Great food, Great service, Great value 6/22/2012

Our daughter was in town - had not seen her since Christmas - so we celebrated with a special dinner at Sperry's. Wonderful meal and service. Though we had made a reservation for the dining room, we decided we'd rather eat in the lively bar area when we got there, and the hostess most graciously made this happen for us with a minimum wait. Got a great table and ordered a bottle of fantastic wine: Lucente Super Tuscan. Best deal on the wine list ($65 and tastes like a $150 wine), and Sperry's is the only restaurant in town where I've seen it on the list. My daughter has been on a vegetarian diet, so she ordered the big 16 oz NY Strip - and said it was the best thing she had eaten in months. My wife ordered the stuffed sole special and found it tantalizingly good. I had an ""Oscarized"" rib eye - which means it is topped with crab meat and Bernaise sauce. This is not on the menu, but any steak at Sperry's can be Oscarized, and I highly recommend it. Made a great steak even better. Service was unfailingly good throughout our meal. All in all, a wonderful evening. more

If You Don't Have a Man With You, Prepare for Rude Treatment 7/18/2011

This place is really almost comically unbelievable! It is a caricature of the Good Old Boy southern system of pompous and condescending servers coupled with truly average yet temendously overpriced food. more

Awesome 6/16/2010

We had a great time, There were four of us. The servers were attentive to our needs and wants. The wait for our reservation was a short wait. We sat down and had a wonderful dinner and conversation. The restaurant looked great. I was a little concerned about how the flood would affect the reopening. It was handled very well. It looked fantastic. Thanks for a great evening and great service for our friends who were from out of State. They too complimented every thing. The filets, were perfection, Twice baked potatoes Awesome as usual. Keep up the good work. Pros: friendly servers, convernient location Cons: parking/ busy night more

Never a letdown!!! 6/16/2010

It had been a while since my last visit to the Belle Meade Sperry's. As soon as I entered I remembered why I loved going here. We were greeted by a friendly hostess that hated to tell us that since we didn't have a reservation, we would be waiting a while. However, she informed us that we could sit at the bar and eat right away if we would like. I'm not a fan of sitting at a bar and eating, but thought we could have a drink or two while waiting for a table in the main dining room. We took a seat at the bar and were acknowledged right away by the bartender, Hillary. I asked for a wine list, but also asked if there was one that she recommended. She had me try one and gosh it was just what I was looking! We sat there talking to Hillary and a few people around us and decided that since we were having such a great time at the bar we wanted to stay there and eat. Hillary walked us through the specials as she set up a setting at the bar, which I was totally impressed by. It was treatment I?ve only known to get at the main table!! The special sounded great, but I decided to go with what I used to get?the filet (medium rare) Oskar style and sweet potato fries. Then, one friend ordered the salmon with creamed spinach and the other ordered a filet with a twice baked potato. We were all eating off each other?s plates. Everything was done to perfection and SO yummy!!! We were completely stuffed, but we can never pass up dessert. We ordered two sticky toffees because a guy beside us at the bar said we had to try it?OH WOW!!! Hillary poured something over it and it just melts in your mouth?we called it ooey gooey heaven! It was meant that we were to stay at the bar?fabulous service from Hillary, fantastic food and wonderful crowd to hang out with (no wonder this restaurant is always packed when I drive by and completely crowded when we got there!!), such a wonderful time that we stayed til almost closing!!!! Thank you Sperry?s?we WILL be back more often :) Pros: Great atmosphere, friendly staff, fantastic food Cons: Tight parking, busy/crowded more

What's the fuss? 4/24/2010

Sperry's has a very old reputation in Nashville, but I think it may be time to hang up the spurs. I very much liked the idea of going to a classic 70's style steak house, with copious amounts of great meat and rich sauces and whatever else, but I'm afraid the food is terrible. I felt like I was eating at a restaurant featured on an episode of ""Kitchen Nightmares"". The salad bar is right in front of the cooking area, but instead of seeing a busy kitchen, all you see is a guy throwing stuff in the microwave and another guy slapping steaks on a grill. They microwave everything: soup, sides, anything that needs to be heated. For an appetizer I got the Calimari. 13.95 and the bits of calamari were not even fried correctly. They were soggy, and it was what I would call a half portion. Carraba's has better calimari that is properly fried to a crisp for cheaper. The salad bar was OK, but hardly worth the 10.95 it costs on the menu. I should also mention that while this is a high end establishment, there were several little children running roughshod over the salad bar. They took an extremely long time, and one of the mothers forced one of her children to spit up something IN HER HAND, which she wiped on her plate, and then used that SAME HAND to get more stuff from the salad bar. Disgusting. The steaks are aged and cooked properly, but my NY Strip was very gristly and lacked seasoning. Certainly not worth 27 dollars. I very much doubt that it was a prime cut of beef. I ended up asking for A1, which I never do with a quality steak. The desserts were lackluster and severely overpriced. Avoid the sticky toffee pudding at ALL COSTS. It tasted like an overdone pancake soaked in very cheap maple syrup. I've had better desserts out of the frozen aisle, which is where I imagine this pudding came from. Also, be mindful of who you're going to be eating around. The place was PACKED with the geriatric white crowd. They probably like the ambiance and can't taste the food so well. I did not see a single non-white face in the establishment. Pros: Attentive service, old fashioned salad bar Cons: Ridiculous pricing, steaks are lousy, they have 4 microwaves more

Cost too much for the quality of food 1/22/2010

Found out that they already have fish cooked so you don't get it fresh.I had swordfish for $26. The plate had the swordfish with no condiments or decorations with a few sprinkles of pepper on top! It made the white plate look extremely large and weird to me. I have been to many restaurants and this was like a joke to get fish like this. It was tasteless also. Very tasteless and I was very disappointed. Pros: Nice tables with lamps Cons: Food does not match the price more

A Restaurant 12/26/2009

Too bad I can't publish my full review of this restaurant here. I have three times too many words than is allowed. This is another one of those ?first class? establishments in Nashville that no longer deserves its reputation, if it ever did. As you can tell from the other reviewers here, they are more impressed with the d?cor, the service, the booze and/or the location, than any honest, educated, worldly critique of the fare served. I suspect that most of those reviewing here are younger than thirty and were brought up on McDonald?s and Pizza Hut. Or they are older, devoted patrons from the ?hood, and have had their palettes numbed year after year to the inexorable crashing of the Sperry standards like the proverbial frog in boiling water. I have lived in Nashville for a number of years and whenever I heard of this restaurant, it was always in tones of hushed, almost whispered worship, like a prayer or wishing upon a star. My Italian friend, born and raised in Italy, and I ended up at this restaurant on Christmas. We had had a perfectly glorious mini repast at 1 808?s earlier (check out the reviews of this place. Genuinely superb!) earlier in the day but decided to see if all we?d heard about Sperry?s was true. [The space where I had to edit out all the details about the food we ordered.] We had no liquor and no dessert. I had a hot tea and my companion had only water. Our bill was almost $60. This is too shameful to endure. Somebody needs to fix Sperry's before it deserves its reputation again, if it ever did. Cons: The Food more

Great classic steak house 5/9/2009

Have been in Nashville for 3 years, looking for a good, classic (not a chain) steak house. This place has been around 35 years, is busy, friendly, a little noisy, but the kind of place we've been looking for. Everyone doesn't wear blue jeans (a nashville peeve of mine). Done all the high priced chains, but like this place the most. Pros: great food and service, wine list Cons: parking a little tight, price may scare some more

Too expensive for the amount and taste of food 1/19/2009

Too expensive for salmon and can find it at Wildwood or J Alexander for much less and get much more food. Sperrys only gives you one piece of salmon for around $22 and nothing else with it. Other places give you so much more and their salad bar is pitiful compared to a salad bar with many more choices. Actually Ruby Tuesdays salad bar is much better. Pros: nice atmosphere Cons: my friend's steak was not good an heard this before, no enough food in seafood for the cost more

Expensive, but great steaks. 7/26/2008

My wife and I double-dated here on Valentine's and thought the food and the service was wonderful that night. Steaks are definitely excellent and we had an overall great experience. It was a bit pricey but if you want to treat yourself to something good, I would definitely recommend it. more

Bankable Food 4/15/2008

I go to Sperry's quite often for business meals, the food has contuined to be consistant and very good quality. Great place to entertain for business, and the wine selection is always plentiful. only draw back is the price of the wine by the glasses are alittle high. Pros: Service, food quality, location, parking Cons: price, more

Excellent Food - Average Atmosphere 2/13/2008

My husband and I tried Sperry's for our third wedding anniversary on a Wednesday. We made reservations - but upon arrival, found that there were only 4 or 5 other tables occupied. We were asked at the door if we had a reservation - which was kind of funny. Pros: Excellent Food, Easy Parking Cons: Ambience, Crowded Seating more

Very Average 11/18/2007

My wife and I had heard raving reviews about this restaurant and decided to try it. The food was average and over price the service needs improvment. Once served our steak the server neverd checked to see if our steak was cooked correctly or checked on us at all. We have ate at many 5 star restuarants and were very disappointed. We did not find this as romantic experenice as we had hoped for. The tables were too small and placed too close to one another. Flemings gets the nod in every catagory and the service is impeccable. more

A SATISFIED APPETITE. 10/27/2007

WHAT A TOP NOTCH ESTABLISHMENT. Priced atliitle high, but you can justify the cost for the freshness and quality of the food. I really wish there was a way to make dining room not so crowded, but like me, I guess folks just can 't stay away. I always order the trout almondine which is perfectly wonderful. Servers do great job and are ""friendly"" not stuffy. Keep it up....BY THE WAY, THE BANANAS FOSTER IS UNBELIEVABLE! Pros: GREAT FOOD Cons: TABLE ON TOP OF EACH OTHER, ALMOST NO ROOM FOR SERVERS TO GET BY, SOMETIMES CUSTOMERS HAVE TO GET UP TO SET SERVERS PASS more

Great Place! 10/13/2007

This is the best steakhouse we've been to since moving to the area last year. I've been to almost every fine dining establishment in Nashville, and I am an expert on steaks. I ordered the bone-in filet and made a special request to have is stuffed with bleu cheese. It was one of the best steaks I've ever had. My boyfriend enjoyed his swordfish steak as well. I also enjoyed the salad bar. The lights were dim, which I appreciated. We sat in the bar area, and our waiter was great. He was informative and polite. I would definitely bring out of town guests to this restaurant. Pros: Great food and great service. Cons: A bit pricey, items served a la carte (in disguise), but well worth it. more

Our first visit won't be our last! I need more space to write.. 9/16/2007

My family had a wonderful experience and a fine meal. We were a party of six with reservations on a Sunday evening and were seated promptly. The entire staff was attentive. Our waitress was charming, and demonstrated excellent knowledge of the menu. All of her suggestions were spot on with our tastes. We started with a sample platter of appetizers at her suggestion. There was something for everyone without filling up prematurely, including shrimp cocktail, crab cakes, and Mushrooms Sperry. I don't eat mushrooms, but everyone else enjoyed them. The shrimp cocktail was chilled and lovely. Best crab cakes I've ever had. Pros: Service, Parking, Atmosphere, Menu Cons: Need reservations, Pricey for everyday dining, Not for small children more

Another Location 5/11/2007

I have eaten at your lovely establishment and was wondering if there was ever a thought of branching out? I own a love commercial property built in the 1900's that has 4 fireplaces and lots of character and thought I'd ask you would be interested in the Mt Juliet Area. We desperately need a specialty restaurant and that is what I feel you offer. Please let me know. I called your restaurant and ask this question and they suggested I send you this email. I am not trying to commercialize this area. We truly need your type of restaurant in our location. I appreciate your time. Brenda White more

We're not Belle Meade...but who cares?!? 4/27/2007

We reside across the border and try to patronize Sperry's for our anniversary each April. My husband and I on short notice were able to dine here last evening, and we were not dressed the part. Jeans was our attire and I did not feel we were second class citizens among all the suites. Sperry?s was extremely busy and we had a bit of a wait to place our order. Our only disappointment was the Bananas Foster could not be prepared at our table for we were seated in a small space. I even offered to move to the bar! Sadly, it was packed as well. more

Great traditional steakhouse 3/22/2007

The change to non-smoking has probably saved this fine restaurant from going out of business. Congratulations to someone for looking ahead and catering to a smarter clientele! Great food, great tradition! Pros: Great food, tradition, non-smoking more

Not a chain, unique atmosphere, friendly service since 1974 1/15/2007

Sperry's Restaurant has been in business in Belle Meade since 1974. It Is an independent family owned and operated business with a unique English Tudor atmosphere that can't be found anywhere else. Sperry's warm and comfortable atmosphere has three stone fireplaces and loads of beautiful stained glass plus a myriad of unique decorations collected over the years. The second location in Cool Springs is a duplicate of the original with the exception of multiple private dining rooms. The large copper salad bar is fresh and inviting, and not overstocked with too many items. Pros: Unlike any other restaurant in Nashville Cons: Crowded, need reservations more
