I teach for a drawing program called Young Rembrandts, and I want to share what a great program it is. I've seen kids come into class thinking they can't draw and walk out amazed at what they can do. In this program we teach drawing, the fundamental skill of all visual arts. We believe drawing is a skill that can - and should - be learned by all children. Our classes combine foundational art skills with a fun, nurturing environment and give your child the academic advantage. We offer continually offer new classes in after-school programs and in your community. Take a look!

This place is kind of out of the way, up on Bethel Rd, but it has a pretty good selection of costumes. They have both prepackaged basic costumes (clown, monster, princess) and also bits and pieces you may need to pull together your own idea. Lots of wigs and mustaches and face paint. They also rent more quality costumes, if you really want to splurge and be the Elizabethan Queen you've always dreamed of being.

The Columbus College of Art and Design offers Saturday classes for kids from first grade through high school. Upper-level college students run the classes and the curriculem is impressive. They offer a digital art course now for high school seniors, which covers web design. It's a great opportunity, though a little pricey (I guess not more so than any other extra-curricular activity). I took these classes when I was little and they were great, a few hours on a Saturday really learning techniques with a bunch of other kids who were into it. We had great materials and instruction, and a lot of interesting projects.

Highbanks is the best place to get lost around Columbus. There are real ravines and loopy trails as well as picnic and grill areas. You can go canoing and fishing, but I've never taken advantage of the water opportunities, I usually just walk around in the woods until the spider webs start freaking me out. I think there are some Indian burial mounds lying around somewhere in there as well. A good place to go sledding, except bathrooms are far, far away.

I needed an interesting evening dress for a black and gold new year's party one time and was in a panic; this place saved me. It's fairly sparse inside and if you buy clothes at full price it can get expensive, but they usually have good sales, especially on their underwear, which is pretty fancy. If you need to look like a lady, go to Circa.

Orlando is pretty much a wasteland and no one is going to argue with me about that. This little start up has a lot of gumption and I'm sure will eventually flourish. It's one of theonly places in Orlando that you can see new independent films. They have a film-slam once a week for local filmmakers to show their stuff, and a small gallery next doors for local artists to do the same. They are small ans struggling, but people should go and support them, because otherwise it's megaplexes for everyone.

Evolved is probably one of the most professional and clean tattoo places in the city. They have very fine artists and their tattoos are often featured in magazines. They screen their staff very throughly and everyone who works there is extremely commited and serious about what they do, as behooves people making permanent and invasive changes to your body.

I discovered this place in the Short North during a Gallery Hop and it is certainly a very stylish Short North-type opticians. I was trying on glasses I liked and this staff guy Patrick came over and said I was doing it ALL WRONG and picked out some for me that HE liked and I bought them, too. Then the guy who does the eye test screwed it up and I had to go through this big ordeal before I got my glasses, but they were apologetic about it and overall it was a good experience, except when Patrick later saw me cleaning my new glasses with my shirt and screamed at me because I was scratching up the lenses. It's because he cares.

Used Kids is a campus music store which carries used and new cds, dvds, and vinyl. They don't mind hunting something down for you, and it's nice to have a close place to sell your old stuff, although you don't usually get that much for it, but that's typical. They feature local music cds, if you're interested in what columbus talent is up to. Staff has that snobbery that comes with any specialized field, but also necessary knowledge.
