This recently expanded location of Newbury Comics now has a huge selection of new and used CDs as well as music and movie themed T-shirts, buttons, posters, and other paraphernalia. There's also a wide selection of comic books and books on pop culture. The 'wicked cheap' CD selecction is always worth a look and the used CD section has become one of the more comprehensive around without its own store. Very crowded store on weekends, but you can't beat the prices on new releases. Sign up for their email list (they don't spam you) and get coupons in your email nearly every week.

In this digital world we live in, what is the point of keeping anything but your favorite CD's? You bought it, so make a copy of it for yourself, and then get rid of it. CD SPINS will offer you more than other places too...sometimes it's only a buck or two a cd, but who else will buy another copy of Hello Nasty? Seriously, when I sold my Chili Peppers, Beastie Boys, and Cake collections I had a big night at the bar. If you intend to buy more music, they tend to offer about 30% more for store credit as opposed to cash. Up to you.

I am all about book stores, music stores, and toy stores. This rates high on my list as a music shop. I have found stuff here that I was unable to find every where else, even at similar music shops. Sometimes I sell used stuff here, the pay relatively well but CD Spins pays more. Definitely fun to stop in and check things out.

this little renting store next to May's Cake House is full of videos and music for chinese families who would like to have a night's entertainment. You can rent videos in chinese (mandarin & cantonese) as well as vietnamese. It provides monthly/yearly renting prices for regular customers. The store also sells cute gadgets (Sanrio) and other stuff.

Virgin Megastore (the old Tower Records to the locals) is a great store - with 3 floors of music and excellent live performances in their cafe on the 3rd floor on the weekends from local Berklee students and others in the area. The techno/house section is my favorite on the 2nd floor in the left corner behind the escalators, great assortment and when you catch a sale, the prices are great. I also love the international selection on the 3rd floor, although I wish they stocked more Italian, Turkish and French pop music, I was still happy to see some of my favorites like Thailia, Nek, Laura Pausini, Paris Combo, etc. Virgin has a lot of DVDs, some gifts and a light assortment of books, although their book section isn't arranged or stocked too well. Over all, I'm really happy with the store and love the listening stations - great!
(edited 12/20: this store closed to be replaced by best buy. so sad)

I prefer the Borders to the Barnes & Noble at Downtown Crossing - it's bigger, the selection is better, and they have kiosks where you can look up things yourself without wating at a customer service desk (an important feature in a crowded store). Their magazine selection is terrific and so is the massive cookbook section. There's a little cafe with some good teas and mediocre coffee drinks and pastries. The lines here are huge at lunchtime and right after work, and are not to be believed almost anytime during the Christmas season. Strategize accordingly if you are in a rush. The line moves pretty fast but if you're just here for a magazine you might want to go elsewhere.

This awesome music store recently moved a block away from its former location to a cleaner and more spacious location right next to the symphony stop on the green line. They specialize in instrument sales as well as expert repairs. The prices are steep but you won’t see a cooler and more impressive store around for all of your horn needs.

This Guitar Center is a pretty big showcase on Commonwealth Ave. Driving by you can't help but notice the huge immortalizations of all the classic guitar heroes (Hendrix, a bearded and overalled EricClapton, SRV) and even some other music icons like Ringo Starr. Inside is your typical collection of new and used gear, maybe slightly larger on the used collection than some other locations due to Boston's transitory population. They're a name brand and a warranty, it's where I bought my headphones, and where I'll bring them when they break.

Moon Wave is a nice shop with a lot of Asian style gifts that would appeal to young kids and girls. They have a lot of sanrio and other very cute looking Japanese cartoon characters' gifts. They also sell new CD Albums from Hong Kong, China, and the rest of Asia. There are also a lot of posters available in store.
