Best

Great Tex Mex happy hour menu- steak tacos, nachos, quesadillas. Very good deals & relaxing atmosphere. I like the Ballard location best. It fills up early, so go on the early ...

I've had drinks at the Matador several times and have always enjoyed the atmosphere and margaritas. Tonight however, my boyfriend and I decided to try some of the food and we were...

I'd rather be gored by a bull 4/20/2006

Boo. This place blows. At first I thought it was because it was a "scene" but then I went in to try their food and it was BAD. And the wait staff was rude. And it was still a scene. And loads of drunk people come out of there at night and harass the other people trying to enjoy their evening. more

Popular because it's good 3/5/2006

The time to hit Matador in Ballard is 4-6pm or 10-12pm Sunday through Thursday for Happy Hour or to watch a game. Like it's cousin, Pesos, in Lower Queen Anne - just about any $4 appetizer is going to be great during these times. My favorites on the happy hour menu include the romaine salad, fire jumbo prawns, fish tacos, and the nachos (add chicken). If you can't make it by 6pm - try the chevre-filled bacon-wrapped jalepenos, the 1/2lb burger or the Habenero Enchiladas (one of the few items also found on Pesos menu). Beyond the food, the atmosphere is warm and inviting - a triangle of glass on the corner of Ballard Ave and Market - where the sun sets framed perfectly in the summer evenings - even has a number of tables set outside the open windows in the warmer months. The custom wood and ironwork, as well as warm colors, open fire pit, grand mirrors, hanging glass globe lights, and a hip selection of music make you as comfortable as any of the many staff who have been there since it opened. For lunches and weeknights, you're likely to find mostly casually dressed, friendly Ballard residents or regulars of all ages from nearby neighborhoods at the bar who welcome a good chat. If the weeknight crowd sounds appealing, definitely find other places to go on the Friday/Saturday nights though, as you will find the regulars driven out by the super-sharky, cuff links and cleavage Belltown overflow, snorting heavy perfumes and cologne, ogling each other and the wait staff, while crushing in to standing-room only 3-4 deep from the bar. more

No, not typical Ballard, but enjoyed Matador for what it is 2/20/2006

... which is a fun, upscale Mexican/latin/whatever restaurant. We went there on a quiet Monday evening in late February and didn't wait more than a couple of minutes for a table. We ordered some appetizers and a salad: the spicy prawns were *very* spicy but good, the crabcakes were very nice, and the scallops were awesome. Highly recommend all of them. Margaritas were excellent as well. more

Not typical Ballard... 12/29/2005

But still fun. Summer happy hours were great, after 10pm on the patio, and the ribs? They are truly to die for. more

Amazing Nachos, good bar scene... 11/21/2005

Randomly ended up here on Sunday night to watch the football game. It's primarily a restaurant, a little on the upscale side, but there's a great bar, two HDTV screens and Pilsner Urquel on tap. I was there with a couple of friends and we ordered the nachos which were spectacular. If you're wimpy about spicy food, then avoid the stuffed jalapenos, but if not, those are top-notch as well. Lots of pretty people at the bar and the staff were a blast too. All in all, a great spot. I'll definitely be going back. more

Not a matador fan 9/24/2005

I've been to matador 3 times and I'm still not converted. I found the food so-so and the service just o.k. The place is a little to "sceney" for Ballard and gets really busy. Sure, the outdoors are nice in the summer, but I don't think this place is worth the wait. Drinks are pretty expensive and it may be awhile before you get a second round. more

Holy Crap!! Eat the Nachos.......!!!! 8/18/2005

I really like this place. The bartenders are great. Service is very good. And I totally, tottaly recommend the happy hour! DO NOT MISS the chance to have there Nachos. I'm not kidding when I say they have the best plate of nachos I've ever had in my life, anywhere. No kidding. more

Hip restaurant with flavorful food 8/18/2005

The Matador is a good addition to Ballard. The Spanish/Mexican food is incredible and the restaurant is a fun, hip spot to go. There is a large "fire pit" that you can sit around, several window tables and a nice bar. The crowd is usually young and hip, and the entire restaurant is 21 and over. It can get kind of crowded, and there's no real "waiting area" while you wait to be seated, so it's a good idea to go when it's not rush time. more

Belltown comes to Ballard 8/17/2005

The Matador is so un-Ballard in so many ways. It is edgy and hip, light and airy, and very, very popular. This is where the Yuppies go, and everyone elso goes there, too, grudgingly, because the food is good (and cheap during happy hour, 4-6), the drinks are strong, the waitresses attentive and attractive, and the metalwork all over the place is out of this world. This does not have the grist and soul of La Carta, across the street, but it has a great energy and ambiance. more

Fantastic Happy Hour! 8/16/2005

I was waiting with baited breath for Matador to open, since I always love finding new neighborhood destinations. This place doesn't disappoint. The space is intimate (translated: small) with a cozy fire pit in the middle. Seating is limited, so if you have to get there early to snag a table, and during the summer, try and get the outside seating for all of the people watching on Market Street. The meals are reasonable and quite tasty ( I have enjoyed the enchiladas a number of times), but the real draw for me is the happy hour. The appetizers are delicious and cheap (at least by Seattle prices). My special favorite is the Baja Shrimp Taco. It is a must order every time. more

Matador -- great fajitas, NO KIDS allowed, reasonable nite out 8/16/2005

Love the outdoor seating, and the fajitas, margaritas, mojitas, efficient wait-staff. The guys will LOVE the sports-TV's over the bar & the hot waitresses. Pretty crowded weekends, but they will take your name and you can stroll Ballard while you wait. The best part, is NO KIDS ALLOWED. Even though I have kids, I don't appreciate little kids running around cutely while I'm trying to eat. (think HiLife in Ballard if you like kids underfoot) The 2nd best part, is being able to go out, have dinner and a couple of drinks and it's under $100. Significantly under $100 (think Rays if you like paying $$$$) Downside -- it's LOUD -- and it's smoky, so if that bothers you, you won't like it. But if you like ENERGY, it's awesome. more

OK food and drinks, but hold the..... 7/6/2005

The food is ok, the service ok, so why give this place two stars? Going the way of Fremont makes this once separate city a haven for the meatmarket crew. Hey, I'm all for change, as we all should be, but the rolex/hummer/steroids crowd should stay in belltown and hang out at axis. I'll give the place another chance because the cuisine is decent, but weekends are a "no go". There is a lot that goes into making a restaurant a great spot, and they have it 1/3 right. Best of luck to the Matador--focus on the cuisine and atmosphere. OK, so I went back again because we really needed outdoor seating and you know what....I've warmed up to the place. Still doesn't have the mix right, but the food and cocktails are really good and the service was much better. Upped to 3 stars. more
