Alabama Booksmith is a wonderful independent bookseller in downtown Homewood. They have an excellent selection of books of all varieties in a cozy environment with a fire place and complimentary refreshments. Employees are well read and helpful; reviews of employee favorites are published on their website regularly. The store sponsors book clubs and public book readings and signings.

There is something about the smell of Barns & Nobel. I am instantly taken up a notch when I walk into one. Honestly, I don’t care if the smell is a natural side effect of so many books in one place, or if they pump it in artificially. I just hope they never change it.
I usually hang out at the Barns & Nobel at the Summit. It’s a great place. I can browse for hours, find something I like, and sit in one of many easy chairs scattered through the walls of books. When I get a little tired, no need to worry, there is a Starbucks located in the store to perk me right up. And on top of that, they serve Cheesecake Factory cheesecake – does it get any better? Yes, yes it does. They have a great outside patio area. The only thing better than sitting and reading in an easy chair is sitting and reading outside on a cool sunny day.
Once you get addicted to this place, I recommend investing in one of the $25 membership cards. You can use for anything in the store including the Starbucks items and save on every purchase. Plus they constantly sent you coupons by email which I end up using quite often.

More
The Little Professor has been around for years in Birmingham, and continues to serve Birmingham well. However, as Barnes and Nobel and Booksamillion expand and as the internet makes getting hard to find books alot easier, locally owned bookstores mostly have their purpose in providing staff recommendations. Unlike the Alabama Booksmith that frequently has book signings from well known authors, the Little Professor doesn't offer too much other than staff advice.

I absolutely LOVE this location of Books a Million. Like most stores they have a Thomas the Train table in the kids section but it feels more inviting at this store. My daughter and I spent an hour there a few weekends back looking at books and playing on the train table. Because they have a sitting area by the train table I was able to read a little while she played. The usually have most books in stock and it is easy to navigate.

Snoozys is a great place for college students to sell their used books and buy new ones. They have great prices on both new and used books for almost any subject you can think of. It is best not to wait around because you may miss a really good deal on a book you need.

Although this place is small, it is really worth it. You know you've found something special when you walk in the door. If a famous author comes to town, chances are this is the place they go for signings (Anne Rice was recently there, for instance). The staff is very friendly and helpful, they're always willing to help you find that special book. The prices are reasonable, as well.

Reed Books, subtitled the "Museum of Fond Memories," is a most peculiar place. You walk upstairs into an non-air-conditioned space and find yourself wandering amidst an astounding array of pictures and photos, magazines and books, published and no-longer-published items. Old schoolbooks of the "Dick and Jane" variety sit alongside old Life magazines. This is a place to search through, the organization is loose, not strict. You will find some strange and miraculous gifts for others, sports and war memorabilia and old children's books are especially interesting here.

Books & Co. is at Brookwood mall. They have the best selection of books in Birmingham. The atmosphere is very nice, reminiscent of Barnes and Nobles, before they turned B&N into the Wal-Mart of bookstores. Of course, because it is a Books-a-Million company, the resident coffee shop is Joe Muggs. Joe Muggs, is not the place to get a mocha, or any espresso based drink. They do have good regular coffee, though. I like to swing through a Starbucks on my way there.

My family and I like to shop here. The kids sit in the back of the store watching episodes of Veggie Tales and playing with toys while the adults look around for that perfect gift or a good christian book.

This is a nice cute little bookstore that is very nice. Crosshaven reminds you of an old fashioned little book store. This is a good change from the big chain stores. This store is hidden over the hill from the Summit. You gotta check out Crosshaven.
