It's hard to resist the temptation to go back to West Gray Cafe. It's convenient, cheap enough, and sometimes you're driving by at 3am and need pancakes AND french fries. However much I'd prefer to support the independent business, though, service and food are both better at Denny's, 59 Diner, El Rey or other late night options. Despite the quaint neighborhood, dining here feels like you're at a highway truckstop. Nothing is bad, simply mediocre, but without the exorbitantly cheap prices to make up for it that you find at so many Mexican places. In short, I can't recommend it, but I also cannot warn you against it. Like the unloved cat that serves to keep mice away, it's simply there, because sometimes its needed. Pros: 24 hours Cons: Mediocre food and service more

Outstanding Service Mediocre Food 3/29/2010

If you really don't care much about the food you are eating but want great service then definitely stop by. It's a very warm and inviting cafe setting. The service was spot on with a very friendly waitress who was attentive throughout my stay there. (I'm pretty sure it wasn't my wit and charm that kept her coming back.) I love to eat breakfast anytime of day so I ordered a plate that had 2 eggs, 2 pancakes, 2 sausage, and 2 bacon. It was no longer than 5 minutes and I had my order. Everything tasted appropriate and was fresh but the portions were a little small. Well, maybe not small just not equal to the price. Unfortunately the iced tea was probably my favorite part of the meal. I may return to try out a different menu item to see if it fares better, but I'm in no rush. Pros: Friendly Cons: Portions more

Awful service 12/31/2008

I've passed by this place many times and always saw a good crowd on their patio. So I finally decided to try it on a Thursday afternoon. When I first walked in the place, my first impression of the place was that it looked run down but I never usually judge a book by its cover. No one greeted us so we asked one of their employee if we should seat ourselves and they just said yes and ran off with no smile. The place didn't look too busy, there were plenty of empty table, however, they did seemed to be short on staff. After 10 min of sitting down without a server to greet us I decided to get up and ask for a menu. When I asked a staff member, the first thing that came out of her mouth was there is a 30 minute wait for food....no 'hi, how are you'....no 'I will be right with you'....just a cold 'there is a 30 min wait for food'. Not feeling welcome at all, we decided to not even look at the menu and left. I understand that this is not a 5 star restaurant but I've been to plenty of small, in the hole restaurant and received great service. There is no reason to come here. Pros: None Cons: Service! Needs to retrain their staff to be friendlier and more welcoming to patrons. more

Terrible Service 7/18/2007

I went here with a friend a couple of weeks ago during the day when it was not very busy. Since I only had coffee, I thought I would go back with my partner for a late night breakfast. The service was horrific. The waitress was downright rude, and gave us an attitude when we asked for silverware. Furthermore, when she FINALLY brought our food out, my meal was not edible. The sausage was burnt beyond description, and the biscuits appeared as though they had been microwaved. When I asked if I could send it back in exchange for another item off the menu, she rudely informed me that I would be charged extra. No apologies for the poor food quality, no effort to correct the issue - nothing. We will NOT be back. By the way, I have never left a review online - but I'm really disappointed in this place. It has so much potential - perhaps with a few changes in staffing they might achieve a successful business. Pros: Great location Cons: Poor service and poor food quality. more

Cute Old House, Full of Character, Loyal Patrons & Good Food 6/27/2007

We take all of our out of town guests here for either a home cooked breakfast or a late night meal. They are open 24hrs and the quality of food is the same no matter what time of day it is! The Biscuits & Gravy are my husband's favorite in the city and he is a good-old-country-boy! The prices are so low that you shouldn't expect 5 star service, but the ladies are still VERY nice and friendly! This resturant gives the midtown area a place where you don't feel like you have to look your best to go there. THANK GOD! Pros: Biscuits & Gravy, no snobby feeling here plenty of parking, cheap eats more

Just Plain Bad!! 7/25/2006

OK, So everything about my experience at The West Gray Cafe was HORRIBLE!! The place looks Dingy, The table tent on the table next to us was Dusty!! There was a man asleep on the porch. Well we were real hungry so we did order, if we had known that a med rare Cheeseburger and fries would take 30 minutes...we would have walked out! When the burger came out is was past well done very crisp infact!! I never speak out or send back food but I did and we left!! Never again will I dine here or I suggest you do!! When we went in there were about 3 other tables sat...The service was slow, to Slow for only 3 tables to be in use!! I suggest if it is late and you are hungry...DO NOT EAT HERE! Pros: none Cons: everything more

Okay food, awful service 1/7/2005

A group of my friends went to this cafe for dinner once last year. Our waitress appeared irritated at our presence from the start. She only came over to our table three times during the meal: once to take our order, then to serve our meal, and then to give us our bill (and even that seemed like too many times to this waitress). Not once did she come to check if we needed refills on our drinks or if we needed anything else. I was so displeased with the service that I almost refused to tip, something I've never done before. The food was okay, but I'll never go back to this place since the service was beyond appalling. more

The service is great. The food is great. The decor is NOT GREAT. It is under new management as of 12/01/02. (I know, cuz I go ALL THE TIME for breakfast. It's GREAT) They say it's going to look better, very soon. It's a cafe. It's very good at BEING a cafe. Pros: food, service, value Cons: decor, gets smoky more

very cool, funky place! 10/27/2002

West Gray Cafe is a cute little place! It has a patio (PERFECT this time of year!), a bar, good food, and it's open 24 hours a day! It's the best breakfast spot in town! They have party facilities upstairs, complete with a stage. Good for business meetings, weddings, private parties with live music, karaoke- they can help you out! Great location. Good food. Good service. I like it. Pros: always open, good food, patio Cons: it's not trendy. yet. more

Editorial
  • In Short
Situated between downtown and Montrose, the cafe is a hodge-podge of furniture and knickknacks. Most mornings, suits power-breakfast over biscuits and gravy alongside blue-collar workers attracted by early bird specials. A more bohemian clientele stops in for dinner. The round-the-clock breakfast menu includes eggs, pancakes, sausage and grits. The rest of the menu continues in that country-casual vein, with chicken and dumplings, chicken-fried steak and smothered steak. Homemade cobblers and pie are worth a late-night visit on their own.
