Van Michael Salon

I've been to salons all over the metro Atlanta area and about 7 years ago, I went to Van Michael for the first time and have yet to go anywhere else since! Unfortunately, recently moving to Portland has put me on the search again for a colorist and stylist... having yet to find anyone here, I fly back to have my hair done at Van Michael. Joey is the goddess of color. She's kind and beautiful, listens to what I have in mind, shares her opinion... and voila! Magic! You will love, love, love her! I've yet to recommend anyone to her that hasn't. Recently, I saw Rob for my cut and he's a genius. It's the best hair cut I've had in 29 years. Unfortunately, I went to Van Micheals at 39 West Paces Ferry Road Northwest, Atlanta, GA 30305, to get a spiral perm with KHIA MCLENDON and I ended up paying a total of $404.92; I ended having a half of my hair completely straight and after talking to the manager I was told that KHIA did not feel like helping me because she is one of the top ones and she knew what she was doing. I had my hair colored by a young lady today named, Tong. Never before have I had such a fantastic color job done. It is beautiful. My hair was in such a mess where I had tried to do it myself and another salon had tried to fix it. Thank you so very much Tong. I will continue coming to your salon for her to do my color. If you are the kind of person who just wants to sit down and trust the person doing your hair, Nilan is perfect for you. She always as an idea of what would look good on me and I never have to worry about not liking the cut. Great conversations and good people watching are added bonuses. My friend tried to help me save money by coloring my hair with color from CVS. It was a disaster! I live near the Highlands so I booked an appointment with Van Michael and was able to get in with Jyll. Not only did she fix my color but it looked better than it did before I tried to do it at home and it felt healthy too. I am hooked. I highly recommend Jyll. Pros: Very talented colorist. I started seeing Lexi for color and Mekaylah for a cut at the Highlands location about a year ago, and I'm impressed every time I go into the salon. Lexi always explains everything she's doing so I'm not expecting anything that's not possible for my dark dark brown hair, and she's taken me fiery red back to brown and everything in between in that time. Mekaylah is a great haircutter, reasonably priced and always on time! She handles my very thick, wavy hair with ease! I've lived in a few southern cities and Van Michael's has to be the most consistently excellent salon I've been to. I see Rob for my haircuts and Stuart for my color. I really can't say enough about those guys. They feel more like friends to me at this point. I guess the only negative thing I could say about them is that it's damned hard to get in with them unless you book an appointment in advance. I suppose that's the price you pay for being in demand! I have been going to Van Michael for over 5 years now and their customer service has only been getting worse and worse. When you go to pay, their front desk staff is very rude as if you are a nusiance. It really leaves a bad taste in your mouth. The person whom has cut my hair doesnt even listen to me anymore about what I want and makes me wait for 30-45 minutes EACH time. My time is not valued at all. I have been a fan of Van Michaels for awhile but my colorist left so I haven't been to a Van Michael in about 1.5 years. Since i moved to VH, I naturally choose VM to do a cut and color. Great colorist, great brow wax but then it was time for a cut. No was the theme for the day. I brought a picture that was insulted, I was told, ""well I am not sure what we do about this"" to my cowlick, I didn't want the straight flat iorn look and when I asked about ""sprucing it up"" after I got the flat iorn look, I was told ""well you don't want to do that as you could then damage my hair"" instead of just spritzing my hair and adjusting, and finally I was SHOCKED when we were done as I looked atrocious and the response was ""go home and play with it"". You are kidding right? I thought that a stylist was supposed to style. more

Insultingly expensive + unfriendly front desk personnel = 2 stars. Sorry Van Michael. If you don't improve the customer experience and value, someone else is gonna beat you to it. more

Van Michael used to be known for the best stylists and colorists in the south. Unfortunately, those days have passed. Over the past few years and continuing today, they have lost their best talent due to their changing corporate attitude. They used to have one of the top training programs in the business but this too has fallen into obscurity. There is no longer any innovation. The client experience has become mediocre at best and the service has become overpriced. There are many other salons in Atlanta who still value your business and have much better talent, much of it from the early days of Van Michael. I urge you to seek them out. My boyfriend arranged for me to have my haircut with a ""top stylist"" here about a month ago for my birthday. I have beautiful, long, layered hair... Well, I had that. I went in for a new STYLE and was specific that I didn't want too much length to be lost unless absolutely necessary. I told him I'd be OK with 1-2 inches, but that's all. He said, ""Oh, we're not even going to take off that much!"" He proceeded to spin me around and show me exactly how much he was going to cut off - Fine, it wasn't much at all! I relocated to Atlanta 3 years ago & I have been in search for a hair salon that has excellent stylists, are courteous & most importantly a salon that knows how valuable your time is. I found all of this at Van Michaels in Buckhead. As a Black woman, I was skeptical at first, but to my shocking surprise it is the best salon that I've ever been to since moving here. I have visited several times with different stylists & my visits were all great. The best thing of all, no waiting!!! If your appointment is at 5:00pm, they mean 5:00pm. Im in & out within an hour. I received a chair massage, which was so good. Mick did the best cut ever. I've never cut my hair short & was nervous at first and didnt even know how i wanted it cut. He just said ""I'll take care of you"" and that he did, he went to work & the outcome was Fab-U-Lous!! Elyce & Juana are also very talented stylists, they were all great. I would definitely recommend this salon. Each stylist specializes in different things, which is also great. Im so glad I finally found a hair salon that embodies everything I want. I just moved to the area and went to the Highlands for the first time a couple weeks ago! My color before was HORRIBLE and Stuart fixed it! It looks soo good and I keep getting asked who did my color... and dont worry I am telling everyone Stuart. His asst. Quinn was awesome as well and very professional! What a GREAT TEAM... Went about a week ago for the very first time. I walked in, was nicely greeted, and then shown around the salon. Did not wait at all before I got started with Mark. He was great. I told him what look I was going for, and he told me how to get it. He even explained the science behind it, which is the first time any stylist has done that for me. My cut ended up exactly as I wanted it. They did not push any Aveda products on me, just asked me once at the register if I was getting anything else, which I did. I saw Courtney for years and she is a great stylist. Main reason I left was to find a new colorist. It can be pricey, depending on who you see. It is too bad that a salon with such talented stylists have allowed their reputation to substitute for overall salon service. I have gone off and on to the same stylist at VM since the original store opened in Buckhead. While I have been pleased with my hair cuts and stylist, the salon experience is always frustrating. The constant overselling of Aveda products and services, the long waits, and the disorganized/snobby staff don't make it very relaxing. And when I am paying $85 for a hair cut, I would prefer to leave the salon feeling better than when I walked in! No longer willing to fuel the VM (vanity machine!).
