Doobie’s is a crowded smoky cheap bar that is very neighborhood oriented, but draws a larger crowd of people looking for crowded smoky dive bars. Their recent façade improvement has taken away a bit of the external dinginess (I deeply miss the mossy rotten wood outside), but you’ll be happy to know the interior is the same as ever. I also am always amazed that the plants in the window boxes survive with so much smoke.

I went here once. It was a summer weekend morning and I had some friends down from New York. One wanted Belgian beer and I wanted a Bloody Mary. We initially went to Monk’s, but there was no place to sit, so we came here. My friend was dismayed that they didn’t have Chamais on tap. I was dismayed by the bloody mary which was half Tabasco sauce with the other half being canned tomato juice. Neither of us enjoyed ourselves and we left as soon as we could. Perhaps we had unrealistic expectations and they do other things better or it was an inexperienced bartender because it was so early.

I lived in the Long Lane apartments for almost two years. I looked at all the apartments within walking distance of 69th Street Terminal and this was the one I chose. The price was lower than many of the other buildings in the area. The apartments all have parquet floors and radiator heat. They all have different designs and there are a variety of sizes. Mine had original 1920’s bathroom features including black and white checkered tile. The managers were always available to fix problems, though you often had to call them repeatedly to remind them of problems that weren’t serious. The buildings have some nice art deco features to them as well.

I looked at all the apartment buildings within walking distance of 69th St terminal and this was one of the best. I don’t like carpeting and I wanted radiator heating. These rooms had hardwood floors and lots of original 1920’s detailing. The building is quite nice looking and has a pleasant courtyard. I ended up moving into the Long Lane Apartments down the street, but this was the only other building I look at that came close. It is a little far from the terminal, which was my deciding factor. Still this place is quite affordable for what you get.

Cut provides an expensive haircut of good quality. The haircut ended up being about $30, which isn’t so bad for a fancy haircut. The quality was good, though it didn’t blow me over. It is located right in the gayberhood. The atmosphere was crowded and there were lots of windows onto the street.

This place is great and it’s downfall comes with everyone knowing it is great. The food is good, the beer is good. They are at prices comparable to their quality, fair, but certainly not cheap. The interior is great with working gas lamps, tin ceilings, tons of wood, and a series of landscape paintings that I really enjoy. Upstairs has an outdoor deck, with a view of Northern Liberties’ ever growing condo community. The main issue comes with the fact that it tends to be so crowded it is hard to find a seat without some very active jockeying. I’m willing to stand around waiting for a bargain, but not so much for quality goods at fair prices.

I’ve only experienced Ziggy’s when I’m back in town for holidays and it is one of the busiest bars in town. I used to see tons of people from high school, but as they grew up and stopped going to keggers, so they stopped going to this bar. As with all bars in Amherst, it is very cheap. This one is a little more lively than most.

The Kyber has a great selection of music and lots of good bands play there. It is small and smoky, and an intimate place to see bands. If the act is too popular however, it can be hard to see them, as the stage isn’t raised very high off the ground. Upstairs is free and has dj’s playing. The upstairs can get crowded very early and has random hours of opening. This is a non-yuppie place in old city, which is a rarity for certain. I always keep it on the radar for times when I’m in old city looking for a drink.

This place is great in many ways. It is like they marketed it specifically for me. There is high kitsch value and a fairly relaxes atmosphere for a Star restaurant. The food is good and is sort of an American snack food tapas set up, which makes it better for snacking and drinking, than dinner. I like the roof deck a lot, as Philadelphia is sorely lacking comfortable outdoor seating. I recommend this place during non-dinner hours (so before 7pm on weekends or on weekdays). The clientèle from old city invades during Friday and Saturday nights.

Despite the horrible name which brings up images of a cocktail never meant to be imagined and a location in a miserable strip mall setting, this place does good hair. The service is friendly and the salon is large and modern. It is right off of West Chester Pike and can be reached by the 104, 120, & 123 busses from 69th St Terminal.
