Ho-Ho-Horrendous Service 12/19/2010

We had heard that the best bagels in the Nashville area were made at Star Bagel Cafe. Being New Yorkers and wanting good bagels to go with our lox, we gave the cafe a chance yesterday afternoon. (take out order of course) With three people behind the counter, initially I thought that would mean quick service...I didn't factor in that the staff was more interested in having conversations with themselves and other friends that happened to show up that day. I'm not sure if ""working extremely slowly with customers"" is a class that is given semi-annually or quarterly. Either way, the classes that the owner/management are giving are very effective as the service couldn't possibly get any slower. And to those who work counter jobs, tips are only for outstanding service. Tips are not a mandated part of that job. In regard to the three behind the counter Saturday and especially the long red haired woman that pretended to help us...she did not earn a tip. In fact, if I were her manager, I would tell her that she didn't even do enough to earn her hourly wage! I was asked, ""do you know how many bagels you want?"" Now if I don't know, and I'm the one ordering, who in the world can I ask?? That is a reflection of management hiring and training practice; definitely not finding the brightest bulb in the lamp store. In an economy such as we have in 2010, Star Bagel Cafe might consider working more on customer service to keep those that they have and maybe even gain a few more. That in combination of continuing to make decent bagels. I guess they have more bagels and more variety the earlier you go in the day. We were there in early afternoon and there were a few left of most kinds of bagels, not all. I will not go out of my way to get anything else from this establishment. I will not recommend them to anyone I know. I would love to hear back from the owner or manager. more

Attitude Comes from the Top Down 8/24/2010

Alright, I am mainly posting this in response to reviews about workers' attitudes. My experience with Star Bagel has generally been positive since moving to the area a couple of years ago. The food is delicious and the portions are generous. Yet, I can see what people are saying about the attitude there. One worker in particular starts out with a bad attitude, and I tip well anyway because a) she has to split it with her co-workers, who do good work and b) to prove a point to her that some customers are OK people. I have worked almost this same job at another place, and I can see both sides. Food service can quickly make you jaded, and customers who come in and act entitled have clearly never worked retail or food service and generally are out of touch with the real world. My contention is with the owner. Once, I accidentally called his cell phone, which is listed on the brochure as a catering number, and he patronizingly told me that I needed to call the store to place my to-go order - just downright annoyed that I had made the mistake. Once, I e-mailed to let him know that it was a real inconvenience that the store's phone number is not clearly posted on their homepage. He shortly replied that this was by design to increase online orders, and he didn't even pretend like he would consider to make a change. So he has a bad attitude and from that one experience, poor business sense: We won't post the phone number so that we get more business? Also, if he reads this, the staff told me directly that the online ordering was rarely used and makes it even less convenient for workers and customers alike. In conclusion, I've experienced the bad attitude but after dealing with the owner, I realize it must get passed down from the top. more

Attitude goes a long way too 5/18/2010

Worst customer service I have EVER had! I can't imagine how you could have an order in writing with almost two weeks notice and within 24 hours of delivery tell your customer you can't deliver! That is CRAZY! You should put your delivery minimum on the TOP of your menu NOT IN SMALL PRINT at the bottom. Thanks and be assured this company will NEVER use you for catering. This will be on your reviews on line also. Pros: good food Cons: Worst customer service EVER! more

Worker Attitude 2/28/2009

Recently I have not appreciated the attitude from the workers, which is a shame because I am not sure if I will go back unless the attitude changes. By attitude I mean the workers seem to make it clear that they are entitled to being tipped. I understand tipping is important for wait staff who rely on their tips to make at least minimum wage since they only make ~2 bucks an hour. I also understand tipping at any place is proper when the service is good specifically during very busy business hours. Plus, with the economy being bad, I understand that we can all use as much as we can get. However, Star Bagel is a bagel/coffee house where workers are making at least minimum wage based on their hourly pay. Further, the past two times I have been to Star Bagel (& observed this newly developed righteous attitude from the workers) it has been practically empty. For example, the 1st time I experienced a worker's bad attitude was when I did not tip & immediately noticed a dramatic change in the worker's behavior from welcoming & friendly to indifferent and annoyed. The 2nd time (~ a week later), a different worker explicitly (& rudely) commented to me that I could just leave my change on the counter (hence as a tip) after I had dropped it & was apologizing for the mess and inconvenience. The overall attitude of the worker's that they are entitled to being tipped turns me completely off from this restaurant I have enjoyed so much in the past. Though the economy is bad, it is bad for everyone around, including the customer, who should not feel compelled to frivolously tip not so amazing service to workers already getting paid minimum wage during non busy business hours. I would have written this complaint on Star Bagel's own online web site but it turns out they do not have one. Instead, I just hope their business owner reads these reviews & inflicts a change on their worker's attitudes and service soon so that I may have confidence in going there again. Pros: Food is good. Cons: Service Workers explicitly expect tips and change their attitude if one is not given. more

the bagels and cream cheese options here are amazing. they have a great selection of salads and wraps as well. i love stopping here in the morning to sit down and grab a bite to eat with a friend or a date. the service is pretty quick so it won't take a ton of time out of your morning. Pros: timely service, good food more

My new favorite place! 10/22/2007

Star Begal is definitly my new favorite place with hot and cold sandwiches served on your choice of delicious bagels or a sourdough bread much like Scholotzsky's bread you can't go wrong. They also have salads, great soups, homemade muffins and pastries. My favorite so far is their fruit tea and pizza bagel. It's in a cozy little area across from McCabe's golf course with a out door seating area. The only thing bad about the place is limited parking, but I always seem to find a place I can squeeze into. Pros: Menu and fruit tea. Cons: Parking. more
