Dinner at Ame inside the St. RegisHotel in San Francisco was magnificent. Taking into account that we did not have reservations yet were still seated in under 30 minutes, the wai...

Sure, the hotel is glamorous but this restaurant just doesn't cut the mustard. Bland sushi, weak cocktails, cheap-seeming in an inexplicable way despite the upscale hotel surround...

Disappointing 4/25/2006

We were there on a Sunday night. The cuttlefish noodles were not fresh and the salmon eggs were so fishy that I couldn't make myself swallow them. The sea urchin was fresh and sweet, and the wine list was interesting and well priced. The sake marinated bass was okay but slight on the fishy side. The waiter was very knowledgeable, but we had to pour our own wine all night. Not the kind of service you would expect from this class of restaurant. We usually don't have any problem with small portions, but the cheese course was ridiculously small. There are plenty of good restaurants in the city, there're no reasons to go back there anytime soon. Pros: Good wine list Cons: Raw seafood not fresh, Needs better service more

Nice place 4/24/2006

I was there in late January for a birthday dinner. The waiter had warned us about the small size plates and he wasn't kidding! We stated with the white bean soup, my guest enjoyed it, I thought it was tasteless. We both had fish dishes, he had the "" Sone's infamous sake-marinated cod"" which I tried. We both agreed that it was a ""safe"" plate. In other words the sauce flavors were basic and nice enough that most people would enjoy it. I forget the name of the plate I had but it consisted of lobster tail, scallops, very nice, wish the plate had more food on it! the atmosphere is nice so I do recommend the place, and i might return to try another plate but there's so many others I'll visit first. Pros: great ambience Cons: portion size too smal more

Great food, rude Maitre D'hotel 4/3/2006

Great food, good service from the waiter, lovely decor & fantastic wine list. The only negative aspect was the rude Maitre D' or manager (not quite sure of his position).. look dude, I know you may have come from Chalie Trotter but that does not give you permission to be pompous and rude. I know why reservations are made, you dont need to explain it to me and as long as i am ordering food to my table then who cares if everybody in my four top isnt here yet. Overall a great restaurant, just wish the service matched the food. Pros: Food, Wine list, Decor Cons: maitre d., can be tough to spot, from the street more

Went for lunch 3/24/2006

Danish Modern meets contemporary Japan interior is well executed. Could walk by the street entrance, only my glimpse of the cool floating wine rack tipped me off. ""Out"" of San Pellegrino water, substituted Badoit - not really the same. Signature sake infused cod was great. Crab pasta needed work. Monotonous presentation, too much butter. Tasty Lobster chowder, plenty of lobster but needed a plate under the bowl - had to put my soup spoon on the tablecloth. Great winelist -impressed to see Phelps Insignia 2002 ($330!!), this was Wine Spectator's Wine of the Year w/ 100 points and hard to come by. Wines by the glass offered wide selection. Choice list of sake by the glass, expensive, $6-$15 for 3 oz, but a treat. Spiegelau glassware and Villeroy and Boch porcelain. Lobby of the St. Regis is a work of art. Restroom amenities first class, carrera marble, gorgeous dark woodwork. more

Best New Restaurant 2/11/2006

The food, decor, wine, and service are always great. For seafood, this is the place to go. I recommend to all my friends who love seafood. I would order 3 or 4 small dishes instead of ordering a main course, so you can try their many different dishes since they do not have a tasting menu. I ordered TUNA 5 WAYS twice and they were not the same TUNA 5 WAYS. That makes more interesting to order every time you go there. The only dish I won't order is CHAWANMUSHI. Good food/so-so service 1/23/2006

Entrees were great (beef cheeks, scallops, etc.). I went a week after opening, so the ambience might be better now with more people going. Service ruined it. My wine took a while to come up & upon asking, I received a snappy remark from the server. Ive been to the best restaurants in California, and for me to pay $400 at Ame, I would expect a little more. All in all, good food although different from Hiros Terra in Napa. Service needs to be improved. Pros: Beef cheeks Cons: Service more

Fabulous from Start to Finish! 1/9/2006

From the moment I called the hostess couldn't be nicer...'oh you need a reservation for tomorrow night...we are full but will do our best to accomodate you' not a hint of sarcasim in her voice which can be common for such a 'hot' restaurant. As it turned out there was a cancellation and we got a table. Our waiter Shawn was the most knowledgable and intelligent waiter I have met in ages. I thought about pouring myself more wine and almost magically a man was there in an instant to do the honors. The food was fabulous...though the dessert menu could be revised with some more 'traditional' selections. As we left I spoke with the manager and he could not have been more gracious. This was the dining experience we all hope for from beginning to end...what a wonderful place! Pros: Service, Food, Ambience Cons: Dessert Menu strange more

FABULOUS! 1/5/2006

Wow. The food was amazing. The freshest seafood, prepared in some of the most innovative ways I've seen in a while. I had the oyters fricasse appetizer and the black cod for my entre. The oysters were amazing - delicious beurre blanc and great flavor otherwise. The cod was so sweet and buttery it melted in my mouth. Everything else on the menu looks amazing too. The decor is really cool - dark wood and interesting furniture. The service was great, though our server did seem like he was kind of nervous. The 300 bottle wine list is pretty good too. I have never been to Terra, but I am definately going to go next time I am in Napa. Ame is one not to miss here - I highly reccommend it and predict that it will get very hot very soon, so go now!! Pros: amazing seafood, sashami, cool decor more

not worth it 12/27/2005

i had an awful experience here. though the food is quite good, the service is so bad that it just doesnt even out. perhaps my experience was a fluke, but it included inedible items of food and the need to repeat simple requests. further, we were never offered drinks and mostly couldnt find our waiter for the duration of the meal. because this place is so expensive, and so hyped, i expected much much more. san francisco has much better to offer. Pros: Very attractive space Cons: Terrible service more

Do not miss this place if you like food! 12/23/2005

No waiting to get the seat. I ordered "Tuna Five" first. On that dish, the middle one is the best one with the hint of yuzu, one of Japanese citrus. It was refereshing to have sashimi without using soy sauce. Then, "Chawan-mushi", the egg pudding. Growing up in Nagasaki, Japan, where Chawan-mushi was born, I do not think it was the best one but still it was delicious with the excellent combination of sea urchin and lobster, then lotus root. "Sake marinated Cod" is simply superb. The balance between the cod and the broth of shiitake mashroom is perfect. Although I failed in differenciating between "churros" here and "churros" in Mission district, it was pleasant to have sweet dessert after salty food. Dismissing this place just because it is a "hotel restaurant" is not wise. Campton Place and Ritz have good restaurants, too! Have fun at Ame! more
