Lakewatch Inn is a really nice facility in Ithaca that caters to many fraternity and sorority formals. I have been to it several times and have always enjoyed myself. The Inn itself is realy nice, with a gorgeous view that is a great backdrop against which to take pictures. They have two floors and can also serve alcohol. The dance floor is in the middle and quite spaceous. I found the food to be very good and there was a nice variety every time that I went. I think this place is a bit overdone because too many formals are held here. Given that Ithaca is "centrally isolated", there aren't too many other places, but I would check out Celebrations and some other places to try and be a bit different.

Jon Reis photographed my rather atypical wedding at my parents house in Ithaca. He caught some amazing shots of things that were not planned but spontaneous occurrences, including my dog deciding to take a quick walk down the aisle on his own as a member of the wedding party. Jon is an easy going and unobtrusive presence, but when you look at your photos you realize he missed NOTHING. I have an incredible photo of the end of the ceremony showing my husband and I kissing while encircled by friends and family with rose petals in the air all around. It is a photo that makes everyone happy to look at - whether you were actually at the wedding and remembering or just looking at the photo and immediately experiencing that moment.

Benjamin Peters is primarily a men's clothing store. What's great about it is that, besides it's convenient location on The Commons, it is a store that a man can go into and find just about everything he needs all in one place-- socks, underwear, nice shirts, pants, and suits. In my husband's words, "They have nice products." This is the perfect store for someone who doesn't like to shop but DOES need new clothes now and then. The salesmen are all extremely helpful and have good advice. The convenience and help more than make up for the higher prices. As a bonus, Benjamin Peters also has a nice selection of casual women's shoes (for those of us waiting for our male friends) and good sales.

Big Red Shipping and Storage is a student run business in collegetown. It has grown tremendously in the past few years as a result of Cornell eliminating storage space for students in the dorms. Big Red Storage has a contract with Cornell and heavily advertises to students.
For students who live far away or those who don't want to lug their stuff back and forth between college and home, this is a very good option. The biggest advantage is that Big Red will send people to your apartment or dorm room to pick up the boxes of stuff you want to store. For those without a car, this is a huge benefit. In fact, even for those with a car, it saves the time and energy of having to carry heavy boxes to a storage facility.
Many of my friends have used their services and all have come away happy. The rates are competitive and the non-monetary benefits really make this one of the best options for storage in Ithaca.
For Cornell students looking to store your stuff, this is a good option and I would recommend at least putting them on your short list.

Really excellent; best thing is the dog food selection - all of the good brands that you can't get elsewhere, and a nice selection of raw foods. I've been grumbling at the narrow and mostly low quality food at PetSmart for ages; no idea that these guys were right here. Nice people, too.

Elephant Sound is the DJ company owned by Dj Bob. He is awesome, both as a person and as a DJ. I have used him for fraternity parties and formals and he has also done a wide spectrum of events for all ages. He did the Class of 1980's Banquet Dinner at the Cornell Reunion this past summer.
I have nothing bad to say about DJ Bob. He hires good DJ's who are very accommodating and listen to what you want to play. They will follow your instructions and are very good.
Prices are very very fair. I would highly recommend using Elephant Sound whether it is a party or a more formal function.

I've been to one event at Celebrations. It was a chartering banquet for my boyfriend's fraternity. The hall itself was very nice. Lots of room and well kept. Unfortunately, it was too cold to go outside, but in the summer time, they have a nice patio. I found the food to be extremely good and varied as well. I'm a picky eater so this was not an easy thing to do. While many fraternities and sororities use other facilities, like Lakewatch, for formals, I would suggest checking this place out and maybe mixing it up sometimes.

It doesn't get much more mom and pop than this. John owns a store on the Ithaca Commons. I found him when I bought two pairs of slacks at a going out of business sale near my house. I needed the bottom of the pants shortened.
John knows his stuff. I tried on the pants and he went to work immediately, marking off where to cut and what. I was in and out within ten minutes and had my pants ready by the end fo the week. I was in no rush so I told him to take his time, but he said he could've had them done by the next day if I was really pressed.
John's Tailor Shop is a small store on the corner of the commons. I would definitely recommend it to people who need alterations done and want personal, high quality service

The folks at this UPS Store have always been very helpful and friendly in getting even the most cumbersome things packed and shipped. It's also conveniently located on the west end of The Commons on the corner of State Street and Cayuga. You can also do excellent color copying, even with articles that need to be scaled to fit properly. This is the store I frequent most around Christmas time.

The Ithaca Small Animal Hospital is an excellent veterinary practice located within walking distance of the town center. I take our dog yearly for his shots and check-ups and have always been pleased with the professionalism, quality of care, and respect and gentle touch of the veterinarians and staff towards the animals. I also appreciate that the vets will give phone advice and suggestions when the situation is not urgent. The Ithaca Small Animal Hospital is a full-range practice, including surgical procedures. The front office staff are also friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. This practice is located right behind the Ithaca Bakery (there is also ample parking for those that drive).
