AMAZING FOOD AMAZING ATMOSPHERE 11/12/2008

Last night a friend and I had dinner at Peppone. The food and service was just like I remembered it, Perfect! The wait staff is very knowledgeable of the menu and the wine list. The food alone speaks for itself! Their daily specials are incredible. If you want to have a very nice dinner, warm atmosphere and an enjoyable time go here! I don?t know what the person below me was talking about but I have to say this place has always been a superb dining experience. I have a feeling the person below me doesn?t know the difference between Ragu and ketchup! more

WORST PLACE EVER! 3/9/2008

This is the WORST restaurant I've been to in a long time -- and this comes from one of the world's biggest foodies! I am like the walking zagat guide and so, naturally I was excited to try this place. I first ordered the appetizer calamari - it comes SOGGY AND WARM; not crispy and hot. Come on, an italian restaurant that can't even make calamari right. I read about the filet mignon meatballs - TERRIBLE; they were dry and small. Go to Mulberry pizza in BH and you will get WAY better meatballs for a fraction of the price. UGH. The only thing good was the linguine special with king crab legs. Good, but since the whole experience was already ruined, I didn't enjoy. To make matters the WORST, the service was TERRRRRRRIBLE. This guy pretending to be italian didn't bring us the wine list or even acknowledge our presence until AFTER we already ate our appetizer - what the hell is that all about? Then he looked at me like I was crazy when I wanted to a decanter to let the wine breathe - a $150 bottle of wine needs to breathe. He didn't even bring or offer water - I asked him what the problem with the service was and he told me that I had to ASK for water; what the hellllll is that? I have to ASK for water? Is it just me or doesn't a waiter ask what kind of water you want as their first question? Anyway, I hate this place, am SO mad and frustrated, and hope this review helps you NOT go there. Too much hype for nothing but an expensive tab. Thanks for letting me vent. more

OVER-RATED 11/15/2007

My friend and I met at the bar first while waiting for a business associate. We ordered an expensive bottle of wine and asked the bartender (whom I believe to be related to the owner) to switch the tv station to the Laker game which had just started. He said it would have to wait till the 4th quarter as he was watching the Miami-Akron football game on ESPN and he had a bet on it! Turned out he was serious, as he gave the same reply to another gentleman who made the same request minutes later. Pros: wine list, service Cons: parking, the bartender more

PERHAPS THE WORST MEAL I'VE EVER HAD 10/17/2007

This place actually used to be pretty good - many years ago. I've never felt more ripped off than for the dinner I had last night. Even at 1/3 the price (or for that matter, free), the taste and quality of the food was truly horrible. The osso bucco (lamb!??!) was actually served with some sort of BBQ sauce and a side of gnocchi (not fresh) swimming in the swill -- it was truly disgusting. My friend's veal piccata reminded me of something that would have been served at a hospital cafeteria, with side vegetables to match. To add insult to injury, it took about 40 minutes for our meals to arrive, accompanied by the waiter's excuse that the kitchen is too small with only six skillets. Was I on Candid Camera? Pros: I didn't get sick. Cons: I wouldn't go back if they paid me. more

Good Hearty Italian Food 9/19/2007

I'm no celebrity, and I get treated just fine at Peppone. The classics include Linguine Vongole (I prefer the white wine sauce but red sauce is good too), Linguine Pescadora (mixed seafood) and the Farfalle Chicken (bowtie pasta with a brown sauce). Their sausages are so tasty. Their wine list is amazing with a book of choices and reasonable prices (compared to other Italian restaurants). 1998 Opus $189? Pros: fine pastas, good portions and great wine list (better than avg prices too) Cons: parking, pricey more

Don't waste your money-living on a reputation that is poor excuse for what was once a fine establishment 11/22/2006

This USED to be an excellent restaurant. Sadly, it is at best mediocre. I have patronized this place over the past 20 years. The service-terrible-the waiter made the evening aggravating. I ordered lobster-$70 ala carte. They boast you can have it ANY way you would like!. I asked for my dish three very basic ways. Each time, I was told, We don't make it that way. It came down to- you have these 4 choices. THAT IS NOT ANY WAY!!. I asked it to be cooked medium rare. It wasn't. TO make matters worse, it was not live maine lobster-but some frozen variety! Damn pricey! I ordered carpaccio- they don't serve it with any toast, or shaved parmesan. I took a lot of discussion to get them to understand taking out a cheese grater isn't adequate. Pros: good ceasar salad Cons: poor service, argumentative, lazy waiter, frozen seafood, lousy""prime"" meat, overpriced more

Other LA Italian restaurants do it SOOOO much better 8/4/2006

Waited 30 minutes, head waiter cared more about Rob Schneider one table over than giving us a menu. Food was preety basic italian, not inspired. more

Doesn't get better than this 7/20/2006

My favorite place hands-down. If you have visited Northern Italy or ever wanted to experience its authentic food, this is your place. Everything on and off the menu is excellent and I recommend that you ask one of the waiters for his favorite dish since most have worked there for around 30 years. more

User review by ginnylovesfood 10/26/2005

The food was pretty good, but way overpriced for what it is. There are better restaurants with a better atmosphere, food, and value. The service was very attentive, but almost to the point of being annoyed. It's like they are constantly watching you. I don't regret going, but we won't be going back. more

What happened? 1/10/2005

My husband and I went here for dinner and we were completely taken back by the rude hostess and the mediocre yet pricey food. We felt VERY rushed as if they needed our table for someone else. We were disgusted when our server left a cart of other patron's dirty dishes practically right on top of our table. I've heard a lot of good things about this place and thought we'd give it a try but I'm sorry to say that the service, the food and the expected politeness do NOT stand up to the rave reviews. Hopefully, it was just an off night but I won't be going back to find out. Pros: wine list Cons: , value more

Did I go on an off day? 12/14/2004

This restaurant seems to have gotten very good reviews, but when I went, the food was about the equivalent of Denny's. I ordered a very simple spaghetti, and my friend a fettucini dish of some sort. The noodles were overcooked and soggy, and the sauce tasted like it was straight out of a jar of Ragu. My friend thought his food was merely mediocre. The wine was also mediocre. The atmosphere was stale and boring (not even snobby stuffy - more like a senior center). The service was very nice, but I dine out for both food and service, and I would never go back to this place again. Pros: Good Service Cons: , Stale atmosphere more

Real Italian Italian food 3/1/2004

Peppone's is the real deal. The food is the same if not better than the top restaurants in Italy and NYC. The pasta is top notch especially the handmade gnocchi that mealt in your mouth The fish is fresh and fabulous, especailly if you get it ""Sicily style"" with red sauce. The calamari steak is out of this world as are the filet migion meatballs as well as every veal dish on the menu. No other Italain joint in LA can come close to Peppone's food. The patrons are mostly regulars but the staff, especailly Tracey, make everyone feel welcome. Everything about this place is very real from the food, to the servers(who actaully seem like they are having a good time) to the patrons who eat and hang out for hours in these great maroon booths. Pros: excellent food, authentic atmosphere, home made gnocchi more

Mamma Mia, this food is delicioso! 8/11/2003

From the incredibly extensive wine list to the vigilant service staff to the scampi that had my taste buds doing a happy dance, Peppone's is hands down one of the best restaurants in Los Angeles. The food here is unsurpassed anywhere - not even in Italy could I find such attention to detail - garden fresh spices, vine ripened tomatoes, the perfect amounts of wine and the freshest imported cheeses. I don't work there, I'm just a fan. You'll LOVE it!! Pros: Food, Wine Cons: It's in Brentwood, Often hard to get in more

One of my favorites in the US 12/4/2002

Terrific traditional Italian food, great staff, class (mostly) regular customers, and my favorite Italian restaurant in SoCal. Have Rudy at the bar make you something special while you wait or have his ""funny coffee"" with dessert. The staff has been known to ""customize"" dishes from the menu for polite, respectful customers. If there is a better wine selection anywhere in LA, let me know. Due to the ""weight"" of the food and the ambience, customers hang around for quite a while. Go very early or make a reservation. Even the Madonnas of the world wait on line to get a booth at Peppone. I have been known to fly to LA just to eat there. Pros: Excellent food, Ambience, Staff Cons: PARKING, Expensivebut worth it, Always crowded more

Only the Serious Get the Best!!! 7/10/2002

There is no Better Italian food outside of Italy. There is no question that the chef and staff know exactly what their customers want, and they're not afriad to make you wait for it. However, if you have a cult like addiction to italian food (and god knows I do!), there's no restaurant better than Peppone. The size of the portions, quality of the ingredients, friendly and attanetvive staff, and stiff cocktails are just some of the positives. But to truly appreciate the magnificence of this resuarnate you must try it yourself. Make sure you make a reservation a few days in adavance, and be prepared to wait a little while before sitting down. Everyone who eats at Peppone attempts to make there meals drag out (up to 4 hours in some occasions), but once you try the food you will see why no one wants to leave! Pros: Best Food Ever!!!, Huge Portions!!!, Great Wine LIst!!! Cons: Be Prepared To Wait more
