This little diner is a nice place for breakfast. I have never had lunch there before. The prices are better or comparable to other diners in the area, like Charlie Brown's, but the menu is a bit smaller and unfortunately they do not accept credit cards. The sausage gravy is supposedly "homemade," and is pretty good. It is located in a much larger building, and does not have a restroom of its own; instead it shares a restroom with the Garth Fagan Dance Company, and you have to go three floors up on the elevator to get there.

I've been in the Peeble's department store in the Midtown Mall a few times, and have never been impressed. The whole mall is dying a slow, sad death but it seems particularly evident in this store. They honestly make a good effort and the store is generally clean and organized. However, it just can't compete with the bigger more modern department stores at Eastview, Marketplace and other suburban shopping centers. I'm glad this place exists for folks who may not have transportation to get out to the 'burbs, but my guess is that in five years or less this place will be gone.

Abbott's Custard is a Rochester tradition, and a popular spot for a treat on a hot day. They have locations all over the city. I'm not quite sure what the difference between ice cream and frozen custard is, but I know they are both very delicious. (Don't worry, frozen custard is NOT like frozen yogurt!) Abbott's offers a handful of different flavor choices each day, and they also make amazing frozen birthday cakes (or cakes for any occasion.) Once you try it, you will be hooked!

Just ignore those annoying Kirstie Alley commercials that were on a couple of years back - Pier 1 is actually a cool place. They have and eclectic inventory of imported home decor items from all over the world and reasonable prices. It is a good place to find that one little detail that pulls a whole room together, or just to get ideas for making your place look nicer. They also offer a gift registry, and online shopping through their website: http://www.pier1.com/

I was disappointed with Alexandria's on East Ave when I ate there recently. The food was just okay, nothing very noteworthy. The service seemed slow, especially considering the place was relatively empty. The restaurant is below street level, which gives it a slightly secret and mysterious atmosphere. In the summer they have a brick patio for outdoor seating. Perhaps I was there on an off night, but I haven't heard anyone else raving about this place either.

Golden Port is a great spot for dim sum, and full Chinese and Vietnamese entrรฉes. They are also connected to a sushi place next door (must be the same ownership) and you can order items from the sushi menu as well. The service is fast and competent. Its is a great place to bring a bunch of friends and share lots of different items. They also have a full beverage menu. Be aware that they are closed Mondays.

Papyrus in the Cherry Creek Mall is a great place to go if you are looking for unique cards, stationery, wrapping paper or other paper items. My sister-in-law is a big fan of fancy writing paper and I can always find a gift she will love here. The staff is energetic and ready to help. If you don't find what you want here, there is also a Crane paper store upstairs in the mall.

The Little Theater is a real gem in the downtown Rochester community. It shows a surprisingly wide array of independent films ranging from the political to the artsy. You will find movies playing here that you just can't see anywhere else in town. The design of the building is also attractive, with an old-fashioned marquee and plenty of art deco charm. Ticket prices are reasonable and they offer various student, senior and membership discounts. There is parking in a rear lot or on the street, and a cute little cafe is right next door.

I was looking for an outfit for a special occasion and decided to look at Men's Wearhouse at Marketplace Mall. I'd had a good experience at other locations, so I expected to enjoy shopping there. I'm not a big clothes horse, and I wasn't sure exactly what I was looking for so I just wanted to browse and get some ideas. I found the salesperson to be pushy and rather condescending in his tone when he decided that I needed some help. I really hate being treated like an idiot, so I was out of there very quickly. Not a good experience, and I don't plan on being a repeat customer.

Constantine and Dmitri Stefanou (father and son) co-own a realty and property management company. I used to live in an apartment building of theirs downtown. They do most of their own repairs, and we were generally pleased with their responsiveness and customer service. They really do make an effort to keep the building looking beautiful with flowers, painting etc. My biggest complaint was that the windows (supposedly new) were somewhat drafty, the electrical circuits were easily overloaded and the plumbing seemed to clog a bit too easily. All of these things are not unexpected in older buildings, but the rent they charge made me expect things to work a bit better. This may not be the case in other apartments or other buildings owned by this company.
