Marshall Fields

If New York has Macy's, Chicago has Marshall Fields. I am so glad they keep this store alive ! This department store at the heart of state street is a great place to shop, even though the pricing can be high, but if they do the sale, you still can get a pretty good deal from past season goods. I like how they decorate their window during Christmas time, really pretty and has become a wonderful tradition of Chicago. more

This store definitely holds a special place in the hearts of many Chicagoans. Going to see their wintertime window display and Christmas tree, is part of my own family tradition. Over the years, we've seen a real drop in the quality of their merchandise. THis was once a company that prided themselves on top quality, and their prices reflected that. You can still spend hundreds on a pair of jeans, and they will probably be some really great jeans. But I can no longer say they have the TOP quality. Years ago, if you saved your money to get your oriental rug, or bedroom set, or Christening outfit for your newborn at Marshall Field's, that kind of held some merit. And you were sure that the product would last forever. Nowadays, there are great ways to get high quality at cheaper prices, and Field's isn't in a league of its own. In fact, it's becoming a little ordinary. Anyway, Macy's bought them out and they are continuously losing that old spirit. more

Marshall Fields is a long standing Chicago Tradition. Their mall stores always carry tons of great clothing. They don't carry the most exclusive designer clothing, but very close to it. I have always found their customer service to be super accomodating. We used their wedding registry and were quite pleased with the online registry. If you want a real treat, head to their flagship store in downtown Chicago. 9 wonderful floors of merchandise for browsing. I highly recommend taking a fanciful tour of the furs department. You can also find some really nice home furniture and decor items. And have lunch at the cafe - it's a nice break from all that shopping. more

If you're looking for the premiere shopping experience in the city, Marshall Field's is the place to be. From the luncheons and tea served daily in the Walnut Room to the countless floors of merchandise, Marshall Fields is Chicago's department store. MF will soon be taken into the Macy's conglomerate, but for now, it maintains a unique place in Chicago's shopping landscape. Make sure you look for the beautiful mosaics on the ceilings of the nine-story building. more
