Some french influence -- Nice decor 8/19/2007

Went there with a friend recently for a late dinner. We were sat promptly thanks to our reservation from the W concierge. From what we ordered, the foie gras was alright but not interesting. The crab cake was certainly a nicer appetizer to my taste. The steak (Rib Eye of course) was quite good. My favorite part of the dinner was probably the Sorbet. The service was very nice and I would recommend the place for that. They were discreet and very efficient. Best, -Guy Pros: Service, Location, Sorbet, Ribeye Cons: Fatty fish, Foie gras more

good food and service overall 7/27/2007

came here for restaurant week and the place is fantastic looking. we decided to order outside the restuarant week menu because we werent thrilled with the choices it had to offer. we started off with the crabcakes which was full of flavor and had the right texture. i had the sea bass which was cooked perfectly and my date had the halibut that had a perfect brownish crush cooked to perfection. our dessert was delicious as well which really topped off the meal at the end. the service was great as our waiter did not annoy us ever so often asking if everything was okay. Pros: Service, food Cons: a bit noisy more

cold decor but I warmed up to the menu 7/17/2007

This room looks like a TV game show set. It's very modern, very lit, very glass/plastic. They have a good menu. We liked the fois gras a lot, and the fries are excellent. Pros: fries Cons: decor more

Becoming an old friend 4/17/2007

On our second trip (of many, we hope) from London to NY we wanted somewhere chilled, attractive and undemanding near our hotel in the East 50s, for that first night, when our bodies were telling us that 8pm in NY was actually 1am in London! Brasserie gave us great food and wine with attentive service, so did it for us with room to spare. (See my separate, less flattering, review of nearby Montparnasse, where the host just ignored us.) For wine I recommend their chilled white Macon Villages, whilst the house steaks were well done, just as we love them! Service was attentive, but not intrusive. Fully-priced, but hey, live a little! Pros: Food, atmosphere, lighting Cons: Bit pricey more

Brasserie is new again 4/16/2007

Brasserie is new again. I loved it. What a meal. That halibut melted in my mouth and the foie gras was great too. I had the strawberry dessert. It was amazing. What a new experience. I hadn't been in over 4 years, but my friend said I had to go back and so I did. I cannot wait to have another meal at my new old favorite restaurant. more

Not Your Father's Cafeteria 3/31/2007

The interior design of Brasserie is a bit like a school cafeteria from the Jetsons cartoons. It is large, bright with all hard surfaces which means the noise level is always cranked up. What fills the room is the quality food prepared by a talented kitchen. The limited menu has a wide variety of choices. And all are fantatisc. The service is uneven and can disappoint. more

Nothing noteworthy except the desserts 2/12/2007

With so many other restaurants in the city, I would have no reason to return to Brasserie. I did not care for the decor/ambiance at all. It had a sort of futuristic/spaceship feel, but then had a ""walkway"" of sorts down into the restaurant. I guess the walkway is supposed to ""hip"" or something. And the restaurant is at first sort of hidden from view when you first enter. The coatcheck has no tables or chairs in the area, so when you are handed your coat, sweater, scarf, and then you have your pocketbook, you have no choice but to throw your stuff on the floor as you can't possibly put all your stuff on AND hold your bags/pocketbook at the same time. Not very good planning on their part. more

Not very good planning on their part. The bathrooms and the stairs to it were not particularly nice. I got the cauliflower/leek soup. I did not taste any leeks. Overall, the soup was extremely average, like something I'd pick up for lunch somewhere near my office. I also got the lamb shank with beans. While very tasty, the dish was too "heavy". They should have accented the heavy lamb with something that would help to "cut" the heaviness of it....perhaps some lemon peel... It was just too heavy a dish. I tried some of my sister's tuna tartare (or something like that). I've had better. The only thing I can say is that the desserts were excellent. I consider myself a real dessert connoisseur, and the dessert chef at this place was excellent. I tried my sister's 3-chocolate sampler or whatever, and my mom's chevre cheesecake with fig. Both were excellent. But I would never go back here. more

Great food in a fun, funky atmosphere! 1/23/2007

I went here on Friday night. The place is really nice. My friends and I shared a bunch of appetizers and it was great. The mussels were unbelievable. The cheese plate was perfection. The chocolate desserts were so amazing, I wish I didn't have to share them! more

This was a great night out, I look forward to going back! more
