This independent bookstore has a huge selection with 60,000 carefully chosen used books. It's where I go first when I am looking for a used book. The store also seems to have a social conscience--- there are many notices posted of political goings-on in Ithaca. And, there is a cafe upstairs. The best thing is that it is conveniently located right there on The Commons.

The Schwartz Center for Performing Arts puts on many performances every year. They range from plays to dance recitals and are always very professionaly done. The variety of plays is a great feature, you can see Shakespeare plays and also plays that were written recently by playwrights, such as Cornell Undergraduates.
The center itself is relatively new and the theater is very nice. Tickets are not that expensive. Going to a show there is a great experience and I would highly recommend it as a nice alternative to the usual partying.

The Cinemapolis is located in the Commons. It only has two screens and doesn't necessarily show mainstream pictures that you would find playing in the big multiplex's. It is a very cute theater though and you can find many treasures there. I saw "My Big Fat Greek Wedding" there and had a great time. The Cinemapolis takes you back to older movie theaters and away from the big chain theaters that you see nowadays.
I would definitely recommend checking out the movies that are playing there because you can find some very good alternative or smaller distribution movies playing that you would miss otherwise.

The Science Center is a great place to go with kids when you need an activity that will bring many ages and levels together. The Science Center has many activities geared to all ages. They have an outdoor area where activities that illustrate Physical concepts and where they can be explored. They have a preschool play area and even an area for kids under 12 months. There are often special displays or events sponsored by the Science Center. They also have expanded in the last few years and added many services. A great place for all ages!

Hickey's has the best selection of sheet music in Ithaca and is THE place to go for all of your music needs (including classical, pop, jazz, etc). They also carry a lot of instrument accessories. The staff is very friendly and helpful and will help you find whatever you need. They also rent electronic pianos and other instruments. Hickey's is located in the Fall Creek area in an old renovated factory building across from a nice park. It's easy to walk or ride your bike there from anywhere in Ithaca, but there is also free parking available.

Toko Imports is a cool shop with just about every kind of percussion instrument, gong, and bell you can possibly (or not) imagine. And more! They also have a good selection of hats--- maybe to get in the mood? Anyway, I found a nice, yellow beret there once. The owner is super friendly and helpful. This is a good shop to wander in when you're looking for a gift that is completely out of the ordinary. You definitely will find it here.

The Kitchen Theatre is a small space and can seat up to 73. The productions are always professional, always interesting, and sometimes intense. Because the theater is so small, it can feel as if one is a part of the play at times. This is fine if one is comfortable with live theater, but can also be disconcerting. Much of one's experience depends on the material and whether one is used to watching the action of a theater production live up close or at a distance. There are a range of productions for all ages all year long, including great comedy and great drama, as well as experimental productions. Highly recommended.

Express yourself through your masterpieces. Dynamic Patterns is located in Ithaca, NY. It is a pottery studio where you can create wonderful gifts for your family, friends or yourself. They have a large variety of bare pottery. You simply select your favorite and start painting. There are staff members on hand to help you with your creative questions. After you have finished your painting, they set the color and you just have to come pick it up. I went here with my friends and spent an enjoyable afternoon creating a gift for our mentor. He loved the present because it was unique and specialized. I am certain you can impress your friends with these personalized, thoughtful gifts. It is also a great place to discover a hidden talent or just a nice place to have some fun. Hint: Note that the colors tend to darken after they set.

Like the Cinemapolis located on The Commons, Fall Creek Pictures is run by the 7th Art Corporation, a nonprofit organization "dedicated to providing a sophisticated community with the best in new international and independent cinema"-- and indeed it does. There are three screening rooms with seating capacity of 160, 93, and 47. Their ticket prices are also lower than the mall prices -- Monday's are Cheap Nights when tickets are just $5.50 (there are also student discounts). Another bonus is that Fall Creek Pictures is located next to an excellent restaurant, Willow. Willow even offers a "Dinner and a Movie" special Tuesdays through Saturday.

Small World Music is a bit hard to find but definitely worth the look.* This small space is big in the eclectic quality of selection, especially in the rock, jazz, and blues genres. We’ve usually managed to find what we want. If what we want isn’t in stock, Steve, the owner, will order it. He also gives excellent suggestions for alternatives if you need a gift RIGHT NOW. Often you’ll come out of Small World Music with something a bit more interesting. Small World Music also carries used CDs.
*Clue: Go one block west of the Taste of Thai Express restaurant on State Street and look in between the red and blue houses… it’s in the back of the lot in what was once a garage of some sort.
