Behrens Pharmacy looks like a place you might go for prescriptions only, but it actually has a decent selection of soaps, shampoos, shaving cream, etc., despite its small size. There is a lot of stuff packed on the shelves here and sometimes you have to bend down and really sort through it to find what you need. It could stand to be open a little later, though.

Paragon tries to cover every sport and even though it seems like they would spread themselves thin, they do a pretty good job covering many sports well. The bike shop, ski & snowboard shop, and tennis shop and sneaker shop are all great. Staff is knowledgeable. It gets crazy in here near the holidays, though. Ski & snowboard bus trips in the winter, with or without rental equipment, are available.

The pioneer has a totally unique roster of movies, not the standard list of "art house" movies. They often try to feature New York relevant films and/or films directed by New Yorkers. Every saturday, they have midnight movies that are usually creepy or something. For a long time they just played Donnie Darko every weekend, but now they mix it up a bit more.

Sunshine is a better than average Manhattan movie theater with a pretty consistent lineup of arty-type, yet popular, movies. In my experience its more spacious and pleasant than the typical sony and ua theaters and it has a better snack bar. Of course it is no BAM, but hey, there can only be one, I suppose.

You probably already know all about Century 21, which would explain why it is always so crowded and chaotic. You will find some good deals here, on suits, ties, underwear, shoes, kitchen supplies, bedding, etc. However, you must be patient and remain calm as thousands of tourists surge around you while you try to shop. The men's suit alcove on the balcony is probably the only calm place in the store, and also home to the only men's dressing rooms.

Beacon's Closet is somewhere between the Goodwill store and a trendy hipster boutique. It's a great place to take your clothes when you clean out your closet because they'll pay you cash (a little bit) or store credit (a little more) for the few items that are cool enough to grace their clothes racks. They will donate the rest to charity for you. On certain days everything with a chosen color tag will be half off and you can really find some deals. For the non-half-price items, it can be expensive, especially for used clothing. FYI, men's and women's jeans are not separated and all are kept in the women's section.

Norman's has this weird "going out of business" or "clearing out our excess inventory" vibe going all the time, even though it's not doing either of those things. Its always in a state of disarray and the basement is always different, but not really better, every time I go. They have a lot of used cds and you can usually find some good cheap stuff if you are patient. The new cds are average in price and norman seems to have a good selection of blues and jazz.

Recycle-A-Bicycle is a great place to get a used bike, or to gets tune-ups and repairs. It is very inexpensive and the work is done by city kids who are learning the trade from professional bike mechanics, so you can feel good about where your money is going. You can donate your old bikes here, which they will fix up and sell, to keep the program going.

Great little spot to print out stuff in color or black and white, send faxes, make copies, etc. He's got powerful pcs and macs, so you don't need to worry about opening your files and crashing everything. Its not usually crowded, so its very quick to get in and out. I always feel like its a little expensive, but there is no where else in the neighborhood to do this stuff and I'm kind of cheap, so...

There's not really much to say about Brothers Cleaners because it is exactly what you already expect. They are completely competent dry cleaners and launderers. They offer tailoring as well and seem to be good at that. The turn around time is usually like two or three days. They are open from 7am to 7pm monday through saturday.
