I live in Foster City, so it's not my neighborhood store, but it is on the way home for me from downtown San Mateo. I stopped in here on Christmas Eve and it was not a madhouse scene that I'm sure the area Safeways and Albertsons were. The checkers were friendly. It has a non-Starbucks coffee kiosk and has a decent baked good section - I was tempted to take one of the packaged cakes home, though I didn't have occasion to. The prices are reasonable, in line with Trags as an independent and competitive with the chains. If you need more than the local convenience store offers and don't want to stand in long lines, Key Market is your kind of market.

We went for a late lunch on Christmas Eve (you know, a traditional Jewish Christmas) and nearly had the place to ourselves. The waiters were attentive, the drinks (I had a Sake-tini, my wife had a girly cocktail) were good, though a bit pricey. We started with an Indian-inspired bread and curryish dipping sauce that was good, albeit a little bland. For my entree, I had an Origami Seabass that was really good with Coconut Rice. Neither my wife nor I like coconut, but the rice is sweet and sticky and good. My wife had Garlic Noodles with Chicken, which was interesting in the old world/new world pairing of Asian flavors with basil and tomatoes and pepper. I'd heard people rave about Straits and I'd definitely go back with a crowd, but it wasn't as good as I expected.

Took my daughter for pizza by the slice and the slices are big and taste good. I had the greek salad, which I thought was a bargain at $2.75 with lots of olives and feta cheese. They had a lunch meal with pizza, salad and soda for only $5.50. The nutrition information is available on their website, http://www.pizzamyheart.com, which is important to our family since my wife is a Weight Watcher.

Edmond's has been around for 37 years and Edmond and his family still actively run it and love what they do. It is a relatively big shop and easy to get around without bumping into things. They have arrangements at every price point, are open 7 days a week and I've been told is the place to be during San Mateo's Wine Walk.

My wife gets my daughter clothes here on Black Friday every year. This year was no exception, though she did report that the wait was much better this year than in the past. If money was no object, we'd probably get all her clothes here because even I can see that they are CUTE. My daughter is pretty rough on her clothes and these have held up well (no holes, no stains) and has great resale value on Craigslist or Ebay. My daughter gets a lot of handme downs from her cousin, who probably gets them handed down from someone else, so they last year after year. My wife spent $30 today on 3 pairs of leggings and two shirts (she did go to the doorbusters, where she got 30% off the sale prices).

My in-laws love this place and have a waiter who knows them, they go quite often. I don't care for fish, but I do enjoy free meals, so we don't quibble when they want to go here. The cheesy bread is usually great (we did have a cold, but melted order today). They have a full bar and know how to make a good drink. They are willing to make substitutions and they do have steak and pasta and salads that are very good if you are not a fish eater. It is a little pricey for the quality of the food (at least for non-fish entrees).

My son has gone to this swim school off and on for years. The first time we went here, we didn't know that my son had gross motor skills delays and I think the instructor pushed him harder than he could go, but he was young and couldn't articulate that it was physically difficult for him. He didn't want to return, so we didn't push it. He is 6 now and I feel strongly he needs to know how to swim, so we went back. We also signed up his 3 year old sister up at the same time. They don't have "classes" per se, but instructors that have a few students per 30 minute time frame. They have lessons Monday through Friday until 7:30 pm and on Saturdays too. I don't think I've ever seen an instructor with more than 3 kids at a time. If you give them an idea of your child's temperment, they will match you with an appropriate instructor. My son and daughter have young patient instructors this summer and they are loving it!

We went here for lunch yesterday. My wife had a Greek salad that had big chunks of tomato and cucumber. My kids shared a $14.95! beef kabob that was very tasty. I was going to order orange juice for the kids but balked at the $4 price tag. How big would oj have to be to be worth that? This place is sort of a hole in the wall - very small, but nicely decorated. My wife mentioned it to her friends and got mixed reviews. We do plan to go back, but we won't necessarily rush.

We were wine tasting at St. Francis and were looking for a casual restaurant for dinner before heading back to the SF peninsula. The pourer (I'm sure he has a title, but I'm a novice) raved about this place, so much so that we came back here after being in Healdsburg. We weren't prepared for how casual it was, we had to order from a counter (though the food is brought to you). I had the polenta and it was pretty good, but my wife had the fusilli arrabiata and she didn't think it was spicy enough and she thought the pasta was overcooked/somewhat mushy. The prices were reasonable.

My wife and I went to Sonoma/Napa wine tasting on Memorial Day and after a long day, we wanted to hit one more winery before heading home. We got to Healdsburg at 4:45pm and most everything closed at 5. My wife and I like not only tasting wine, but the vineyard is crucial to our tasting, we don't like tasting rooms. But we got lost and it was a tasting room or nothing. We had our choice of a few on the same street, but we liked the name of this one. The pourers were very nice, they weren't rushing anything. They gave us casual dining recommendations, since we don't live anywhere close.
The tasting was free, which we love, as we were used to that in New England and don't like paying for tasting. And we absolutely LOVED their Risque which is a sweet sparkling wine. Our palates have matured over the years and we haven't had a white zinfandel in years, but this is supersweet and supergood. The wine is reasonably priced (most under $25). Even so, we don't part with money easily and we bought 2 Risques!
