Allison of Chro.com says this place is one of the top 100 restaurants in Houston. I can totally agree! It serves the standard Tex-Mex that they started in H-town from the 1970's t...

You call this food? 9/13/2007

I have never had such a disgusting meal. Everything tasted the same (like expired cheese and burnt beans. Try at your own risk! This place is lacking in everyway food, service and decoration. more

Shame on you! 9/13/2007

Food: Horrible!! I think they served me cat with Velveeta.\r Decor: Tired, dirty and dismal. \r Cleanliness: This place needs to close! What is that smells outside near the kitchen???\r **This is the worst restaurant in Houston! more

YACK! 9/13/2007

I think the other positive reviews are family members of the owners. The food is horrible! Processed cheese and unidentified items in the entrees. In a city full of wonderful Mexican food this is the last place you should go! AWFUL! I was there at 12:30 and the place was less than half full. I think that speaks for itself! A fast food place is better than this! Pros: I didnt have to go directly to the restrrom Cons: meat is probably stray cats! more

Rude Rude Rude! 4/12/2007

We were initially drawn to this restaurant by its quaint, authentic charm, but driven out by such horrible and rude service. The food was authentic, though not all too palatable- just mediocre, but our waitress was quite (unneccessarily) rude. A wrong dish was brought to our table, and when the mistake was brought to the waitress' attention, she became very defensive. The situation did not call for such behavior. I could understand if the patron had made a huge deal about the mistake, but she simply pointed out the mix up and wanted what she ordered. The waitress (and other waitstaff) also spent much of the mealtime glaring at our table! The waitress must have been new, but all the other employees seemed understanding and accomodating. Isn't it sad how one bad server can ruin one's dining experience? It is obvious to say that this restaurant will never receive our service ever again. Cons: rude service more

Manager has to go! 4/11/2007

I wish I had read the review prior to my experience at Spanish Village. The manager is extremely rude and does not deserve patronage at this establishment. While trying to pay for my meal with a credit card, the manager confronted me with a slanderous tone when I attempted to scratch out account information on the receipt. Even thought they can legally have the account information, I feel I have the right to protect my information. Most establishments understand this and don?t provide account numbers on the receipt in the base case. I?m very suspicious of those places that do and even more so when they refuse to let you scratch out that information. I will not be returning this place and think the neighborhood would be better off without this place (or people) around. There are too many other great places in Houston to eat at to waste time where the customers are obviously not valued. Pros: Wait staff was fine Cons: Too bad they work for the Manager more

Great Tex-Mex and unique atmosphere 3/29/2007

My family has been coming here for years. Great enchiladas, and the frozen margaritas are far and away best in town--not made in a machine. I'm writing this review because I have seen some posted comments about the ""rude"" owner, which are not true. Yes, he is NOT running a bar--it's a restaurant and has been his family's business for more than 50 years (same location), so plan on coming to eat a meal (that's not unfair, is it?). The food is high quality and not expensive--cheese enchiladas to die for, suprisingly wonderful fried chicken (that takes a little longer to prepare), and teriffic atmosphere. It is not a sterile, chain, corporate cookie-cutter Mexican food outlet, but rather an authentic family owned and run, family-oriented, warm place to spend part of an evening. Many customers are regulars, like me, and sometimes it seems like being at a club. Admittedly, it's not in the best part of town and may require a little effort to get to, but they always have someone outside keeping an eye on things and there is a secure parking lot next to the restaurant. At the end of the evening, especially near closing time, the owner will walk you out to your car. I have always felt safe coming here, mainly because the owner really cares about his customers and wants to see you again. You will be back. Pros: Great Tex-Mex food, especially the enchiladas; the frozen margaritas; the atmosphere Cons: Not in a great neighborhood, but seems very secure more

terrible, wretched service 3/23/2007

the manager was a complete j_rk to me and my friends. we were trying to find a nice place to sit and chat for about 30 min or so...of the two coffee shops nearby, one was closed, the other had an event taking place, so, we stopped in spanish village. bad mistake. we got there maybe an hour before close, i would estimate there were 4 other tables occupied, so, not very busy. my friends had already eaten dinner, so, they expressed an interest in getting a drink while we talked and maybe i would eat. the manager would have none of it, going on and on about how he wasn't running a bar. fine, so, they got some sodas, i got an iced tea, and an appetizer. when we left, he was very abusive about us not having ordered an entree, and said that if we weren't going to order entrees, we shouldn't come back. fine then, we won't. j_rk. Pros: close to my house Cons: the manager is one of the rudest men i have ever had to deal with more

RUDE 2/22/2007

After explaining to the host (manager?) that only one in our group of 3 was going to eat and asking if it was still okay to take a table (even though it was slow) and he said yes, we were berated for only ordering an appetizer (which was more expensive than about half the entrees on the menu, and MUCH easier to prepare) and asked to only come back if we order an entree. DON'T WORRY, NEVER GOING BACK. Plenty of better restaurants in town who treat their customers with respect and appreciate the business. Pros: Rumors are the margaritas are good, but we didn't have one. Can't change my rating to N/A Cons: Terrible Service more

The gold standard of Tex Mex 9/21/2006

From the unique atmosphere to the flavor of the tacos create the best mexican food anywhere. Great family run operation. Would highly recommend to anyone looking for true mexican food. My family has been devoted followers (eaters) for 40 years. Pros: Food & Atmosphere Cons: Questionable part of town at night more

Great! 6/7/2006

Everything about this place is awesome!! Especially the service!! Love the margs and the food. Wish they were open every day! Pros: margarita, inexpensive, fun more

Classic Tex-Mex 5/25/2006

**01/02/09- Update****\r I had dinner here with my wife this evening, and as usual, the food and service was perfect, from the Queso to my Cheese Enchiladas, all was served fresh and hot!\r I stand by my earlier comment on the drinking without food pilicy, it truly makes for an enjoyable meal without all the noise of a bar crowd..(If I want that, I would go to a bar)\r If you are looking to have a nice quiet meal with family and friends, Spanish Village is the place!\r \r \r Spanish Village is one of Houston's classic Tex-Mex joints!\r I really like the no drinking without ordering food only policy, keeps all the college kids from just hanging out drinking there...\r \r The enchiladas are the BEST! Pros: Enchiladas, Salsa, Queso more

Horrible service... twice 5/15/2006

Me and my wife live nearby, and two years ago we decided to stop by for a snack. We had overpriced nachos that were not very good, and a couple of cokes. When we asked for the bill, the manager proceeded to come over and harrass us for only ordering an appetizer. He was extremely rude, and told us that we were not welcome to come in and only order an appetizer... the restaurant was not even half full! We recently tried this place again because we had heard about their great margaritas. However we were refused drink service as I have an out of state driver's license since I am a student. Even with alternate forms of identification, the owner would not serve us. We will never be back again. more

Amazing 1/14/2005

This place is amazing. The enchiladas are the best I have EVER had in my entire life! more

Great Drinks...Even Better Food 6/29/2004

This place looks closed from the street, but after living less than a mile from it for over 2 years, my wife and I tried it - really cool place. Food was excelent, frozen margarita's were amazing (not from a machine), and the service was quick and friendly. This place has been here since like 1953, and it shows why it is still open - wonderful. Pros: Margaritas, Queso, Enchiladas more

Yummy 5/12/2004

I love Spanish Village. I have been going there for years with consistently good food being offered. The staff remain very friendly and always welcome me back. I believe they have the best cheese enchiladas in town - hands down. For Tex-Mex you should look no further. Pros: Inexpensive, Delicious Food, Friendly staff more

Delicioso 12/18/2002

I have been going to Spanish Village for 22+ years. My kids grew up there playing in the phone booth. The family welcomes you and makes you feel at home. They'll just about make anything you like, except you MUST order food. That's a good thing because their margaritas are the best in the SW. Pros: best margaritas, great family place, the Medinas Cons: free range children, smokers more
