his gentle and caring demeanor toward animals. I find their prices to be reasonable and their hours and location to be convenient. I have continued to go to Greenfield Veterinary Hospital despite being moderately to severely dissatisfied with our most recent visits, but we are ready to take our business elsewhere. more

Dr. Winnie and his staff are top notch professionals! 2/24/2011

The review titled "I'm sorry" does not accurately reflect my experience in the ten years I have been taking pets, both cats and dogs, to Greenfield Veterinary Hospital. Dr. Winnie and his colleagues have always been absolutely professional, kind, courteous and generous with their time and have always been more than reasonable any time finances were a concern. I own a pet business, and in my experience, a person's opinion of any one vet often depends on whether or not the patient had a "happy outcome", and has nothing to do with the capabilities of the vet, which in Dr. Winnie's case are truly numerous. Personally, I am loyal to Greenfield Veterinary Hospital and it is always the first call I will make when one of my pets is sick. more

Im Sorry 2/7/2011

I am the owner of a 8 month old cat and have been searching for the best place to take my little man. I have heard both good and bad things about Greenfield and decided to look into reviews myself. After seing both Yahudits post (which maybe blown out of proportion or not) I found myself asstonished by the replay of Greenfield Vet Hospital itself. Regardless of what actually happend between the hospital and the client I find this extremely unprofessional for a buisness to belittle someone and speak about the situaiton openly online. If this hospital goes to this exstent I can not conciously bring myself to my pet or my money to an establishment that would bring themselves to this level. Thanks for the warning a head of time. more

worse than the worst vet I have ever come in contact with 1/6/2011

Dr. Winnie and his staff are, for lack of a better term, THE ABSOLUTE WORST, LEAST COMPETENT PEOPLE I HAVE EVER COME ACROSS AND I HAVE HAD MANY, MANY ANIMALS OVER 59 YEARS. Dr. Winnie is arrogant, has no empathy for dogs or people(I do not have any idea how he treats cats or other animals). Speakling as a chair of a university graduate department, I wonder what vet school let this one graduate???? If you want your dog to get no treatment or even worse, the wrong treatment and if you want to be overcharged up the wazoo, this is the guy for you. i have absolutely no quams about stating strongly, DO NOT TAKE YOUR ANIMAL TO GREENFIELD VET HOSPITAL. I TOO GAVE ONE STAR IN ORDER TO PUBLISH THIS. IF I COULD, I WOULD HAVE GIVEN -5 STARS. more

The worst Vet ever 11/15/2010

If you want a real Dr. who cares don't go to Greenfield. I gave them several chances. it seems Dr. Winnie does not even care for dogs. I had just taken a rescue with not much notice. the Dr. rolled his eyes at me several times when I asked very basic questions about how much/what to feed, etc. He could not get out of the room fast enough. Went back the next day for more issues. Dr told me she was fine. Ended up at Point Brezze Vet the following day where they treated her issues(after 2 appts at Greenfield) and spent time with me answering questions. DO NOT WASTE YOUR TIME,MONEY OR YOUR PET'S HEALTH. only gave a star cause review won't go without a rating more

STAY AWAY 11/11/2010

Stay away - 15 hundred dollars for a tooth surgury that my dog never came home alive from . Then got no explanation on what realy happened just a phone call saying it would be 3500 more to fix my dog . I will never step a foot in greenfield vet again and i suggest you dont . more

Dr. Ruiz is AWESOME!!! 6/18/2010

My cat was started behaving differently about a week ago. He was constantly attacking his tail, biting at his paws, and skin was twitching. I took him to my parents vet (up in Slippery Rock), and he said that it was a seizure and prescribed Phenobarbital, even though he never actually had a full blown seizure. My cat was on it for about a week and I decided to get a second opinion. Dr. Ruiz listened to all my concerns and gave my cat a thorough physical examination. She said that his symptoms sounded neurological (something my own research was suggesting) and she gave me a referral. I really appreciated that seemed genuine in her concern, and she was never dismissive. Pros: Dr.Ruiz, Care Credit Cons: nothing that I saw. more

Owner Message
  • Greenfield Veterinary Hospital opened its doors in 1979. The owner, Frank Babik, VMD operated as a solo practitioner at this location until Sean Winnie, DVM joined the practice in 2001. In 2006 when Dr. Babik decided to reduce the number of hours he wished to practice, Dr. Winnie took over as medical director. Dr. Babik officially retired in November 2008. Since 2006 the hospital has undergone a series of upgrades and changes to serve the needs of our clients better. New radiographic equipment for more expedient and improved radiographic quality were acquired in 2007. An endoscope to assist animals with chronic ear infections was also purchased in 2007. In 2011 we purchased the Abaxis HM5 Complete Blood Count (CBC) and the VS2 Chemistry Analyzer to provide rapid in-house blood analysis for critical and urgent cases to better treat those patients. We are modernizing our facility with a veterinary software management program for invoicing, vaccine tracking, record keeping, inventory and billing/payments. Although transitioning from a completely paper based practice to a paperless practice is far from complete, we are making major strides in reaching that ultimate goal. Our recycling and environmental goals are set for the future and achievable in the next couple of years. There will also be some structural changes to the building forthcoming at the end of 2012 beginning of 2013 that should help accommodate more patients and provide better service for our existing clients as well as the new clients that join the GVH family every day.. We perform all general surgery (spays, neuters and declaws),oral health assessment and cleanings, dental surgeries, mass removal, total ear canal ablations, enucleations, abdominal exploratories, anal gland abscesses, toe amputation, tail docks and dew claw removals on puppies, splenectomy, biopsies, limb amputation and more. We also offer ultrasound by a board certified internal medicine specialist who will come on-site to perform the procedure. We work exclusively with Antech laboratories for all our outside lab work.

    · Local veterinary hospital servicing the community for over 30 years.

    · We are familiar with your pet and your pets needs.

    · In-house laboratory to check internal organ function preoperatively to insure pet is healthy enough for anesthesia.

    · All surgeries over the age of 7 are placed on IV fluids to stabilize blood pressure during all anesthetic procedures.

    · All declaws remain hospitalized for 2 days so that pain can be managed with appropriate pain medication.

    · Pets hospitalized overnight are monitored by capable staff members.
