Best

New ownership recently took over and have kept the same food and atmosphere, but the wine list is dramatically improved. Great selection of Calfornia wines in addition to the Span...

Worst

Very small portions. The food looks good but taste flavorless. Pros: Apealling menu of Morrocan Food Cons: Very small portions, Overpriced

delicious 5/4/2006

i invited my girlfriend there for her birthday and we had a great time! their menu had changed a bit form the last time i came, so here s what we tried and i think you should have! the sweet pea flan ( such a unique taste!), the crab cake and the famous spanish fries!!! the monkfish with proscuitto is a must. and their desserts rock: try the chocolate and the panna cotta. will definitely come back. Pros: food, food, not overpriced more

very average food! 4/12/2006

nice ambience and location, but the food is very mediocre and overpriced! more

Disappointing... 2/3/2006

So much critical acclaim, yet nothing to write home about...so here I am on CS. Let's get it clear though, the service I received was top notch. If I were putting together a restaurant, I'd hire the young french lady in a second. But she's not the chef and maybe that's where she's needed. The goat cheese app was solid, probably the one notable item I tried. But the chicken tagine was bland (and incredibly overpriced for a very small plate -- $16, I believe), the couscous est tres generic and after giving us warm bread to start, they followed up w/ a few cold, hard, tasteless variations. Kudos to their marketing...they're gonna need it. Pros: service Cons: portions, food more

A great spot! 1/12/2006

Potrero Hill was the neighborhood my date was taking me to, I was not so sure since it is not exactly the hood known for the best eats, how wrong was I. Great ambience, service and food. Then again, I wanted to eat my date as well, but really a great restaraunt. Pros: decor, menu, service Cons: noise level more

Now that's what we're talking about! 12/13/2005

Wow! Ive been disappointed with the talk-of-town-restaurants, but this did not disppoint. We went there for our group Xmas party and there was 9 of us. We tried a wide variety including goat cheese, stuffed dates, prawns ceviche, lamb tartare, foie gras, meatballs, monkfish, lamb tagine, and lamb kabab. All were great and I recommend picking more small plates rather than the large platesand note I put the items in order of preference. Dessert was also great, but if go with a small group, will probably be too full to try them. We were served by the owner of the restaurant so of course he was knowledgeable and provided good service. Overall, I had a great time and the atmosphere made our party very fun! Definitely worth a trybut go with a bigger group so you can try more! Pros: Excellent food, Tapas, Fun Ambiance Cons: Small, Can be noisy more

Delicious Appetizers, Mediocre Entrees 11/7/2005

I highly recommend the Goat Cheese Appetizer, as well as the Meatball Appetizer. The Lamb Tagine and Chicken Tagine were good, but not great. I enjoyed the atmosphere; the restaurant is well lit, but sitting near the door is unusually drafty. The service was satisfactory. Pros: Appetizers, Romantic Cons: Crowding, Entrees more

I had a great time 9/15/2005

I stopped by last week end , we didn t have a reservation but the host sat us quite promptly. we decided to have a family style dinner and ended up sharing plates: the tartare, meatballs, goat cheese ( a must have for cheese lovers!)....,and then we shared the paella( with clams and mussels). we were too full for dessert, but they all seem appealing! definitely had a great time with my friends and food is really incredible!! will spread the word! Pros: food, service, ambiance more

Regal Red Warm Nook for a Divine Night 9/13/2005

Of all the places in the world with delightful-- not just great-- service, this place is it. The staff were really attentive although not suffocatingly hovering. Wine is delicious and varied, meals of cous cous and lamb top notch, and the deep red decor makes this place a lovely place to sink into for an evening of enchanting conversation. Pros: Service, Ambiance, Food more

It misses in some things 8/31/2005

My boyfriend and I had dinner at Baraka recently, and we had a mixed experience. In terms of the food, the small plates were heavenly (try the pea flan), but the paella and lamb were overpowered with seasoning. My boyfriend ordered the most expensive glass of wine in their menu, and it was barely drinkable. After returning it, the wait staff was very apologetic and gave us free desert and wine. While the food was mediocre, the service was exceptional. more

Exquisite food and service 7/30/2005

This is a wonderful place to sample very distinct flavors. I would recommend ordering several small plates. For two people, we were more than satisfied by the lamb tartare and foie gras, fava salad and pistachio-encrusted goat cheese with flatbread, and stuffed dates. Every one of the five dishes was a winner. The restaurant is much smaller than its website might lead you to think - it's not quite the place for a romantic experience, but the decor inside is sumptuous and wonderful. The service is excellent (don't be fooled by the Francophobes). Our only complaint was the music; just because there is a Moroccan cover of the Eagles' ""Hotel California"" doesn't make the song any more tolerable. Pros: Food (esp foie gras!), Cocktails, Service Cons: Music (small problem), Small, crowded space more

Fantastic! 5/28/2005

Don't know what are all the fusses about. Everything was great with us. We had to waited about 5-10 minutes, but other than that it was great. Food was superb, service was casual and friendly (yet professional), manager came to check a few times. Overall, I loved it! Will be back! Pros: Great food, Services, Prices Cons: Noise level, Small space more

A little disappointed 5/17/2005

My wife and I had been wanting to try this place for a while, and finally had the opportunity to do so recently. We had a reservation (mid week), and were seated right away. The decor and atmosphere are great, and the service was very attentive. Despite this, I can't go so far as to recommend it. Overall I found the food to be just ok - rather bland, very small portions and a few bucks per plate overpriced. I also had a glass of Sancerre, which was nowhere near chilled enough - unacceptable for $10.50/glass. For dessert, the Nougat mousse de Montelimar was outstanding. While it wasnt a negative experience by any means, I guess I was just expecting a little more. You can definitely do better in terms of food and value, IMHO. Pros: atmosphere, service Cons: bland food, overpriced more

Happy Neighbourgs 3/24/2005

My wife and i just move on portrero hill. I just want to say that we have been very suprised about the choices we have to dine on 18th street. We already dine at baraka two times and we always had a good time. The food is very creative and the staff friendly. The dates and the goat cheese are incredible. This small restaurant gets very busy on rush hours but if you go there early or late it's always a must if you don't like to make reservations like us. We are more than happy to have moved to this part of the city. Pros: food, service, friendly more

terrible service 3/22/2005

We had to wait a full hour after our reservation to get seated. We were finally seated after we threatened to leave. The food was below average and over priced. I would not recommend this place. Considering there are so many good restaurants in the immediate vicinity you would be better off going somewhere else. more

Unbelievably good food! 3/11/2005

I've been here several times, and I don't think there was a single thing anyone at the table ever ate here that was anything less than fantastic (can't vouch for the shellfish, since I didn't sample that). ABSOLUTE MUST(S): the pistachio crusted goat cheese appetizer, the stuffed dates appetizer, the meatballs, the tagines, the slow braised beef short rib, and the seared ahi tuna (was hard to stop short of listing the whole menu). Unfortunately, as with all popular restaurants during peak dinner hours, one has to wait a while even if one has a reservation. Pros: excellent food, attentive service Cons: long wait despite res more

Wonderful food; service was fine. 11/1/2004

Reading the prior reviews, I don't get it: ""small plates"" indicates ""small servings."" Right? And to be honest, the small plates had more than enough food on them! Good grief, must everything in this country be super-sized?! But to the food. I had dinner here twice in less than a week (completely by accident). So, I've had just about all of the small plates and enjoyed everyone of them. Especially the stuffed dates (something I generally don't like), the goat cheese with honey (superb!), the lamb tartare (which was outstanding) and the Moroccan meatballs (which were fantastic). I favored the small plates over the big plates (the steak wasn't interesting, but the rack of lamb was better, but only slightly). Service was fine and both times I lucked out with the window tables. Otherwise, it's a tight fit. Pros: Food, Service more

Expectionnal experience! 8/26/2004

I had dinner few nights ago for the first time at Baraka and just wanted to share the wonderful time I had there with my friends. We did not have reservation, but even though the place was crowded the manager seat us within 20 minutes and offered us olives while waiting for our table. Once seated, the waitress came promptly and gave us recommendations on the menu. The flavors were amazing, matching the decor and the staff. I would recommend this jewel of Potrero Hill to anyone who wants to spend a great evening! Pros: service, food, atmosphere more

Evil Hostess! 8/24/2004

This is how a good place goes bad. The hostess was so rude to us we almost left before sitting down. After looking at the menu we asked the hostess how many small plates she suggested for five adults and she told us 3 to 4 dishes each. We ended up with enough food for 20 people. She tried the same thing with the wine stearing us to the most expensive bottle on the list. We skipped that but she showed her true colors. I would not go back. Pros: atmosphere, good looking crowd Cons: , rude hostess, crowded/loud more

great experience 8/2/2004

My party and I had a wonderful time at baraka. our waiter was very friendly and helpful. he recommanded us the ( amasing ) Goat cheese with onion jam and the squid ( very tender). my favorite entree was the seared tuna with fresh vegetables, and my husband the sirloin steak servec with socca fries ( a real delight for the palate). even full, we decided to go for a dessert, and ordered the beignets ( it comes with marmelade and yogurt); that was AMASING! we really had a great time and the excellent food helped us enjoy it more; this place definitely has great vibes. Pros: good service, amasing food, great vibes more

Underwhelming, bland 7/27/2004

I don't know which restaurant the Citysearch editors reviewed but it wasn't the Baraka I went to last night. The fava bean salad lacked zing and brightness, the soft shell crab was strangely flavorless and the accompanying aioli was sorely lacking any garlicky excitement. In contrast, the moroccan meatballs were almost overwhelmingly rich and gamy, so much so that I couldn't finish them. The chicken tagine with green olives had an unpleasant astrigent quality and lacked any depth of flavor. And the paltry four tablespoons of cous-cous provided was not even enough to eat the tagine with. An extra four tablespoons of cous-cous was a ridiculous $4.50. To top it off, the waiter didn't bring water until after the check arrived! Pros: nice decor Cons: , bland food, overpriced more
