Best

Wally's was the reason that I moved to the south end! Being able to walk over any night of the week and have amazing music, company, and drinks- I couldn't ask for anything more!"

Worst

Arriving at the club on a Saturday night our group of 2 are told the club is full and asked to wait outside until people left. Meanwhile a group of 2, 4 and another 2 are let in d...

Cool Hole in the Wall Place for Jazz 4/18/2006

I had heard so many good things about Wally's, so my husband and I finally decided to visit. We went on a Saturday night and the place was entirely too crowded! The music and the ambience were great though (if I imagined less people there). The cocktail waitress literally had to squeeze through the crowd to get people drinks. I definitely want to visit on a week day to get a better feel for the place. I have a feeling there might be some cool jazz to be had there. more

Got the Monday night blues 11/23/2005

I love a place that's completely packed on a rainy Monday night. There's not that much around Wally's, so if the place draws that kind of crowd when the weather's foul, you know if has something going for it. The blues were great - the band came on a bit late, but made up for it with quality. I'll definitely be returning to check out some of the other nights (latin jazz is very cool, I'm told). Just a block south of the Orange Line Mass Ave stop. more

Editorial
  • The Scene
Joseph L. Walcott founded this hideaway club in 1947 (across the street from its current location), and set the standard for the club's dedication to music by hiring bands 365 days a year. Wally's status as a local jazz institution is disproportionate to its cramped quarters. Visitors to this funky neighborhood hangout should expect to have their ribs jabbed by various elbows throughout the evening.

    The Draw

Many of the budding jazz and blues talents at the Berklee College of Music play Wally's, and they're often more interesting than some of the better-known local acts. There's no cover, which is a real treat, especially since most bands have a tendency to let loose with extended solos and jams. The bar makes its money from the well-stocked bar, and no food is served.
