Best

Dinner at Ame inside the St. RegisHotel in San Francisco was magnificent. Taking into account that we did not have reservations yet were still seated in under 30 minutes, the wai...

Worst

Sure, the hotel is glamorous but this restaurant just doesn't cut the mustard. Bland sushi, weak cocktails, cheap-seeming in an inexplicable way despite the upscale hotel surround...

Do not miss this place if you like food! 12/23/2005

No waiting to get the seat. I ordered ""Tuna Five"" first. On that dish, the middle one is the best one with the hint of yuzu, one of Japanese citrus. It was refereshing to have sashimi without using soy sauce. Then, ""Chawan-mushi"", the egg pudding. Growing up in Nagasaki, Japan, where Chawan-mushi was born, I do not think it was the best one but still it was delicious with the excellent combination of sea urchin and lobster, then lotus root. ""Sake marinated Cod"" is simply superb. The balance between the cod and the broth of shiitake mashroom is perfect. Although I failed in differenciating between ""churros"" here and ""churros"" in Mission district, it was pleasant to have sweet dessert after salty food. Dismissing this place just because it is a ""hotel restaurant"" is not wise. Campton Place and Ritz have good restaurants, too! Have fun at Ame! more

This is one of the top 20 restaurants in the city. The blend of italian, french, japanese food with a local organic california flair just works. The Fricasse of Miyagi oysters, Leeks and Mushrooms was one of the best dishes i have ever had. I asked for more bread just to lap up the delicous Beurre Blanc sauce. The Black Cod literally melts in your mouth. The server was one of the most knowledge and passionate servers I have ever met. The sommelier, while reserved, had a wealth of information on the wine list. The decor is maybe a little to modern for my taste, ala Hotel W, but it is a clean and fresh look. Don't know what people are talking about the price being too expensive. Appetizers are about $15, Entrees average $30. I am definately going to try Terra next time i am up in Napa. Pros: Food, Service, Atmosphere Cons: Design too modern, Design too modern more

were we eating at the same restaurant? 12/22/2005

Hi, Just read the review titled "needs lots of work" and was wondering if we ate at the same restaurant. I too ate there last night on the 21st. We had a 7:30pm reservation and were immediately seated. The restaurant is goregeous and I did not think this restaurant is a case of "style over substance." It was clear to us that the staff were all season pros of the best restaurants in San Francisco, very very professional. I think we probably had 5-6 people attending to us including the general manager. The food albeit pricey is beautifully presented, complex, and tasty. Pros: service , uniqueness Cons: price more

needs lots of work 12/20/2005

It's one of those places where the swanky atmosphere makes management think they don't have to train their staff particularly well. Many small mistakes. Not terribly personal. Mediocre service. Food was average to good. This place will do fine for hotel visitors. It's a "hotel restaurant" not a great city restaurant. No comparison to the sf spots that focus on food and service and less on "hipness". Oh, and we were seated at 9:05 for an 8:30 table. Pros: grand space, good cocktails Cons: mediocre service, poor value, loud more

Sophisticated food without service to match 12/16/2005

Definitely a "must" in San Francisco. The menu and the food are imaginative and very well done. The dessert menu needs work as there are too many "cold" items on a menu served during winter??? Service didn't match the restaurant as it was somewhat amateur with the waiter stumbling to recite the specials and mispronouncing them most of the time. He couldn't even recite the tea selections. Hiro Sone needs to take the wait staff aside and have some basis "Menu 101" with them. Otherwise, it's sure to please. Pros: Decor, Food, Ambience Cons: Wait staff, Amateur-ish, Cold more

I came right as this place opened and thus it was not crowded but I expect that it will be soon because the food was absolutely delicious. Not cheap but absolutely worth the price. When you taste the food, you know why you're paying a little bit more. The menu is very original which is so important in a city awash in quality restaurants. I had the ceviche off the sashimi menu and it was like nothing I've ever eaten before. I expect that this place is going to become legendary. Pros: Open for lunch, Fun cocktails more

EVEN BETTER THAN TERRA! 11/27/2005

So I am a big fan of Terra, so I was excited to see that they were opening something in the city. I went to Ame and all I have to say is WOW! First of all, the lounge is BEAUTIFUL! And the restaurant, again beautiful, very unique design. As I sat down to look over my menu, I noticed the sashimi section. What a great option to start the evening! I really enjoyed the crudo and the ceviche. The rest of our meal was flawless. My date and I loved the scallop/obster dish and the eel/foie gras risotto! Don't miss the churros and the chocolate cake with beet ice cream! And to top it off, our server Shawn was great! He really helped us with the menu and the sommelier selected great wine pairings (he came from the French Laundry!) If you love Terra, you will adore Ame! more

Amazing addition to San Francisco!!! 11/27/2005

We went to Ame for dinner and we were completely blown away! We didn't have a reservation so we were offered a seat at the sashimi bar. It looks like a sushi bar at first, but its not sushi at all, you are given the full menu! Our service was phenomenonal...but the food was even better! Raw treatments from the sashimi section such as the Tuna Five and Lissa's Staff Meal were like nothing we had ever had before. We chose the fricasee of oysters and the japanese egg custard as our appetizers, again AMAZING! As for entrees, we had the Terra signature dish the Sake marinated black cod and the beef cheeks. We were undoubtly thrilled with both. It's been a long time since I've been to a restaurant and not had a critique..and this place has only been open like 3 weeks! It is a must try! Great Lunch spot! 11/26/2005

My girlfriend and I had lunch at Ame the other day. We had a great time! Our server was very friendly and accomodating even though we didn't know much about wine or sashimi. He helped us pick out the right dishes to suit our needs and paired a couple of nice wines as well. Overall, we were extremely happy. I can't wait to go back for dinner soon. Pros: Great food, Exotic cuisine, Superb service Cons: I suggest VALET! more

A pleasant evening 11/23/2005

The decor is beautiful, with the dark woods and sleek lines. The food inventive but not inspiring. I eat out often and have been more impressed by other places. It is definitely very expensive, and too pay so much for a meal, I like to be wowed and I wasn't. The service was very good and prompt. But for me the food fell flat, because I feel the trend right now is to pair things together that you wouldn't normally expect. In the act of trying to be creative, the flavor of the food got lost somewhere. For example, my table had toro which sat atop a crouton dipped in foie gras oil. The fish was overwhelmed by the strong flavor of the foie gras, that the wonderful texture and flavor of the toro became wasted. Overall it was pleasant. Pros: Ambiance, Wonderful service Cons: Very expensive, Food so-so more
