Folks, my wife and I just visited Andina Peruvian restaurant after hearing/reading about much of the hype. Unfortunately, looking at the tail end of a $135 bill for a dinner for ...

Nice food, something different, but not as ""fantastico"" as expected 9/8/2008

In all honesty, was not as impressed as I expected to be based on other reviews. Food was unique and tasty, but not ""knock your socks off."" Service was good, but not amazing. Restaurant was very hot/humid, which made for some discomfort. Also, the space was a bit packed with tables, etc. Navigating from our table in the rear to the ladies' room during the peak of service was somewhat challenging. This was a nice experience, but I wouldn't put it on my 10-best. Pros: Something different, unique food prepared well Cons: Loud, hot, expensive more

Amazing 9/3/2008

I hate to recommend Andina....because I am selfish enough to want to keep it all to myself. Andina just keeps getting more popular as the word gets out about the food. It is Amazing!\r \r The Cocktails are fun and delicious too.\r \r The only downside is that the diningroom is jammed packed with tables. A little to crowded for my taste. But I keep comiong back inspite of the crowds to get my fix of Peruvian Tapas.\r \r I espcially like the tiny pepper filled with jamon and cheese. Please try it. It will not disappoint. more

Intense, Delectable Flavors, Warm Atmosphere, Great Service 9/3/2008

We had almost forgotten about Andina, busily checking out every new restaurant that comes down the pike, and we're so glad we rediscovered it! We went without a reservation on a Saturday night - what were we thinking? But the wait wasn't unbearably long, and we were checked on a couple of times, which was nice. Despite the business, we received stellar service. The sommalier was knowledgeable and our waiter attentive without being overbearing in any way. It is so nice and so rare these days to visit a restaurant run by professionals! \r \r And then there was the food. It was eclectic, original, delicious. Their vast selection never disappoints. The artistry involved in creating and executing this menu is apparent in every morsel. We fought over our appetizer of roasted pimento peppers stuffed with quinoa, cheese, and serrano ham, then each horded our intensely flavorful entrees - Lomo Saltado and Pollito Al Pisco con Toques Chorrillanos. Divine. \r \r We laughed that we had been unsure of where to have our wedding rehearsal dinner - we have now officially booked Andina, knowing that everyone will LOVE the food and the gorgeous, newly renovated space upstairs (formerly Apotheke). This place is awesome! Pros: Food, atmosphere, attentive service more

Great night out! 8/11/2008

My husband took me here for our Anniversary. Everything was fantastic. They had the best spanish style tortilla I have had. The Creme brulee Trio was delicious, the portions were surprising large and the presentation was great. We were seriously full off of 4 small tapas, desert and wine and the service was great. Pros: Food, Prices, Service Cons: Parking in the Pearl is always a bummer. more

Love it! 8/9/2008

I love this place. I love the small plates, sitting in the bar and enjoying creative healthy plates and conversing with friends over creative mixed drinks. My second FAV for small bites an cocktails is Portland CIty Grill. This is not a place for the commercial restaurant frequenter. The poor reviews below I cannot dispute or disagree because most of them are based on entrees which I have never had here. They have way too many creative appetizers to order and entree in my opinion and the bar is the place to be. Enjoy! Pros: Great Food, Great Atmosphere Cons: Nothing more

Worst service ever... 7/28/2008

As a resident of Portland, I've grown accustom to the cold, aloof nature of most service industry workers. So I wasn't expecting the staff at Andina to roll out the red carpet upon my arrival. However, I was not expecting to be treated like a second rate citizen. The Hostess seemed put out because we didn't have a reservation, and after shoving us off onto another Hostess, we were advised to sit at the bar until a table opened up. We enjoyed a drink, and then were offered a table where, after about 20 min of waiting, we had to ask for a dinner menu. Perhaps they assumed we didn't want to eat... Thank God we ordered two Tapas, because the food took close to an hour to make it to our table. We were not offered refills on our drinks at all. We declined a second bowl of bread, but received one anyways... all in all, the service left me feeling like I had done something wrong and was being punished. I've never left a review for a restaurant before, but considering the declining economy, I feel it is my duty to inform you that there are much better things to spend $50 on. \r \r In fact, try The Farm. Its top on my list of favorite restaurants :) more

deee-lish 7/12/2008

walking around, looking for a place to eat, and came to Andina which i didnt know anything about. we didnt have reservations so they seates us in the lower level, which was even better in my opinion. the servers were great, there was actually like 5 different people that would bring out different portions. the tastes of all things we ordered were all so different and amazing! definately going back :) more

You Gotta Go! 6/19/2008

Six first-timers at Andina on Tuesday . Sure glad we had reservations because the place was packed (good sign right there!). Our server was prompt with our drink orders while we were overwhelmed with the contents of the menu. It all looked so good. We decided on the Tapa portion of the menu instead of individual entres. We each chose a different item and our server adjusted the amount of the item (sm., med., lg.) to make sure we each had a portion. We also had a platter of asparagus to share. Each item we passed was so distinctly different from the other (no shared tastes). The food was fabulous. The accompanying sauces that were paired only enhanced the experience. \r We decided we would get a couple of deserts to share. While we were looking around at other table's desert deliveries, people were saying ""Get this"", ""No, get this"", ""No, this one!"". After choosing, again we were not disappointed. One was specially arranged with greetings because we were celebrating a birthday for one of our group. Very nice touch.\r Lastly, I want to convey what a great server we had. She was so right-on with recommendations regarding the food and she was so knowledgable about every item on the wine selections. Her translations of the menu items regarding tastes wanted us to order everything they offered!! \r We all spent the next morning in our hotel taking ""inventory"" of each Tapa we experienced. We shall definitely return (maybe even invite our hubbies!)......Ya-Ya's from Bend Pros: Attentive service (many people involved), great food, something for everyone, comfortable lighting, an itch to go back. Cons: Accoustics on the loud side. more

Best food and overall dinning experience in Portland consistently 6/10/2008

Andina is my favorite restaurant in Portland, has been for some time. I've tried every entree and the food is always fresh and amazing. The Scallops and Ahi are my favorites. If going with a big group it is fun to order a bunch of apps in various sizes. The option to order tapas in small, medium or large portions is great. If you need a place to bring an out of towner or client, this is the place to do it. If you like noise and people watching reserve a spot in the bar (just keep in mind you need 5 or more to reserve in the bar). Every night of the week they have a live Peruvian band. The family who owns Andina are wonderfully caring people, which comes through in their staff. Many employees are bi-lingual and extremely knowledgeable in Peruvian culture and food and actually take careful time to answer your questions. Make a reservation because they are full nightly, you will not be disappointed! Pros: live music in the bar, friendly/knowledgeable staff, lively ambience, fab food more

Excellent Peruvian Cuisine 6/9/2008

We went to Andina on a Saturday night. Our server, Alyssa, was amazing. She began by asking us if we had ever been there before and when we said no, she described each section of the menu, the key distinctions of each dish, and described the ones we asked about in great detail. The food was excellent, an amazing array of spices and flavors. There were typical American favorites all the way to Traditional rural Peruvian classics. I had the Lamb Shank dish (one of the traditional dishes) and would highly recommend it. One of the owners of the restaurant stopped by our table to make sure the meal was enjoyable. The atmosphere was a little noisy and the tables were crowded, but the service and the food more than makes up for it! Pros: Food, Service, Friendly Atmosphere Cons: Little pricey, noisy, crowded more

Very accommodating 4/25/2008

After hearing rave reviews from multiple people I decided that it was finally time to check Andina out. So for my 23rd birthday I sent out an email to friends informing them of my decision and to meet there at 6:30 on Wednesday. On the day of, my count jumped from 5 to 9 so I called to make some last minute reservations. They informed me they could only fit us in at 6pm or 8:30pm. The latter was too late so I choose 6 and frantically sent out texts to everyone. Despite my best efforts, I didn't even arrive until 6:15. I apologized for being late but they had no problem with it and had our table waiting for us. They were very accommodating, even hanging one of my girlfriends coats up for her. Another girlfriend showed up very late (7:15) and they simply gave her a menu and told her to take her time. Once she ordered they rushed her food right out to her. My meal was absolutely delicious (I had pork with butternut squash ravioli) but I was sad I couldn't try them all because they all looked mouth watering. My drink was to die for!! It was a caipirinha with acai berry puree on top. I will continue to go back time and time again (if for nothing more than that drink). I hear the happy hour in the bar is quite an experience as well! Great service and great food! Pros: Great service, great food! more

Go back every time im in Portland 4/4/2008

I live in LA now and I try to go back to Andina whenever I am visiting Portland. There are not many restaurants like it and it should be appreciated for its fine peruvian food!!!! THere is nothing better than 3 courses here... such a wide variety of foods and small plates. I haven't heard anyone mention the DELICIOUS BREAD AND SALSA (Mango, Jalepeno mint!! mmm) that comes out before the meal. I know most people are going low-carb these days but if you like a good bread before your meal you can't skip this place. \r I'll be back shortly!!! Cons: just a lil pricey more

The Way Neuvo-Anything Should Be 3/18/2008

Read mixed reviews. Asked a friend and Andina was recommended. Firstly, the environment and atmosphere are comfortable and inviting - even with the all the tables crammed in there. The interior design is nicely balanced. Service was spot on. Our server David was friendly and attentive. And many others get in on the service action, so you feel taken care of. There is zero pretense to the place. The menu is dope. Excellent variety of very cool Peruvian dishes. Small-Medium-Large-plate tapas. All excellent in taste and design. Great flavors - nice play on sweet and spice. Nice mix of fresh ingredients. Nothing over-wrought. The drinks and entrees are the same - all excellent in design, execution, quality and flavor. I'd go back just for the cool drinks. This is my kind of place. Cool environment, not too loud, solid service, fantastic menu, killer eats, awesome drinks, nicely priced. As long as the place doesn't slip on service nor get lazy on menu variety and execution, this place will be a longitme fave. We need more places like this. Pros: Everything, from seating to drinks to last burp Cons: Nothing to note more

Disappointing at Best 3/5/2008

For as much hype as this place gets it's not really worth it based on my experience here a week ago. We made a reservation 2 days prior and they even called to confirm. Upon arrival the front desk said our reservation was not for that night but the following evening. Interesting since I had the print-out reservation ""receipt"" from the online reservation I had made in my hand. Front desk person couldn't be convinced but she let me know that ""luckily"" (for them) a table had opened up. We sat down in the crowded dining room and waited and waited for our server. We finally ordered drinks from the gal who brought us waters. I ordered a steak and it was EXTREMELY undercooked. Someone took it back to the kitchen to be cooked more and when it was brought back it was no better than when I sent it back. I had lost my appetite by now so I sent the whole plate back. They were very good about not charging for the plate and the owner came over and did apologize. Unfortunately the spotty service was enough to sway me to not visit again Pros: Pearl District Location Cons: Poor Service, No Parking, Poor Food Quality, Expensive more

Won't be back 2/7/2008

Went to Andina for the first time for our anniversary dinner. Will not return. Waited for 15 minutes with a reservation which is a big no, no in my book. Service was detached (that is the most polite way of putting it). Everyone trying really hard to be cool (operative word is trying). Food was lousy and very expensive. more

fantastic dining experience 1/27/2008

I went to Andina last night, (Saturday), and had the most fantastic dinner. The lovely welcoming hostesses (who were all beautiful, I might add) seated us promptly and professionally. The service was divine, as was meeting the owner, Mama Doris. She told us stories of Peru and where the food comes from; her information took dining at Andina from a cool, trendy spot to eat, to an amazing and informative dining experience. I will return again and again. Andina is quite possibly the most interesting place in the Pearl. Cheers to an Peruvian/Oregonian family making a difference in the Pearl! Pros: I felt like I visited Peru! Wonderful food, drink, and service! Cons: Parking more

Inexcusable Mistakes - I will never return! 1/14/2008

Myself and 5 other friends ate at Andina a couple weeks ago. Our reservation was for 8:00pm and when we arrived our coats were taken and we were seated. We ordered appetizers, main courses, and dessert, and had drinks while we waited. The appetizers arrived and were excellent. The main courses arrived and 1 order was completely wrong (steak instead of lamb), 3 orders were cold (they were not supposed to be), 1 order was over cooked (well done instead of medium rare steak), and 1 order was completely raw (raw lamb; disgusting). Though this wasn't the waiter's fault he appologized and took the food back. He did his best to fix the situation and I applaud him for that, but for $100 per person I found these mistakes inexcusable. Outside of the waiter's efforts we were offered no apology, discount, etc., and were handed a $600 bill. We paid and left. Upon leaving we discussed our experience and came to the conclusion that none of us would ever return. If you want good service and good food don't go to Andina. \r \r PS...Due to the open kitchen our clothes smelled like grease...another added bonus! more

Great Service, interesting menu, terrible acoustics 11/16/2007

I dined here last Saturday evening along with four others. We had an 8:00 reservation and were seated promptly. The restaurant is attractive with a lovely ambiance. Unfortunately, it is so loud, you can hardly carry a conversation. \r \r Several of us imbibed in the house cocktail, which is made from passion fruit and I think, Jalapeno pepper. It was tasty, but you can only drink one, as it is a little on the sweet side. We ordered an array of appetizers, all of which were delicious. I'm partial to seafood and especially liked the crab and avocado appetizer. \r The Sommelier was quite friendly and knowledgeable, so if your unsure what kind of wine to order, have him stop by your table. \r \r My husband and I were each a little underwhelmed with our entrees, which was 3 large, grilled scallops, each served a top a small mound of mashed potatoes and sauteed spinach. They were both delivered cold and we had to send them back. The manager immediately came over to apologize, took away the cold meals and returned within minutes with fresh, hot replacements. He handled it exquisitely and it didn't detract from our dining experience. Although the dish itself was bland, it made for a nice presentation. I wish I had ordered the Halibut entree instead, someone else at our table did and was quite happy. It looked delicious. As for the other entrees, they all looked good, but since they were both meat dishes, I didn't try them. Everyone appeared to be enjoying them. Unfortunately, we didn't save room for dessert!\r \r If you don't mind straining to hear your dinner partner(s) and you like a lively atmosphere and an interesting selection of food, then this is the place for you. Did I mention that the service is terrific? \r (I also noticed that when I got home, all my clothes and hair smelled like grease--which is probably due to the open kitchen). Pros: Excellent service and knowledgeable servers Cons: Too loud! more

AWESOME! 10/30/2007

You will definetly want to make reservations for this trendy restaruant. I went on a Monday night and it was quite busy. The atomsphere was fun and vibrant, and the service was great. The food was excellent, even the appetizers. The prices are reasonable as well. A great dining experience in the Pearl! more

My oh my, what a wonderful restaurant! 9/12/2007

A friend recommended Andina to us and I am so glad she did. We brought some friends from out of town and we were all very impressed. The food was excellent. We started off with some wonderful tapas (stuffed peppers, diver scallops, etc) and had fun sharing and enjoying them. My wife and I shared the duck dish and both commented that it was the best duck we have ever had. The service was impecible and very friendly. If you haven't been, go. We can't wait to go back. Pros: Food, Service, Drinks more
