Nicollet Village Video is now Filmzilla 1/18/2011

Nicollet Village Video moved & changed their name. They are in the Seward neighborhood: Filmzilla 2701 East Franklin Ave mpls 55406 They area open noon to midnight every bloomin' day of the year. You can't say you love movies if you don't have a membership here. There is no other movie rental place in Minneapolis. They have tens of thousands of rentals, and will try to find and buy anything they don't have. Filmzilla specializes in rare, independent and art-house films. Filmzilla rents movies. They don't rent games, they don't rent DVD machines, they don't buy your used DVD's. They do one thing, and are the best at what they do. They have won City Pages best video store of the year several times. And should. The customer service? They do what they can. Overheard: Clerk: ""I don't do customer service. I help people. That requires a little effort on your part."" (As a server putting myself through college, I laughed loud and long at that one.) The clerks are clearly overworked. It is a small indy business, and a meager staff is required to keep the place open. It's not an easy job, despite what people think. Filmzilla's help and know-how is something netflix will never provide. At that is from the clerks. If you want the widest selection of rare or hard to find, independent, foreign, documentary, avant garde, anime, or b-movies, get a free membership and get the best deal in movie prices and selection anywhere. My netflix account is now CLOSED. I don't like the corporate monopoly netflix is developing into. If you want the best, most extensive, inexpensive, coolest movie rental store in the 7 state area, go to FILMZILLA. If you want your butt kissed, go back to your plush suburb, hire a therapist or get an escort. more

The Banality of Evil 6/1/2009

Nicollet Village Video's staff isn't even that bad--most are just kind of bored and listless, providing the sort of flat customer service one expects at a video store. The owner is very gregarious and loves to bs about movies. But then there's that one guy--you must know the one--the ponce. He's there all the time, and I've come to feel that his attitude toward customers extends far beyond the boundaries of mere boredom or annoyance, and into the seething fires of absolute hatred. Even the simplest transaction with him is a study in pathological passive aggression, and god forbid you have some kind of issue or ask a question about a movie. Avoid the ponce and you're golden. Pros: Good selection Cons: That one guy--the ponce. more

Welcome to the jungle... 5/14/2009

Surly, unsocialized staff lack rudimentary customer service skills. Pros: Titles you wont find anywhere else; large adult section. Cons: Impolite staff; iffy quality of media. more

It's Like Being Urinated On Every Time You Rent! 3/18/2009

Sure Nicollet Village Video is cheap. And sure they have a large and varied DVD selection. Pros: Great selection, great prices Cons: Rude staff more

The WORST service ever! 1/15/2009

I've been going here for years, and I've never gotten a greeting or a thank you. Pros: near uptown Cons: Been mugged on that street, car's been broken into in that lot, bad service, discs never play right, etc more

Great selection!! 10/6/2008

I just read thru all the previous reviews of Nicollet Video, some going back 5 years and I totally disagree with the cons mentioned. It was my first time there and I was blown away by the awesome selection and number of vids/cds available. It was like a candy store of videos. I found the man who waited on me to be very friendly and helpful. I must admit that the 2 rotties behind the counter did make me step back a bit when I first saw them, but fell in love with them when one put his paws up on the counter and wanted a scratch. I will definitely be back!!! Pros: Huge selection, great prices, friendly rotties and service Cons: Location more

Wonderful all around 3/23/2008

I've been renting from Nicollet Village for almost 6 years now and have NEVER had a bad experience. The staff may be a little crabby at times, but I'm crabby ALL the time (mostly at people that complain about Nicollet Village) so we all get along very well. I have rented a couple DVD's that did not play in my DVD player, but they replaced them with no hassle because I am not a demanding customer who always thinks I am right. I always find what I am looking for in there. Whether it's Japanese Horror/Torture movies, or ""Relations"" and the City. As far as the drop box goes.....makes perfect sense to me why they do not allow it's usage during business hours. Because it's a pain in the ""rear end"" to have to clean those things out every 5 minutes, and it's the lazy american's excuse to not get out of their cars. It is quite possible, as well, that it could be for security purposes. You know, DVD's are expensive, and 16th and Nicollet isn't the best neighborhood around. Pros: Great selection, 4 for 5, great selection, great selection. Cons: No licorice. more

Oh Village Video, why can't you just stop sucking? 1/13/2008

Village Video is so tempting; it's nearby, indi, and at first glance, the selection and rental prices look fantastic. As other reviewers have already said, though, VV falls short in a big way. Their discs are often in poor condition- scratched or overplayed. Their files on members are disorganized and inaccurate, and the staff live up to their reputation as the worst service in Minneapolis. The fact that they disallow drop box use during daytime hours is inconvenient, and they're notorious for towing their own customers from the lot! Pros: right in the neighborhood, 4 for $5 sounds good, surly staff are usually hot Cons: enthusiastic towing of customers from lot, poor service, deffective DVDs, lots of fees more

The best there is... 7/19/2007

Seriously. Pros: Insane selection, great prices, no fake b.s. Cons: no candy or soda for sale more

Avoid it like the Plague.... 2/27/2007

Nicollet Village Video: No Customer service to speak of.. Pros: Nearby my home Cons: Customer service non-existing more

nicollet village video 2/24/2007

customer service stinks! it's crappy, frustrating and makes you not want to rent there, a lot of movies skip and they don't belive it when it happens on your system and not theirs. they always act like they are doing you a favor by taking your money. those dogs r not well trained. they make the place stink. the guy who helps you with a mouth full of tobacco is just nasty. take that stuff out of your mouth before you talk to customers. they do have a lot of hard to find titles plus a lot of vhs titles, but it does'nt make up for the very very very poor customer service. if you can handle crappy service go ahead and go 4 4 5 can't beat it. Pros: titles price Cons: customer service customer service customer service customer service more

Thank you, sirs, may I have another? 2/12/2007

I'm not the type of person that likes my butt kissed in a fake customer servicey way, but trying to get videos from this place ruins my night every time. There are signs plastered everywhere which tell you WHAT NOT TO DO!!!! OVER AND OVER!!! AS IF YOU ARE STUPID AND/OR DOING WHATEVER IT IS JUST TO INFURIATE THEM !!!! The post by Nicollet Village Video pretty much sums up how much they feel about their customers. Nobody's making you work in customer service, you guys. And being a professional dom probably pays better. Pros: It's better than some chain store. Cons: You will feel like crying when you leave. more

Four movies for four days for $5. 7/27/2006

Mr. ""Refund!"" (deliberate Breaking Away reference), shows up claiming Nausicca and Constantine were both defective and saying that he should get his money back. Pros: Free Parking, 70, 000 titles Cons: No free food more

Terrible customer service 7/9/2006

I rented a couple DVDs and both of them were damaged, i.e. my DVD player skipped and I could not watch them in peace. When I brought them back to ask for a refund, I got an argument, and an explanation of how my DVD player sucked. That was my first rental with a new membership. Never again! Pros: Selection, hard-to-find titles Cons: Customer service, customer service, customer service. more

great selection! 6/8/2005

This is one of the best video store selections I've ever seen. They have tons of new releases, but they're not the ones you find in blockbuster, and they generally only have one or two coppies of any given movie. So don't go here for the latest big budget hollywood movie. Instead, find pretty much any kung fu movie released in the US, find tons and tons of independent films, find something new, find something you wouldn't have otherwise seen. Oh yeah, and it's hard to beat their 4 movies for $5 on non-new-releases. more

selection stinks 2/28/2003

New releases are ALWAYS out, NO DVD'S!!!! Be careful when you return videos. TWICE I've been hounded for weeks to return videos I RETURNED ON TIME!!!!!!! Cons: NO DVD!!!!!!!! more
