The SceneLocated just north of East Jackson Boulevard in Grant Park, the Petrillo Music Shell was commissioned in 1931 by Mayor A.J. Cermak to lift the spirits of Chicagoans in the wake of the Great Depression. Recent improvements in the sound system mean that there's no need to crowd the stage; concertgoers can spread out comfortably and still hear the music. The DrawFree concerts here regularly draw big-name talent from around the globe (and occasionally big-time crowds--more than 3,800 when packed). The Shell is ground zero for the annual Chicago Jazz Festival, Chicago Blues Festival and the Memorial Day Fireworks celebration.
