This place has got to be one of the "must-visits" for Connecticut. Located off I-95, this hot dog shack is terrific.
The owner still cooks there (he's the guy in the bandana) and cooks a great hot dog. He has a bunch of different varieties and they all have different names (Chicagoan, Californian, New Englander) and have ingredients like celery salt, onion sauce, sliced tomato, lettuce, etc. Each dog has a different personality. Some have a sweet sauce, some have a hotter sauce.
The french fries are out of this world. A small order is HUGE and a large order is VERY BIG.
Each hot dog is about $2.25 and the fries are roughly the same price. They have cold soda (bottled) and iced tea. Parking can be cramped, but you can park across the street too.
I've been to this place time and time again, and these guys are the best. Simply a no-frills hot dog restaurant with good food and nothing else!

Jet cleaners has been around for years. I remember going to them as a kid with my dad's stuff as it was right around the corner from where we lived.
They moved to a bigger location which is located near the I-95. It's very roomy inside and they do take cleaning seriously.
I've never had any issues with them and I think that their service is on par with other places. I don't think there's anything that sets them apart from another good cleaner, other than they are nice and on-time.
They have free on-site parking.
They also have one-hour cleaning (which is extra) but they do a good job. They have Saturday hours as well, which a lot of places don't have anymore.

The Hamden YMCA is a great place if you're looking for a cheaper way to entertain your family in the summertime. Not having a pool in my own backyard, visiting the YMCA and using their pool has been a great treat. It's actually one of the only pools that I've found to be WARM!
The pool can sometimes be overrun by seniors doing their laps, but for the most part open swim times are plentiful.
The YMCA also has a bunch of things for kids to do, and they have a lifeguard on staff to watch the pool as well.
They offer trial memberships, and partial memberships and each membership includes full use of their facilities. It's definitely a good inexpensive way to get involved in a good community group.
They also have a summer camp which fills up rather quickly. It's a very popular camp and they do a lot of fun activities and field trips.

I always thought that community centers (such as the YMCA, etc.) were supposed to be easily joinable and not too expensive. Unfortunately, the JCC is on the expensive side.
They advertise financial assistance for their membership fees in two ways; 1) money off and 2) membership in trade for other skills. I attempted to do the latter and was denied. They did take $200 off the membership, which was still too pricey for me.
The place is huge, and clean, and very nice. Although, it's definitely expensive. I don't know how other families would be able to join and stay there, but somehow they do.
They do have a bunch of recreational activities, and have a bunch of kids activities, so you family should be well entertained.

It's depressing to go to a shelter when you see so many dogs & cats that need homes. The West Haven shelter is a bit different. There's always a dog or cat that needs adoption, but they are very helpful in getting you the proper pet that you need.
You may ask to see pictures ahead of time, so you don't have to feel bad when looking through the many pets they have looking for homes. In addition, there isn't a huge delay from the time you wish to adopt to the time you take your new friend home, like with other shelters.
This place is also clean and very well staffed. The staff doesn't just do their job for the money, they really care about the animals that they place. This place is great!

Tommy K's always seems to have a great selection of DVD's. They also will buy back some of your old DVD's and often has great prices on their previously rented DVD's.
Tommy's policy of every 10th rental is free, still applies. They have regular promotions and discount days. You can also return all your Tommy K movies to ANY location, so if you happen to be closer to one location, they'll take them back for you.
It's a fun place to go and not "corporate" by any means. They have a large selection and generally have all the new releases in stock. They even take reservations for new videos that come out!

Bridgeport Bluefish is in a great location and a great stadium.
Unlike the Historic Yale Field which hasn't been updated in decades, Bridgeport Bluefish at Harbor Yard, is modern, up to date, and fun!
They always have promotions and discounts available, and it's a great time. The Bluefish are a very good minor league team and have been in the state for several years.
They also have fireworks shows on Friday's and at other special times. They are conveniently located off I-95 and close to the train station as well. Parking is on-site and also very reasonable.
The stadium is first class -- there's tons of room and because it's relatively new, the stadium is in excellent shape.
It's a lot of fun for the family and a great change from the usual night out.

Mystic Aquarium is located in Mystic, CT in a little village. It offers a great aquarium and tanks that you can see up close.
Mystic has several shows a day which feature penguins, sea lions, and even dolphins. These change throughout the year, so call ahead if you want to see what the attraction is.
They recently added a Titanic exhibit which has a lot of artifacts and history of the Titanic. You can even go into a submarine and see what it feels like for those that had to live in them!
Mystic has a terrific hands on display for kids and adults. You can see Stinray's, Turtle's and other sea creatures up close and even touch them!
Although it's a bit pricey for an attraction, it's a must-see!

Quassy Amusement park is terrific for families. They have tons of rides and is perfect for summer camps too!
Their latest attraction, Saturation Station, is a compliment to the park as it adds a way to get wet in the park featuring over 30 new attractions in this "station".
And, what theme park would be complete without the usual bumper cars, roller coasters and fried dough!
Quassy also has coupons and discounts which are offered throughout the season. During the summertime, it's a favorite spot for summer camps, so be prepared for a long wait for parking and attractions.
Generally it costs a little less than $20 (without a discount admission ticket) for the rides, so it is very affordable for a day of fun.

You won't find Disneyworld type rides here, but you will find a lot of rollercoasters and rides for enthusiasts alike.
Formerly owned by Hershey, this is CT's oldest theme park and the oldest running theme park in the country. They really do a good job around Halloween when they decorate the park into a haunted attraction including a haunted house and haunted rides.
The park is extremely busy during the summertime, so expect long line wait times. Parking is impressive and generally shouldn't be a problem. Parking is not included in the price of admission.
Park hours are very decent and the variety of rides is very good.
