every sunday i go to seattle for my volunteer gig at left bank books (one great bookstore) and before i go in to the bookstore i always, always have to get a cup of coffee at Local Color. i always order the soy white choco mocha and i am always blissfully content. i've been a barista for a year so i pretty much stopped drinking coffee but Local Color revived my faith in caffeine. Great artworks too, the baristas are super-friendly even if they're always awfully busy.

Underground art is the coolest! And the one good place in town to find it is here at Roq La Rue. The owner definitely has her finger on the pulse of the lowbrow hipster art scene. Her shows constantly bring in the wildest selection of artists. Breaking ground as an alternative to the staid Pioneer Square set, Roq La Rue feeds a need for art for those of us who want nothing to do with the boring white wine and watercolors offered other places. The opening nights of the shows generally provide a rare chance to meet some really cool artists and commune with like-minded citizens of Seattle. You will always leave Roq La Rue with your yen for mind-bending art sated.

More
Some large downtown offices seem to have better modern art than the Seattle Art Museum. From what I have seen, it appears that they have carefully selected work that will appreciate in value, over the next century or so; do they expect to last so long? But perhaps the SAM Rental/Sales Gallery http://www.seattleartmuseum.org/visit/visitRSG.asp helps them by letting them rent art, to see if it is a good fit for their offices before they buy it. SAM features work from other galleries, more than a couple dozen artists, and claims to have access to over 1000 pieces of art. I would recommend this as a decent place to find art as a long term investment because artists who sell works here will probably have work in the corporate collections that may be famous in another century, and not all of them are charging the prices of high-end galleries yet.

This gallery, located in pioneer square, is a fabulous showcase of top notch NW coast artwork. Pieces range from tiny stone carvings to totem poles and masks. for most people, this gallery is eye candy for traditional and contemporary artwork and for collectors, it is probably the best in the state. i have not found the staff to be as chatty as those in galleries in Vancouver, B.C. but they are informative and willing to explain the significance of various pieces. i enjoy taking visitors through this gallery and love the contemporary spin demonstrated in many works. previous years' lecture series have been wonderful, the website suggests they will resume in the fall of 2005.

Lisa Harris Gallery is conveniently located for tourists in the Pike Place Market. However, she doesn't sell the touristy things typically found on the street level. She sells fine art from up and coming artists, in several styles. The benefit of this approach is that those from out of town who come to her gallery may see a somewhat representative sample of Seattle art; with a sizable inventory and a relationship with the artists, the gallery may rapidly acquire and ship virtually any of the hundreds of work available on her website, and a sampling of works from each artist on site. It's worth stopping in for the first thursday Art Walk.

If you're looking for Matcha or any other ChaDo (Japanese Tea Ceremony) accouterments, you may get a good start here. It's a place with many small and interesting nick-nacks from Japan that are very hard to find outside of Japan. These include small bits of dried plants and seeds, religious articles and artistic pieces. Some of their ceramic articles are made by local artists, but many of these are true artistic pieces, not mere imitations of what is seen in most ceramic charts. I highly recommend it as a place to buy small, unique gifts because it is easy to find something memorable and suitable for anyone with good taste who likes things Japanese.

Conworks is a very important asset to Seattle. Their approach of showcasing bold, new works across all areas of art is something very needed in this town of glass blowers and regurgitated trends. While they've had some internal management issues lately, it still remains one of the most exciting art venues in town.
From their website:
"Consolidated Works is a multi-disciplinary contemporary arts center actively developing and presenting work by artists engaged in the exploration of performance, visual art, film, Music and other disciplines. Consolidated Works Uses its programs and facilities to encourage artists, audiences and community partners in the process of multi-disciplinary discovery." http://www.conworks.org/
