Great food! Schnitzelllriffic!

I was a patron of this place for many years and yes I am German. The food is great here, the neighborhood is awesome. unfortunately I showed up on a Tuesday night where they had a...

Incredibly rude bouncers 9/23/2007

Having lived in L.A. for over 18 years, I've been to plenty of bars, clubs and so forth. But I have never experienced a more rude bunch of bouncers (or should I say thugs) in my life. And this wasn't even on the Sunset Strip, where you half-way expect attitude. Cons: extremely rude treatment by the bouncers aka thugs more

consistantly the worst customer service from one of the cutest places. 9/4/2007

I live near there and can walk to the red lion for a pint. The atmosphere is nice for someone my age. It is not a college crowd, Even when it is crowded, its nice to share a table and meet some new friends (and i have) but the service there is so bad and the degree of the severity of how bad it is is so bad that, on two occasions, i did not tip and another time the server was soooo outright mean and awful i walked out with out paying.ALL THIS BEING SAID I HAVE WORKED IN RESTAURANTS SINCE I WAS 13 AND AM COMPLETELY COPOSETIC WITH SERVERS BUT THERE IS NO EXCUSE FOR THE POOR SERVICE I HAVE GOTTEN THERE. I would not gothere if it wasn't two blocks from my house and the customers weren't soooooo great. I suppose the next time i go i should talk to a supervisor if i didn't thonk i would get bad treatment from them! Service and manegement aside the peaople who go there are great and I can't say enough about them Pros: the customers are great Cons: THE WORST SERVICE EVER more

Good Beer great times. 4/25/2007

The beer is all imported and is only $6 a pint which is pretty good by LA standards. The beer is also has a little more kick for you buck so if your goal is to get fwasted then you'll be well on your way. The service has always been good for me and our food has always come in a very timely manner. There is no better place for German food in LA as far as I'm concerned. The potato salad is the best I?ve ever had. I would also recommend the bratwurst special on Saturday nights. It?s a great place to relax with some friends and enjoy the atmosphere. The crowd is very diverse. From you local silver lake hipster to a older business people to you occasionally typical college students. You'll see a little bit of everything there. Don't go to late though because you may have to wait outside. There are only so many people allowed into the building at a time. Parking can be rough so expect to walk a little ways. You can try the Bank of America parking lot next door, but be careful because they tow. All in all it?s a great place and I try and go at least once a week. more

Ex-loyal customer 1/24/2007

Used to go there...Drank a lot of beer, paid my tab, and always tipped well. Even got along with Ray, the bouncer. Bartenders shouldn't treat loyal customers like a piece of trash just because someone else is acting like a jerk...Get off your cotton pony. more

Great food, rude service 1/16/2007

Im not too bright in the German food department and so when I was asking questions about what some entrees were or had, the waitress seemed annoyed...yes, i know it can get annoying to answer many questions but when it's someone's first time, you want to make the experience memorable....well the food did that job...and the entertainment upstairs...it wasn't until i had to use the bathroom did I realize there was a bar upstairs...the beer is great for the price....large glasses and high alcohol content, they are not playing with that! The decor upstairs was sooo cool and the ambience was comfort and entertaining...i sure miss the food...i need to go soon.. Pros: great tasting food Cons: rude service more

Excellent German Beer Selection 1/14/2007

This tri-level establishment is unrivaled in its atmosphere and all-around tavern vibe. This place can get crowded but once seated the service is steady. This is the place to go for German beer and German sausages. Pros: beer selection Cons: Can get crowded more

Not for watching the game. 12/13/2006

OK place to find some good German beer. Dissapointed that they removed the TVs from the beer-garden. Pros: Good beer selection Cons: tough parking,no TVs,occasional lousy service more

Ambiance 10/23/2006

I love this tavern. Each time I've gone, I've loved it even more. The bottom floor isn't much. I've not eaten here, but there is food served. Also, sometimes a pianist plays live music. Upstairs is a different bar. The atrium is amazing, with waitresses in Bavarian outfits and one of the largest selections of beers I've ever seen. It's perfect atmosphere for a gathering of friends. Pros: Atmosphere Cons: parking more

Must See Beer Garden 9/18/2006

I first thought this place was a part of the Red Lion HOTEL chain, turns out, I was wrong, and missing out on one of the most authentic, well patroned beer gardens around. The rooftop atrium bar is a spectacular setting to enjoy a HUGE assortment of beers served by costumed-bartenders with an attitude. Avoid Saturday nights, service is slow and the hipsters are swarming. Pros: Authentic, Assortment, Atmosphere Cons: Service more

good german food, slow service 6/8/2006

It is a great place to come and unwind afterwork and eat some german fare. The dinning room downstairs is lined with dark booths, and dimly lit. If you like music, around 10 o'clock on some nights, you can hear a live keyboard musician playing songs people have forgotten. more

Best of the Best 5/5/2006

I have been coming to the Red Lion for years and the place is great. The service is good and continues getting better each time I go. The girls are very nice and friendly and look great in their dirndals. This place is a must if you love beer and good for or if you need a place to hang out with all of your friends, the biergarden is big and smoking is allowed. Pros: beer, food, service Cons: having to go home more

Nice place! 2/16/2006

I stopped here for late lunch and enjoyed a very good meal. I had Knockwurst on Rye bread with German potato salad. Two very friendly servers waited on me, the later was very cute and wore black combat boots!:-)lol Anyways with German cuisine being so hard to get in the Los Angeles area its good to know that the Red Lion Tavern is around. Pros: Food, drinks, Friendly servers Cons: Parking. more

Great Place 10/25/2005

if you wander near SilverLake now and then, you should definitely check this place out. It's cool inside, and they have an outdoor covered patio area, plenty big for your smoking friends with it's own bar... haven't had the food but it always smells/looks good. There are many different rooms/levels to this bar which is cool as well. Get past the couples and old folks dining downstairs, and up stairs is a great party place. Pros: Drinks a plenty, Smoking area, Big Cons: Parking more

Cute Place Rude Service 10/15/2005

The place is cute. Since the new managment took over the place has become slower and more rude. The girls are not hot...the outfits are. I have seen the manager treat his employees bad and in return they treat the customers rude. It all starts at the top. The food is good when you get it...It takes a long time to recieve. Pros: Cute, food okay, could be nice Cons: Rude, takes a long time , should be nice more

One Stein please! 8/23/2005

Great for beer! The feel of thi bar is very warm. The patio is great to hang out in on a lazy summer night. Pros: beer selection, piano more

Chicken Schnitzel!! 5/29/2005

The crowd differs from night to night. Early on weeknights you will see the neighborhood regulars. I prefer the week nights when it's a little quieter. On the weekends the young hipster crowds take over, and it gets very crowded. The Bavarian atmosphere feels quite comfortable. The beer garden is nice, with the option to smoke since it is outside. The Chicken Schnitzel is AMAZING. I don't drink beer, but love German wines. If you've never had Gewurtzstraminer, try it! This is my favorite place to go. It's unique, it's fun, it's good for dinner, great for drinks, and is reasonably priced. The parking in the neighborhood isn't so bad, and it's safe, so you can walk for a ways if need be. more

Berlin is Our Sister City 3/14/2005

Love the beer and the bratwurst and the staff in their traditional outfits. Feels like another world, or at least another country! The beer garden is really cool (smoking is allowed!), but it closes early, i think around 11pm or so. The cheese and sausage platter is good for sharing but heavy. Ltd wine selection. Pros: patio, fun crowd, nice servers Cons: small lot, patio closes early, not much wine more

And the piano guy, too! 5/25/2004

Everything everybody says about this place is true - great vibe, funny and helpful waitresses, quality German food - that spaetzle!, and great German beer (ask for the half and half). But I come on weeknights for the piano guy downstairs. He'll try any song you request, he'll let you sing, the crowd will join in, and he's funny. It's like do-it-yourself karaoke. Name another bar in LA where the crowd will actually join in if you try the Cab Calloway-in-Blues Brothers song. Pros: great vibe, welcoming crowd, good food & drink Cons: , still thinking..., a little pricey?? more

DasMasBoot 1/31/2004

Red Lion attracks all types of folks - that's what makes it a happenin' place. Sing downstairs, get fresh air upstairs, drink and eat everywhere! It's a great place to grab a quick drink between events or to hang out for the night with a group of friends. Friendly service and welcoming atmosphere. As a friend of mine says, ""I've been there only once, but I know it's an awesome place cuz I don't remember what happened after I left!"" Though RL owns a parking lot, there could be use for more. Pros: Food, Drinks, Music Cons: , Parking more

Off the beaten path... 1/18/2004

Good place to go if you don't want to deal w/ the annoying chic people of LA/Hollywood. My first time having bratwurst was here... although a little pricey, it was delectable. They have a good selection of German beers and Jagermeister on tap. We usually get the sausage combination platter and get filled up on it. The vibe is great here and it is definitely comfy. I haven't sat down in the piano lounge which feels kind of depressing. Go to the beergarten... it's a little more 'lively'. Pros: Off the beaten path, German food, German beers Cons: Can be depressing more
