The tompkins county public library on E green street in downtown ithaca has an incredibly large selection of books for the size of ithaca. Inside it is quite modern looking for a library and the staff is knowledgable and very helpful. If you do not have access to Cornell's library, the Tomkins county library is an excellent alternative.

It's hard to talk about everything about Cornell on a site like this; however, I think that it is a great school and one that is worth trying to get into. Admissions is tough, but the resources offered by the university are unparalleled. Amazing classes, great professors, a ton of extracurricular activities, and yes, a lot of snow. I would say that this is not a school for everyone. It is very large and some people won't like or handle that well. Going along with this, most classes are quite big so there isn't so much discussion and interaction as you might get at some smaller schools.

So most people have probably heard of the University. I'll just throw in my two cents as far as what I found interesting about the school and it's resources.
Make sure to take classes in other colleges. The teaching styles of the professors vary widely and there are always great classes to take. Ask around about good classes and professors.
Definitely go gorge diving. Despite being frowned upon by the university, it is something every Cornellian should do. In addition, make sure to attend a Cornell Hockey game. I came to cornell not liking hockey so much and left as a huge fan. Even if you don't like hockey, you'll be amazed at the atmosphere and school spirit shown at the games.
The education you receive is going to depend on what you put in. As Cornell's first President, Andrew Dickson White, said "you are not here to be made, you are here to make yourselves."
Cornell has myriad clubs and organizations on campus. Make sure to get involved in some of them because they add a huge amount to your education.

More
Sue Smith gives private piano lessons in her home studio in the Fall Creek neighborhood. She concentrates primarily on teaching classical pieces, but is also assigns jazz, blues, and modern pieces and teaches improvisation, chord patterns, and sight reading. There are occasional group classes on the weekends. Sue is very professional and works to develop a strong rapport and mutual respect with her students. Her primary requirement for acceptance and continuation in her studio is commitment and she asks each student to determine how much time they can dedicate to piano each day, based on their aspirations, priorities, and time constraints. I appreciate that she also lets her students know about significant current musical events in the community. Our 14-year old has been taking lessons with her for 2 years, seems happy and challenged, and enjoys the pieces. We also enjoy listening to the music, too!

This is a wonderful studio for studying classical fencing. The emphasis is not on the competitive nature of the sport but rather on "preserving and promoting in classical fencing and historical swordplay the true art, science and spirit of the sword." In fact, the name of the studio is taken is from their motto "In Ferro Veritas" which means "In the Sword is Truth." I must say, I don't entirely understand it all, but my 14-year old daughter really enjoys it, perhaps because she loves ideas of fantasy and adventure (something like Pirates of the Caribbean, maybe) and is a secret romantic at heart. Lessons are one to three times a week and are in groups. In addition, there is the option to take private lessons.

I find these Osho Meditations to be easy and very effective. Unlike many meditative techniques that require one to sit still over a period of time, many of these Osho Meditations are "active" and involve physical movements making it easier to relieve accumulated stress. This meditation group is fun and consists of dancing, meditating and listening to Osho Discourses. Yum. Lots of good vibes and good energy here.
The Osho Meditation Freedom Group meets regularly at the Cayuga Heights Center for Wellness and Healing Arts, 903 Hanshaw Road, 2nd. floor, Suite 202, at Community Corners
near the Triphammer Mall, Ithaca, NY 14850.
For details on times and dates, send your contact information, (include your name and email address) to oshoithaca@yahoo.com. Your name will get added to the email list and you will be notified of up-and-coming meditations and events. * Note: This list is private and will only be used to inform you about Osho Meditations in Ithaca.
All are welcome, including those who are new to meditation. If you want to relieve stress, improve your health and outlook on life, etc. etc. I highly recommend these Osho Meditation classes. Enjoy!!!

Cornell is really different from the other Ivy League schools in that it is a combination of a private AND a state university (even including a school of hotel administration)--- so there is a really good combination of students from all walks of life (i.e., not a preponderance of privileged, white, prep school students). They also have an top-rated College of Architecture, Art, and Planning and a superb College of Engineering. The campus is up on a wide, open hill (think incredible sunsets) and is very connected to the outdoors, which to me felt like a nice contrast to many of the other, cramped, walled, urban universities on the East Coast.

Surprisingly enough, especially to me, M&T has branches outside of Ithaca. I've seen a couple in New York City . I would say that M&T is a good bank to have if you are in Ithaca. In New York, it wouldn't be my first choice for banks, simply because it isn't big enough and convenience becomes a factor. However, in Ithaca, it is one of the major banks and is quite good. For new students, check out their booths during orientation. They have pretty laccount options and you can usually swing some sort of free gift or money for opening an account.

More 1 year ago
I have no idea whether the instructors for this company are any good, but this is the kind of customer service you can expect from the Big Red Bell Driving School. I called to set up an appointment for a particular time. I live in a house with its own driveway, so I waited in the house for someone to ring the doorbell, while I got chores done around the house. By 15 minutes after the person was supposed to show up, I left a message on their voicemail (no one ever answered the telephone directly when I called) expressing my frustration with the no-show. I got an angry message later in the day saying that the person came to my house and waited outside for 20 minutes and then left. This may or may not be true, because the driver did nothing to signal to me that he was there. I called and left a message saying that if the person came, then he should have knocked on the door or called with a cellphone, given that I was at home WAITING the whole time and an additional hour after that. He called back and started yelling at me that he told me when we set up the appointment that no one would come to the door, which he certainly did not tell me. He yelled that they never leave the car and that they don't carry cellphones and that as far as he's concerned, I owe him $50. I responded that I do not owe him $50, and I began to explain that it was perfectly reasonable for me to expect the driver to make some attempt to let me know he was out there, especially given that there is a driveway with no cars in it right next to the house. The guy on the phone never let me explain though, because he started yelling again and saying that I have a "problem" and that I can call another driving school. I plan to do just that, and I recommend that you do the same.
