The things are nice but the service is nonexistent 10/19/2008

Relish sells great stuff, and much of it isn't available in Portland stores - only online at finndesign or in shops out of town. Taste is important but (especially when the prices are high) service counts, too. The problem with Relish is that, in my several experiences shopping there, the personnel are either openly neglectful or just plain too busy to bother with you. I shopped there on crutches last summer ( I was the only customer there) and was offered no help at all. The owner was absorbed in a phone conversation for the entire time - including motioning me to give her my VISA card once I had made my selection, which I was carrying with difficulty. A birthday gift of jewelry that a friend ordered by phone to be sent - making the specialness of the occasion clear - to her daughter arrived with a hasty and messy piece of tissue around it, barely securing the item. No other wrapping! On several others occasions I've found the staff (including owner) to be deeply absorbed in goings-on behind the counter to the exclusion of offering any help to shoppers. It's places like Relish that help the internet win the retail wars. Pros: Good things Cons: Service is nonexistent; not much stock more
