Best

Hands down best Indian food in Seattle is Cedars on Brooklyn Restaurant. It is crowded ('cause we love it), but the servers don't smash into you either. Long wait times are made ...

Worst

The Good (appetizers): The vegetable delite appetizer (samosa, pakora & deep fried paneer) was quite good as was the naan (large pieces baked just right in the tandoor over) T...

really really REALLY rude manager 2/16/2006

At our visit, a nice couple seated next to us who ordered 15 minutes after we did received their meal and their check and LEFT before we ever got our meal. The waitress, from a distance, shouted ""You don't have food yet?"" ""No."" When we got our food, I assumed they would take some Nan off our bill to accommodate the 90 minute wait. They didnt, so I complained. The manager, looking annoyed, said the couple next to us could have ordered on the deck while waiting to be seated. When we explained to us that not only did we watch them order, they even joked with us about how long our meal was taking, and that regardless, we waited 90 minutes. She said if I wasn't happy that I should leave, call the owner and that, ""my father would be more than happy to speak with you."" Pros: bus staff Cons: waitstaff, management more

Eat and Go Away!!! 2/9/2006

This used to have good food, but the quality has declined rapidly. This is THE WORST place to go for a relaxing meal near UW. The servers and owner hover over your table, grabbing plates as soon as they're empty and bringing the bill as soon as the last plate is gone -- then hovering some more until it's paid and you leave. It could be helpful if you have small children, but it's annoying if you want to enjoy the meal on a date. It used to be that the food was good enough quality to put up with the rushed service, but no longer. To some that's great service - to me it's rude. We switched to getting take out to avoid the wait staff and owner, but after 2 errors on two take out meals, we will never return to this establishment. Pros: 2for1 coupons Cons: rushed, bad food, won't listen more

good but not spectacular indian food 2/3/2006

Good Indian food. Inconsistent service and long waits for lunch at weekends. One of the better Indian restaurants in the University district but not world class by any means. more

Best Indian Food, Hands Down. 1/22/2006

Service is ""unique"" but the food is worth it. If you don't like this style of service, get take out. . . Pros: heavenly Chai, tikka masala, pesto naan Cons: parking sucks, noisy more

Order To Go 12/30/2005

I am so baffled by some of the reviews on this site...mostly complaints about the service. If you enjoy the food...which I do, I suggest ordering to go and enjoying it in the comfort of your home where you don't have to ""put up"" with non-Western approaches to service and hospitality. more

great indian food 12/26/2005

A few years ago I asked the owner of the Souk at Pike Place Market where he takes his family to eat Indian food. He said ""Cedars on Brooklyn"". I have traveled over the world and cook many varieties of world cuisine at home. Cedars rates near or at the top as far as indian cuisine goes. Yes it is a busy atmosphere. Yes they have a lot of wait staff but hey I like that. The owner is VERY friendly and appreciative of your patronage. I love Cedars and have been going there for years. In India there are lot's of people so a busy atmosphere is usual. The curries are excellent. I make a lot at home so I have some experience. The naan is excellent as well as the Chai tea. I love this place. Pros: curries, naan, service Cons: parking more

A bit disappointing 10/5/2005

Cedar's is always packed, and it gets a lot of good reviews. I've eaten there twice, and have been a bit disappointed. Compared to most other Indian food in the area, it isn't nearly as flavorful. Indian cuisine is my favorite kind of food, and I would not recommend Cedar's. The service and ambiance are also pretty bad. The service was quite slow, and the restaurant is too loud to have pleasant conversations. Pros: Selection Cons: Food, Service more

Good Food, poor service 10/3/2005

I went with a group of co-workers and the food was good enough, but about 4 of us ordered the same thing with varying degrees of spicy-ness, and they messed up on the number or milds/mediums and wouldn't fix their mistake. Later, a waitress bumped into me from behind and spilled a green sauce down my back but didn't say anything and no one noticed until we were leaving. RUDE RUDE RUDE. The food was decent, but not worth it. Pros: decent food Cons: rude staff, crowded more

Now I see why everyone loves it 6/24/2005

This great Indian restaurant is abound with options for meat eaters and vegetarians alike. It features an interesting menu that expands beyond the usual Indian faire. While I wish they offered a lunch buffet, our recent weekday meal included a sumptuous Paneer Naan that was to die for and an awesome Mango Curry. The Chai is also quite excellent, not too sweet like they make it in most places. If the whether is nice, it's definitely worth the visit. Pros: Great selection, Cheap prices, Parking Cons: Often crowded, Noisy, No lunch buffet more

have never been treated so rudely 6/23/2005

I had heard that the food here is really good so I called to arrange catering for an event and was _completely_ shocked by how rude the employee was to me. I have arranged catering for several events and have NEVER had such a negative experience. The host who I spoke to on the phone was confrontational, insulting, rude, condescending, and downright obnoxious. I have to say the experience was rather surreal as his reaction was absolutely unwarranted and seem to come out of nowhere. I was so flabbergasted at his reaction to my catering inquiry. So I checked the reviews here on city search and found a common theme: great good, AWFUL customer service. I can't comment on the food, but will say the customer service is utterly appalling. Cons: rude employees, awful customer servic more

The Tandori Nazi 2/12/2005

I love that Cedars is a tradition in the U district and that they have such delicious food. However, the service sucks! Although there are plenty of waitpersons around and they are attentive, one sees a significant turnover. Don't mind the constant refills of perhaps the best chai in the city. Do mind when they decide you've had enough condiments (for which you paid a surcharge) and take them away when you're less than half way through your meal. (If you want to CONTROL the amounts, dole them out!) I don't think it's the wait personnel that is small, petty and controlling. They try to push their customers around. God knows what it's like to be their staff! I feel sorry for the wait personnel caught in the middle. Their food is not cheap! Why do they cut corners with their customers? I'll never go back again. Pros: Historical, Seinfieldesque, Food Cons: Service, Attitude, Cost more

Watch out--BAD service! 2/9/2005

My friends and I went on a Saturday night, and understandably, it was a busy night. However, every single person we encountered was completely rude and acted as if we were a huge burden! The waitresses/hostesses barely acknowledged us, we waited 45 minutes for a table, 30 minutes for our food, and we were lucky if any of the staff even walked by our table with water! The only people who ever came (after we received the food) tried to take our plates before we were even done eating! They didn't even ask if we were finished! The only thing that was done quickly was getting the check--big surprise. They want to rush people in and out of here so badly that they don't even care that they're providing crappy service! more

Rushed 2/5/2005

I've read several reviews of this restaurant, so I thought I'd go there and try it out for myself. I have to say that I agree with those that felt rushed when they were eating. And yes, the food may have been okay, but I felt pressured to get out of there. They were grossly overstaffed and it actually got downright annoying when they would fill my water glass after every sip. So, I agree that if you like a waiter coming to your table every 30 seconds, then by all means, eat here. It all depends on what you consider good or bad service. Pros: parking Cons: felt rushed more

Best Indian in Seattle 1/30/2005

Most of the reviewers here are fairly correct in their assesment of this restaurant, though here's the problem: What one sees as ""bad"" service others see as good. Here's the bottom line: if you want pretty much the best Indian food in Seattle (I've eaten at serveral, and usually default to this one, since it's the best quality and price) and it's fast. If you want a good, quick meal this is it. Please keep in mind, yes, the waiters hover and may try to restle away your plate before you're quite done, but really this place is so packed, you're glad they do so that you can get seated and enjoy your meal. Pros: Good prices, Good Food, Adequit parking more

Amazing Food and Service! 12/3/2004

I have never recieved better service in this entire city!!! My sister and I sat outside last night under one of the heaters. The staff always kept all our drinks full - which is amazing since we drink about a gallon of fluids (6 different glasses) btwn us 2. We liked that each waitperson had their own speciality to check us: the order guy, the drink guy, the food from the kitchen girl, etc. It really felt like a team effort and always made sure everything was fine and good. Maybe I am just used to the crappy service I get at other restaurnats in Seattle, but they ruled. Oh yeah - their food was as good as their service - Bring on the Spinach Nan!!! Pros: Outside heated patio, validated parking, endless heavenly chai more

Ruined by awful service 10/10/2004

Cedars' take on Indian and Mediterranean food is excellent, but the service absolutely ruined the experience for me, my wife, and my mother. The man who took our order (not waitstaff, perhaps the owner's son) was rude and dismissive of our questions. The food came in no time, which was good, but before we were even done they were trying to clear the plates and wiping down the table with a nasty bleach-soaked sponge. I understand the need to turn tables, but pushing customers out before they're even finished is a good way to guarantee they won't be back. We won't. Pros: Good food, Quick kitchen Cons: , Felt pushed out, Awful parking more

THE BEST INDIAN FOOD!!! 9/25/2004

I was shocked at first to see that Cedars doesn't head up the overall category (9.2 out of 10.0?), but then noticed that it DOES head up the specialty ""Indian Food"" category (10 out of 10). Having read the reviews, I understand why: many have complained about the unconventional service there and claim to have been rushed. I have never felt rushed at Cedars. I've probably been there 20+ times. I've also eaten Indian food all over the states---all over the world in fact. Cedars is hands-down some of the best Indian food out there. Although they have a 'different' approach to service, they are always respectful, polite, and right there for you to refill your water. more

Best Indian food in Seattle 8/28/2004

The best Indian food in Seattle and amongst the best Ive had in the States. The selection is large and the flavors come through well. Be picky about your beers though. Kingfisher and London Pilsner are great Indian beers. more

service 8/19/2004

We all can agree on the food, but the service seems to be an aquired taste. I disliked it at first, but after a couple repeat visits I began to find it enjoyable, because everything is full and the tables are kept clean. The waitstaff might not blend in to the backround, but they are helpful. Which is surprising after I found out that they dont recieve any tips. They must be paid in curry or something because that doesnt keep them from working hard, even if sometimes its a little too hard. Also the parking is aweful more

FAST EATING REQUIRED 3/9/2004

I ate at Cedars for the 3rd time last night and never truly noticed how the (browbeaten?) and grossly overstaffed (3-4 per table) waitstaff hovers. At first it seems like they are just efficient, but then it starts to feel harrassing. When one of the bussers started to wipe down our table WHILE we were still sitting at it, waiting for our bill, that was it for me. The food is very good, but to enjoy this place I would suggest you eat like you're in a BIG HURRY and don't expect warmth. Pros: good food, parking, nice music Cons: Unfriendly staff, No lingering allowed, a bit pricey more
