Review content:
Sharkey's Restaurant in downtown Blacksburg, VA is pretty well known in the area for being a bar frequented by rowdy college students on Friday and Saturday nights. What I don't think a lot of people realize is that the food there is also pretty darn good.
The cuisine is pretty simple, basically bar food, but there are a lot of choices and they're generally quite tasty. There are barbeque sandwiches, hamburgers, salads, wraps (my favorite), sandwiches, soups, fajitas, quesadillas, steaks, and more. The prices are very manageable, in an average range of about $6-$10. I can't remember if vegetarian fare is available, but I'm sure they would try to do it if you asked.
One day a week, Sharkey's offers a wing buffet. There are probably 4-6 different types of wings laid out along with salad, yummy slices of cheese or pepperoni pizza, and a platter of these strange but delicious lumps of dough that have been dipped in butter and cinnamon-sugar. Sharkey's also offers other food specials for each day of the week, along with discount beers and mixed drinks.
Let me just take a moment to say that I LOVE Sharkey's waffle fries. They are probably some of the best waffle fries I've ever had. They're slightly crispy on the outside, soft on the inside, and seasoned just right. My husband is addicted to the fries too and always tries to steal mine when I'm not looking.
Here are the cons with Sharkey's that I can come up with: the service isn't fast so when my friends and I meet for lunch, we allow a full hour; it's always at least slightly smokey inside since it's a bar; I'm not sure that it's very wheelchair accessible (perhaps they've improved that with the recent remodel); parking is a bit difficult since it's right downtown; and it's always crowded on weekend nights with young partiers.
I mentioned that one of the not-so-great things about Sharkey's is its location: downtown Blacksburg where parking can be challenging. This location is also a plus, however, because downtown Blacksburg is quite charming. It offers a lot of cute little boutiques and a coffee shop or two, and is a generally lovely place to walk around on a cool afternooon. So stop by Sharkey's while you're checking out Blacksburg and fill your belly with inexpensive but delicious bar food!
