Best

Loved the atmosphere and food! I like how they put small twists on their menu items. I would recommend sitting on the porch balcony for dinner if it's nice out.

Worst

Rockford's house salad is probably the best salad I've ever eaten in my life. However, it's way too expensive! Pros: great salad Cons: expensive, slow service

Old school still cool... 6/30/2005

This is the oldest bar on Glenwood South and it is still the original. My huband and I go here often and always have a good time. Great prices. Service is good. Super bar!!! Pros: bar, prices more

one of raleigh's treasures 3/7/2005

The Rockford proves that Raleigh is not just an up and coming city for yuppie pretendous snobs, it is for young creative people as well. Me and my wife go there all the time, it is a perfect alternative from the norm. They have healthy, inexpensive sandwiches and dishes that are great and the best martini's in town. The last couple of times we went however, the service has been not so good. There is a couple of new servers and they werent very good but hopefully that will be addressed. It also can be WAY too crowded on weekend nights so go early and take your time. Without the crowd it really is a cozy, cool place....one that Raleigh needs more of. Pros: food, ambience and location, prices Cons: crowded weekends, small bar more

No Lemon Drop 1/11/2005

As suggested on this website, I ordered a Lemon Drop. However, the waitress and bartender did not know what this was. I ended up with a shot of vodka and a splash of lemon juice. Needless to say I wasn't looking to have a shot of vodka with my dinner. more

Rockford - not worth the time 1/6/2005

Recently I went with a small group of friends and we were told it would be a 1 hour wait. We stood around the crowded bar, & continued to get pushed out of the way by the irritable staff. After TWO HOURS of waiting we were seated. The owner started to set our table. He laid out napkins in front of me, & put the silverware on one of them, and I passed it down & he bit my head off - said he wasn't done, & that I needed to just let him do it & give it back. Well, I can tell you, I'm not paying anyone, & CERTAINLY NOT THE OWNER of a restuarant to speak to me that way, particularly AFTER A 2 HOUR WAIT. I left the restaurant, & the Rockford will never again see a penny from me. The customer service is deplorable. Cons: , wait time more

continues to go downhill 6/17/2004

I don't know if it's attributable to the Glenwood South revival or what, but the Rockford continues to get unnecessarily sassy with each successive visit. The food continues to be decent and well-priced, and the bar is allright. However, service continues to decline, which is strange considering the fact that most of the wait/bar staff has been there for several years (Rockford must give its employees health insurance-that's the only thing I can figure). The last time we were there, one of the waitresses all but threw a hissy fit when a couple we were meeting pulled some chairs up to our table, which is pretty standard convention at most restaurants that I've been to (then again, I'm from DC, not Raleigh, the city that never sleeps). I hope that Rockford will re-invest itself collectively in better wait staff/customer relations, because they've slipped considerably in that department Pros: good food, good prices, nice decor Cons: , decline in service more

happy and healthy 7/23/2003

I agree!!! This joint is always healthy and happy. Food is excellent and everything is CHEAP! I go at least once a week and they only turn music up after hours. This place is the original in a now very trendy neighborhood. GO NOW!!! Pros: value, value, great drinks more

What a great hole . . in the wall 7/22/2003

Great Food/Great Service. Everything and everybody looked happy and healthy. I agree they need a bigger selection of sides. Only Down side is the place is on the small side with tables in the middle of doorways and the music (Jazz on Speed, the night we went) was WAY TOO LOUD, and I'm not that old... Pros: Great Food, Great Service Cons: Way, Too, loud more

Great Place! 2/4/2003

Casual, home-like atmosphere. Great decor, excellent, exceptionally fresh foods. I thought the prices were good for dinner. Loved the eggplant sandwich thing with fresh mozzerella. Servers were very accomodating. My only suggestion...a better selection of sides. more

woefully underrated 1/7/2003

distraught to see the low user rating on one of my favorite restaurants anywhere. this is a great little (independent and local!) place with a fun menu (lots of choices for vegetarians and the like...) and a well stocked bar (good choices of beer, wine and liquor). i take any friends visiting town by here, and they're never disappointed. not to be missed. Pros: inexpensive, not a chain, choices Cons: small, smoking more

Great salad, too expensive 12/22/2002

Rockford's house salad is probably the best salad I've ever eaten in my life. However, it's way too expensive! Pros: great salad Cons: expensive, slow service more

Best for 1st dates, and 2nd dates, and.. 12/20/2002

You'd never know the perfect dining experience is just through that unassuming door on Glenwood. A wonderful place to enjoy great food and quiet conversation with friends. My girlfriend and I just can't get enough. What a refreshing change from Raleigh's typical boring restaraunt scene. more

Favorite Place 11/12/2002

My husband and I agree that Rockford is our favorite restaurant in Raleigh. The service and atmosphere are great -- especially for such an inexpensive restaurant. And the food is wonderful -- they always have unique specials on the menu and even change up their sides. I'd much rather eat here than at a stuffy, expensive restaurant! more

good veggie place 9/19/2002

the rockford has a high number of vegetarian options which i found to be surprisingly delightful.... i got the moz sandwich and it was wonderful .... service was a bit slow, but no biggie.. the decor was neat and trendy, but i didnt care for the women's bathroom set up... pretty cool location - upstairs and overlooking glenwood ave... kinda reminded me of an upscale mitch's tavern... Pros: good veggie selection, good location, good price Cons: weird restroom, tad bit slow service more

Yuppies and noise! 9/17/2002

The food is ok but it is noisy and usually crowed with North Raleighites who are trying to be tendy. Pros: food, location, people-watching Cons: price, noise!, parking more

Great atmosphere 8/2/2002

Nice place. I was impressed seeing as I haven't found too many funky, cool, little restaurant/bars in the area. Good food, good drinks, great atmosphere. Their potato salad is awesome! Pros: inexpensive, good atmosphere, cool staff Cons: none! more

Not Bad But Not Great Like Some Say 8/1/2002

It's more of a to-be-seen-here type setting in the end, which is just fine really but does not a stellar bar make. more

love the rockford 7/30/2002

great atmosphere, fast service, gorgeous bar, and awesome food. the potato salad is my FAVORITE! more

If you don't mind Cigarette Smoke... 7/22/2002

...this is a great place. Awesome atmosphere and the food is quite tasty. The ABC (apple, bacon, cheddar) sandwich is to die for... just stay away from the Mac and Cheese. more

always fun 7/18/2002

This place always delivers without pretension or phoniness. Good food and great atmosphere at fair prices. Relax and enjoy yourself at a local bar. Pros: inexpensive, good food more

One of Raleigh's best! 6/26/2002

The Rockford has everything you would want in a restuarant. It has a cool city feel as you clank up the stairs to find the little secret... Enjoy cosmos while catching the view out the windows to Glenwood avenue below. It makes a wonderful place for lunch and dinner... get a bottle of wine and just have the artichoke dip or have dinner - it will surely be a night to remember more
