Editorial review from Citysearch 6/6/2013

An authentic German tavern with traditional eats and German brews. The beer garden is a great place to hang out, and the entertainment is fun when they have someone playing the piano downstairs. Red Lion is also the birthplace of the ""Dresden Firebomb"", which consists of a glass of Kostrizer Schwartzbier with a shot of Stroh 160 proof butterscotch rum dropped into it. You'll be hammered in no time! more

THE GRINCH WHO STOLE SCHNITZEL 11/27/2011

The rudest treatment I've ever received from a restaurant in my life. We never even made it in. When I called to get directions and contested them sending me south of Franklin instead of north, I was asked if I had a map and when I said yes the man I was speaking to said, ""Good luck!"" and hung up on me. My family and I were so looking forward to trying them out and enjoying a nice Sunday supper. We'll be dining elsewhere tonight. Can you even believe they hung up on me? I wasn't yelling, I wasn't being rude, I was just disagreeing with their directions and trying to get them to understand that we would be driving east on Franklin and that their directions to turn right on Griffith Park Boulevard would take us south --- AWAY from their restaurant. I wonder if their food is good? We will never know. Nor will any of our friends or relatives. It's amazing how even a stranger's rudeness can ruin your day... more

shock 4/20/2010

I was a patron of this place for many years and yes I am German. The food is great here, the neighborhood is awesome. unfortunately I showed up on a Tuesday night where they had a German version of Austin Powers lounge singer that wears a white wig. I have never felt so insulted in my life. This lounge singer did nothing but make fun of Germans, the accent, & the culture. what an insult. I don't think I can bare to ever go back. No thank you, why would I want to go to a German restaurant where the entertainment makes fun of Germans? Pros: great food & beer selection Cons: horrible music entertainment more

Another Great Patio Location 1/25/2010

There is nothing like drinking great German beer while dining in an amazing patio -- perfect atmosphere for gathering with friends. The service is always great with waitresses in Bavarian outfits. Sometimes a pianist plays live music. And the atrium has one of the largest selections of beers I've ever seen. Pros: Patio, German Beer Cons: Parking more

German Pubby Goodness 10/30/2009

I'm not usually one for brief reviews but... brats, beers, beers IN brats, and waitresses in lederhosen. 'Nuff said. Sit in the patio with a crowd. Sit on the ground floor as a pair -- the piano man is a riot. more

My favorite bar in L.A. 10/12/2009

This place never dissapoints, from the half yard German beers to the open air patio, and authentic German food that really hits the spot. I always like to sit out on the patio with friends and Iv'e never not had a good time at this place! Pros: Best German beer in town! more

I'd go back 10/9/2009

A bit smokey and dark inside, and sometimes it's hard to find a place to sit (or you can just hang out at the patio). I hate that I had to park almost 4 blocks away. But I'd go back for a drink. A good variety of beer, all very good. Hofbrau is probably my favorite. Nice place to enjoy with some friends and drink some yummy beer! Pros: Beer Cons: parking more

been there , done that 8/4/2009

Red Lion used to be cool, in a neighborhood sort of way , even before the patio was there. Now its MTV cast off , look a-likes , ""newbees"" to the neighborhood and hipsters that have taken the cool factor to another level ! wanna be rockstars and loud chics screaming WOOOOO !! after every toast ! Gross ! no thanks, i'll sit home with the bong ! Pros: bratwurst and bread Cons: bratwurst and bread more

Good Service 7/17/2009

Authentic German food was excellent! We sampled the cold cuts meat tray and various beers. Dinner portions were plentiful and a real treat to the palate. Awesome fries. All was superb! Our waitress, Lydia was courteous and always served with a smile. Relaxed atmosphere and friendly staff. We have eaten there many times and will always return when we visit LA. Pros: Service and Food Cons: parking more

Red Lion Rocks 3/9/2009

The RL Tavern is the kind of place that you walk into, get the crappiest servcie you can possibly imagine, and yet still walk out (sometimes stumble out) having the greatest time of your life. The beers are awesome, the Jager is cold and the food is great. I go there for my birthday every year and every year I have the time of my life. It does tend to get crowded during the weekend but what fun would a dead bar be? Pros: The bad service is just awesome! Always cracks me up more

Best German place in LA! 8/13/2008

We've gone through the German (or ""German"", as some proved to be!) restaurants in LA, and this is by far the best. The beer selection sports proper wei?bier, and the menu has some excellent German items - the potato salad was definitely something I'd recommend! We actually had a decent-sized surprise party here, with 17 people, and the management was excellent in organizing the room for us (which is cozy but has real character - perfect for groups under 20!). Our waitress was rude and useless at the beginning, but a quick word to the manager on duty and he fixed that extremely quickly! In fact, he came in off his break and helped her out, so all the guests had dinner in less than 20 minutes! The parking is extremely limited, which can be a problem on busy occasions, but we've always found parking on the street, so don't let this put you off. German food is great - if you're into good German beer and food (which we certainly are) then look no further than this in LA! Pros: Great selection of draft beers, and authentic German beers, food is really good, atmosphere is great, especially the beer garden upstairs! Cons: Not much restaurant parking, but have always found a spot on the road. more

Awesome beer selection 8/1/2008

It is exactly what I was looking for. German restaurants are known for great times. If you like beer, great home cooked food and tons of fun, Red Lion Tavern is a great place to go to. This restaurant has an amazing beer garden all the way in the back. If you are expecting top service, you wont get it here. Knowing German restaurants this is expected. There is nothing warm in a German accent. If someone tells you that there is this German restaurant with excelent service, odds are, it is not a German restaurant......believe me! Pros: Everything Cons: Literally nothing more

Worst Service Ever 11/20/2007

Now I didn't get a chance to eat or even get a drink so I can comment on that but I have never been treated so bad in a place (I call it place because I cant tell if its more bar or more restaurant.) To start be careful, the parking lot is very tiny. If you have the opportunity to park somewhere else I would take it, considering the only people coming out of this place have been drinking since 10am. Cons: everything else more

Good beer and German food 11/4/2007

It's a great place to have a beer and some German food. The Red Lion Tavern does tend to get crowded which can affect how responsive your server will be but this is the kind of place you want to just unwind and let time pass by. Foodwise, the beef rouladen and the red lion ground beef steak are nice dishes that pair well with a glass of Spaten or Hofbrau beer. You can always share a sausage platter and some potato pancakes with some friends if you don't want to have a big dinner. I would recommend getting here before 9:00 pm on a weekend if you want to score a table and even earlier if you want to get a spot in the beer garden. Pros: A full German menu with authentic German beers on tap Cons: Gets crowded on weekends more
